Rainmakers, Closers, and Other Sales Myths

Rainmakers, Closers, and Other Sales Myths

Arnold Tilden; Steven B. Wiley

University Press of America
2006
nidottu
No other field is as simultaneously important and misunderstood as sales. Managers and salespeople search for success in sales myths that do not improve sales performance. Rainmaker, Closers & Other Sales Myths provides a clear-cut path to successful selling by debunking mythology and replacing the myths with a proven sales system of strategy, structure and people. Like war, a winning sales strategy is coordinated and waged at four levels: shareholders (sovereigns); CEOs and presidents (generals); sales management (officers); and salespeople (soldiers). Strategy defines the system and solution, yet without a sound structure managed by the right people all strategies will fall short. This book provides the tools sales leaders need to set a strategy for success, construct structure that supports it, and build a winning sales team that possess the natural abilities to learn the skills to succeed.

For the first time, a top leadership scholar and a top leadership practitioner explore the true duties, demands, and privileges of leadership. Intellectual sparks flew when Warren Bennis, the “father” of modern leadership studies and Steven B. Sample, one of the most accomplished university presidents in recent history, came together for candid explorations of the forces that shape successful leaders and unsuccessful ones. The Art and Adventure of Leadership, their final collaboration, reveals the profound insights that the authors gained together over the 16 years in which they co-taught one of the most popular leadership courses in America. Here, each brings his own distinct vantage point as they address the mechanics and mysteries of leadership. The result is a unique examination of the journey of great leaders from momentary setbacks to ultimate success. It offers profound lessons on what determines the difference between failure and redemption for leaders. And it illuminates important and overlooked dimensions of great leaders ranging from Winston Churchill to Steve Jobs. Together, they explore why: A mature leader must grasp when it’s healthy to risk failure, and when failure can’t be tolerated at any costLeadership isn’t for everyone and requires a particular set of skills and competencies that are often glossed over in most management literatureTo succeed in an uncertain and fast-changing world, a shrewd leader must understand which aspects of human society change—and which aspects never changeA mature, wise leader must seek a balance between high-minded ideals and the gritty realities and compromises that leaders face in their daily livesAbove all, meaningful leadership remains a matter of character With incredible insight, this book examines why George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and other giants were able to recover from failures, learn resilience, and prepare themselves for their moments of destiny. In so doing, it demonstrates and helps cultivate the leadership skills that you need to create your own most meaningful legacy. The Art and Adventure of Leadership is a unique look at leadership, and a critical resource for the leaders of tomorrow.

Costs of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses

Costs of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses

The University of Michigan Press

As the debate over health care reform continues, costs have become a critical measure in the many plans and proposals to come before us. Knowing costs is important because it allows comparisons across such disparate health conditions as AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, and cancer. This book presents the results of a major study estimating the large and largely overlooked costs of occupational injury and illness--costs as large as those for cancer and over four times the costs of AIDS.The incidence and mortality of occupational injury and illness were assessed by reviewing data from national surveys and applied an attributable-risk-proportion method. Costs were assessed using the human capital method that decomposes costs into direct categories such as medical costs and insurance administration expenses, as well as indirect categories such as lost earnings and lost fringe benefits. The total is estimated to be $155 billion and is likely to be low as it does not include costs associated with pain and suffering or of home care provided by family members.Invaluable as an aid in the analysis of policy issues, Costs of Occupational Injuryand Illness will serve as a resource and reference for economists, policy analysts, public health researchers, insurance administrators, labor unions and labor lawyers, benefits managers, and environmental scientists, among others.J. Paul Leigh is Professor in the School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, University of California, Davis. Stephen Markowitz, M.D., is Professor in the Department of Community Health and Social Medicine, City University of New York Medical School. Marianne Fahs is Director of the Health Policy Research Center, Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy, New School University. Philip Landrigan, M.D., is Wise Professor and Chair of the Department of Community Medicine, Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York.

Data has historically been the output of computer systems. With the onslaught of smartphones, and changes in behaviors such as "Tweeting", the volume, complexity and velocity of data is changing at an exponential pace. And with newer, small technologies being embedded into just about every physical manifestation, data is on its way to be generated from just about every person and every thing. Everything will be "talking" to the web: clothes, roads, signs, packages, chairs, table, cars, phones, etc. The Data Tsunami is on its way. This book provides the first Survival Guide of how an enterprise can implement the appropriate changes, methodologies and technologies to best govern and manage their current data and prepare for the Data Tsunami. This includes what most people think of as data governance and data management. The data that must be governed and managed include master data, meta data, referential data, transactional data and unstructured data such as social data, images, videos, spreadsheets and documents.
Paradox and Imperatives in Health Care

Paradox and Imperatives in Health Care

The Paradox: Americans are not as healthy as people in dozens of comparable countries that spend 30 percent less on health care, and our medical marketplace overall is plagued by persistent problems of cost, quality, and access. Yet, the world’s best individual health systems are located in the U.S.—each a unique result of visionary leadership and private initiative, not government-driven health reform. The Imperatives: Due to powerful new forces explained in this book, medical spending has stopped growing. Purchasers, payers, and patients are no longer willing or able to keep paying more. To stay in business and improve population health, providers and their business partners must eliminate the shameful waste generated by inefficient and ineffective production processes. The Solution: Simply repairing or repealing the Affordable Care Act will not get us where we want to go. The fundamental roadblock is a wasteful system, not uninsured Americans. Reform needs to be immediately redirected to creating the best health care system that 17 percent of GDP can buy. Money saved by taking the new path to reform can then be used to improve population health through access for all. Paradox and Imperatives in Health Care is the roadmap for getting there. Supplies updated perspectives on health care’s problems and solutionsDetails the reasons why government-driven reform does not solve problemsProvides a justification for regulatory relief tied to performance improvementSuggests specific new policies for a better approach to desired outcomesPresents content written expressly for busy executives and policy makers
