Strange Adventures Among the Post-DeadBy: Charles Shulman and Carl James AndersonLife after death is not what you think. It's not what Tom thought it would be, either. As a ghost, Tom soon realizes the post-dead world is far less organized than religion and literature would have us think.Witty and gripping, this is a story about life after death and a climactic clash between gods who have different outlooks on the multiverse. In today's polarized society, the book takes a much broader view of what is acceptable behavior, encouraging tolerance where it might have been lacking before.About The AuthorsCharles Shulman worked for the City of Los Angeles before working in industry as a customer service rep. After several other jobs in industry, Charles ended up as a solder-guru for a military contractor. He is the reason the Communists surrendered as he had been trying to get into defense for over ten years, only to find that shortly there would be no market for his talents (which explains why he thinks the gods have a sense of humor). So, Charles substitute taught until retirement. In his free time, Charles fought medieval style for decades. His other hobbies are history, reading, and gaming-especially RPGs, board gaming, and miniature wargaming. After two long marriages, Charles is now a widower.Carl James Anderson is a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a B.A. in English. Looking for the book that will motivate you to get up off the couch, get moving and keep moving? This is that book. Hippocrates famously said: "Walking is man's best medicine," while Nietzsche rightly observed that "all truly great thoughts are conceived while walking." Decades of research have taught us that these two brilliant thinkers were right: those who walk regularly live longer, healthier, and happier lives. A regular walking practice can boost your mood, build your bones, power your weight loss, improve your memory, combat depression, fire up your creativity, lower stress, and literally add years to your life. Why Walk? unlocks that research and shares intimate stories from dozens of people who have transformed their lives and communities by putting one foot in front of the other.

This novel tells the story of Gabe whose special love is music, particularly jazz and who is living in a small town in Kansas with his Mother. She has never recovered, also Gabe, from being abandoned by his Father when he was very young. Gabe is writing a jazz musical created around the music of the American superstar Judy Garland and the talents of the English composer Noel Coward and this is what helps to keep him from becoming too emotionally drained. His Mother then unexpectedly dies and Gabe discovers part of a letter left by his Father and so feels compelled to travel to Chicago to search for him. Gabe has no knowledge or even a memory of him and only has the name of a bar called The Two Rivers where he might be located, but he is desperate to find out why he left them. He also has to leave his girlfriend Maisie who loves him passionately but Gabe feels unable to commit to her. Gabe doesn't know until much later when it is shockingly revealed that his fate is tied up with a young Mexican whose Father also abandoned him but for very different reasons, causing him to become crazy with his own grief. Gabe feels totally lost and doesn't know what he can do to turn his life around and he falls too quickly in love with 'the dancer' a woman he meets in a Chicago park. A series of conflicting events take Gabe into an emotional labyrinth before the story of his Father's past life is revealed. He is then presented with even greater challenges until he finally and painfully learns what had happened to him and his Mother all those many years ago. The revelations are totally overwhelming and affect everyone else with whom he is involved in this tumultuous journey to discover the truth. Gabe's story is painfully revelatory but ultimately uplifting and totally inspirational.

'The definitive look at dance music and club culture - a must read' - Paul Oakenfold'Brilliantly woven collection of aural histories ... a damn fine read' - DJ MAGIn 1987, four friends from London, Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling, Nicky Holloway and Johnny Walker, took a week-long holiday to Ibiza. What they saw there, and brought back home, would give rise to a new global music and counterculture movement. As the eighties drew to their close, with Thatcherism holding the nation tight in its grip, something funny was happening right across the jungle of Britain's nightlife scene. People were dressing down, not up, to go to clubs. And they were dancing right through the night armed seemingly with only bottles of water. Ecstasy and acid house music had arrived on British shores, and a tribal battle between for the moral future of the nation, between the youth and the establishment, had begun. In The Second Summer of Love, author and dance music promoter Alon Shulman uses exclusive contributions from the world's biggest DJs, including Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim, Moby, Faithless, Mr C, Farley & Heller, Danny Rampling and many others to faithfully recreate the story of the summers of 1988 and 1989, and chart the birth and rise of Acid House, dance music and club culture right through to the modern day where dance music has become a culturally dominant global industry.Complete with stunning unseen photographs, this is the first authentic account of what really happened in that glorious period - from the politics and the people to the music, the drugs, the fashion and the culture - told by people who were there, as they bring to life the creation of an underground scene which inadvertently altered the course of modern global youth culture forever.'It's as if house music and rave culture tapped into this ancient predilection of humans to stay up all night dancing and staring into the fire, and just supercharged it with electricity and MDMA' - Moby'What I was experiencing was right in front of my eyes, it was happening right now and I loved it' -Carl Cox'It opened my eyes and ears to a different spirit in music' - Fatboy Slim

In Giant Steps, Derek Shulman chronicles a truly incredible life and career in music first as the leader of the progressive-rock pioneers Gentle Giant, then as the record-label executive responsible for cultivating and signing the likes of Bon Jovi, Dream Theater, and Slipknot and orchestrating comebacks by AC/DC, Yes, and more. Beginning with a young Shulman confidently telling his school teacher that he would grow up to become a pop star, this eye-opening memoir explores a Zelig-like existence on both sides of the music industry. Shulman found fame first as a teenager in the 60s group Simon Dupree & The Big Sound, then took rock music to the outer reaches across eleven albums with Gentle Giant. In the 80s, he switched gears to become a record executive, first at Polygram and then at Atco and Roadrunner, working with everyone from Black Sabbath to Dr. Dre to Pantera to Men Without Hats. Along the way, Gentle Giant would become a defining influence on hip-hop, their music sampled by many of the genre s leading lights including J. Dilla, De La Soul, and dozens more and the band acclaimed by The Roots bandleader and filmmaker Questlove as his favourite rock act of all time. Clean-living and career-driven in a world of debauchery and excess, Shulman is perfectly placed to explore and explain the major developments in popular music and youth culture from the 1960s to the present day, making Giant Steps a must-read for fans of prog, rock, hip-hop, and more.

This book examines infant and early childhood mental health and the importance of early emotional and social development for later developmental trajectories. It incorporates research and clinical perspectives and brings research findings to bear in evaluating intervention strategies. By incorporating empirical developmental literature that is directly relevant to infant mental health and clinical practice, the book addresses the multiple forces which shape young children’s mental health. These forces include child factors, parental and familial variables, childrearing practices, and environmental influences. In addition, the book explores parent-child relationships, family networks, and social supports as protective factors, as well as risk factors such as poverty, exposure to violence, and substance abuse, which influence and change developmental processes. It shows that, by examining socio-emotional development in a cultural context, human development in the twenty-first century canbe conceptualized through differences, similarities and diversity perspectives, focusing on the rights of every individual child.

This captivating glimpse of real-life mid- century fashion features vintage color photographs taken by amateurs from the past seventy years. In 2017 filmmaker Lee Shulman bought a random box of Kodachrome slides and was so taken by the people and stories he discovered that he decided to create an ongoing archive, which he has called The Anonymous Project. Dressed to Impress, the most recent book to have come out of that endeavour, aims to preserve the collective memory of the way we lived in an increasingly distant past. It features more than two hundred vibrant, candid color slides, presented in stunning full-page spreads, that reflect how people dressed in all kinds of settings— at home and on vacation, playing and working, partying and hanging out. The images have, for the most part, never been printed or published and their raw, unpolished quality makes them all the more fascinating and arresting. In turns funny, startling, and touching, this collection provides a unique and intimate glimpse into the fashion and everyday experiences of real people during a transformative period in our common history.
