Steven Leiber was a pioneering San Francisco art dealer, collector and gallerist who specialized in the dematerialized art practices of the 1960s and 1970s and the ephemera and documentation spawned by conceptual art and other postwar movements. To sell this material, Leiber produced a series of 52 iconic catalogues between 1992 and 2010. Far from your ordinary dealer catalog, Leiber's catalogs paid homage to the kind of historic printed matter that he bought and sold, mimicking iconic publications like Wallace Berman's Semina journal and the exhibition catalog for Documenta V (1972). Leiber's reputation spread via these unique volumes, which included works by John Baldessari, Lynda Benglis, Ray Johnson, Lucy Lippard, Allan Kaprow, Yayoi Kusama, Claes Oldenburg, Ed Ruscha, Lawrence Weiner and many more. Across 252 pages, this book documents the full set of 52 dealer catalogs produced by Steven Leiber between 1992 and 2010. Inspired by Leiber's often humorous borrowing for his catalog designs, the book's format references Sol Lewitt's Autobiography and includes an essay and contextual notes by SFMOMA Head Librarian David Senior. Additional contributors include Ann Butler, Christophe Cherix, Marc Fischer, Tom Patchett, David Platzker, Marcia Reed, Lawrence Rinder and Robin Wright. Steven Leiber (1957 2012) began to buy and sell ephemera while working as a private dealer selling prints, drawings and multiples in the early 1980s. Scrupulously organized and cataloged, Leiber's collection housed in his grandmother's basement became an important resource for scholars, curators and other enthusiasts. The collection included the work of some 1,000 artists and represented basically every major movement within late 20th-century avant-garde practice, including Fluxus, conceptual art, land art, mail art, performance and video.

The work of photographer and Rhode Island School of Design professor Steven B. Smith (born 1963) chronicles the transition of the Western landscape into suburbia. Robert Pinsky, US Poet Laureate, wrote of his work, "Smith's images record not so much a contrast as two violent absences joining as a single force. Landfill, seedling, turnabout, heating coil collude with the sky and mountains in a triumph of disproportion: scale not so much confused or lost as irrelevant." Steven B. Smith: Your Mountain is Waiting documents the accelerating suburbanization of Smith's native Utah. Peeling back the layers of westward expansion with equal parts subtlety and irony, Smith captures the new McMansions springing up against the rocky, rust-red mountains and deep blue skies of the West. Smith is equally attentive to the cast of characters that fill these new landscapes the people that build them, and the people that live in them.

Steven Seagal and Bruce Lee: Martial Arts, from the Fake to the Fantastic: An Africentric Analysis

To refer to Steven Seagal as a "fake" is not an insult once you realize two things: (1) negative publicity is still publicity and he feeds on his "bad boy by any means necessary" persona and (2) the definition of the word "fake." When something is fake it is "not genuine or counterfeit." When you read about how Seagal got to where he got to and the lies he told to make it appear as if he was some kind of "guru," then you realize that the word "fake" fits him like a glove. You can tell when a man is great by this: say his name and everybody recognizes it, smiles and has good memories of him. Bruce Lee, born Lee Jun-fan was considered by many to be one of the most influential martial artists of all time. The fact that he died at age 33 speaks even more to his long-time commitment and work ethic as he is known as the founder of the martial art Jeet Kune Do. These are the types of facts and foundations that justify labeling a man like this as being "fantastic." This book focuses on Bruce Lee and his role in the movie "Enter the Dragon," which may well be the best martial arts movie of all time. In that analysis I concentrate on the racial relationships that the film attempted to portray by adding a white novice, John Saxon and a black martial arts expert, Jim Kelly. It is the view of this writer that the multi-racial experiment was a failure. The saving grace of the movie was the presence and on-going spectacular fight scenes that featured the one-and-only Bruce Lee. Seagal, as this book clearly shows, burst onto the scene with an incredible skill set, mainly consisting of Aikido. This book offers that after his first four mega-hits - "Above the Law," "Hard to Kill," "Marked for Death" and "Out for Justice," Seagal's career petered off even as his waistline increased and his obvious consumption of mayonnaise sandwiches probably reached world record proportions. This book also makes it clear that one man (Lee) was an original, a leader and an iconoclast. The other man (Seagal) is a chameleon, attempting to sound and act Italian at one point, and once he was introduced to black rappers, began to try to sound and even walk "like a black man" (his words). Clad in black gear including oversized black leather coats that he wears even in tropical weather, Seagal has found it easier to cover and hide his girth rather than to work it off. Bruce Lee, on the other hand, viewed the body as a temple and probably had less than 2% body fat. Bruce Lee and Steven Seagal, both martial artists but in almost every other respect, as different as night and day. Seagal has had and has exploited the benefit of "white privilege" and in the process, did what he had to do to get what he wants. Bruce worked hard and struggled and used his skill set to bring attention to Chinese culture in general and the martial art of Kung Fu, in particular. Many say that the comparison is akin to comparing apples and oranges. Perhaps this would be a better argument had not Bruce Lee been the best - ever. And because of that lofty achieved status, the "ascribed" status of Steven Seagal is often mistakenly compared and contrasted with that of the hard-working Lee. Seagal's race, contacts, network and "I'll-do-anything-to-be-a-star" approach to life is the key to his meteoric rise to movie stardom. All Bruce had was his skill set, belief system, cultural commitment and love for people. In America Seagal's way is the typical winner and people like Bruce usually end up finishing last. Most of Seagal's movies are also reviewed and analyzed. Enjoy the book.

This book reveals how Spielberg utilises stylistic strategies that are both unique and innovative when considered within the context of the classical Hollywood system. James Mairata identifies two distinct systems at work in Spielberg's application of style. One is the use of deep space compositions and staging, a form that was commonly seen in Hollywood cinema until the rise of the 'New Hollywood' in the early 1970s. The other system is based on the ubiquitous shot, reverse shot arrangement most commonly used for dialogue scenes, and which Spielberg has modified into what the author describes as wide reverses. Through the integration of both systems, Spielberg is able to create a more complete visual sense of scenographic space and a more comprehensive world of the narrative, while still remaining within the conventional boundaries of classical style. The wide reverse system also permits him to present a more highly developed version of Hollywood's conventional practice of rendering style as transparent or unnoticed. This volume shows that this, together with the wide reverse further enables Spielberg to create a narrative that offers the spectator both a more immersive and more affective experience.
Judaism and Modern Western Philosophy: Collected Writings of Steven S. Schwarzschild

What are the implications of Franz Rosenzweig's quasi-racialist commonalities with Heidegger's thought? Was Kant a 'Jewish thinker'? Does Spinoza's philosophy lend support to totalitarianism? Was Marx's philosophy more shaped by Jewish cultural tradition than is typically assumed? Was there a strong challenge to Strauss's reading of Maimonides already in the 1940s? This volume contains a collection of Steven S. Schwarzschild's (1924-1989) most important unpublished works, the majority of which were found in his literary remains. The essays present provocative perspectives on influential philosophical figures such as Maimonides, Spinoza, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Rosenzweig, Heidegger, and Leo Strauss. As one of the most original twentieth-century thinkers in the field of Jewish philosophy, Schwarzschild's analysis provides readers with new ways of understanding modern Western philosophy, Jewish religious tradition, and the relation between them.
