Education for Democracy

Education for Democracy

Steven P. Camicia

Information Age Publishing

sidottu
This book presents a vision of education for democracy built around promoting equity and social justice. In doing so, Camicia and Knowles challenge many of the common perspectives of democratic education, deliberation, and the common good. The authors have published widely on the topic of education for democracy. This book builds upon their work to assist practicing teachers, teacher educators, graduate students, and educational researchers in understanding the background of education for democracy, as well as new directions for the field. While one of the primary goals of public schools is to teach students how to build better communities, this goal is increasingly difficult given the degree of political polarization within societies. Recent events provide no shortage of challenges to democracy in the United States and beyond. Utilizing theory and research, Camicia and Knowles promote instructional methods that are responsive to changing cultural and political contexts. There is an increasing need to rethink democratic principles and how these principles might be supported in classrooms in order to teach for social justice. This requires a move away from often stated idealistic notions of deliberative democracy, toward a perspective of education for democracy that incorporates aspects of identity, interests, and inequitable power relations within society.

The year is 2152. Lt. Col J.T. Coulter, had been given a Quest by the Council of Elders. After WW Three and WW Four, on top of years of unrestrained pollution, Earth was down to its last five to thirteen years before life would no longer be possible. Phase one of the Quest involved building a spacecraft that could carry colonists to a new planet, found in the Tau Centauri system, called Terra Prime and its twin Terra Prime 2. The 1500 colonists were chosen and ready for hibernation and Coulter, along with his senior command staff, have tried to prepare the crew to handle everything they can think of... unfortunately there are going to be things they had not dreamed of but it was time for Phase Two, the launch of the UDASS Seeker headed for Terra Prime... come along for the ride...

New Poems, this author's third and most recent work, starts by taking you along on a month full of the daily activities, adventures, difficulties, and observations arising directly from hard country living ("December"), one poem for each day, just for openers. "Ravens," the next series of sixteen poems, takes you deeply into a metaphysical world of fascinating mythical and religious associations and meanings of ravens in cultural history and scripture around the world. This is followed by "The Planets," a beautiful little collection of seven poems, with each planet addressed individually and sensitively through its classical themes. That much would normally more than fill other contemporary books of poetry, but this author has much more here. Although the author was thirteen years old when Theodore Roethke passed away, "In Respect of Theodore Roethke" presents nine poems which, on their own, probe some of the dark and difficult places of existence where Roethke struggled. Finally, "Various" gives us ten poems that are not aligned topically and that give us the poet's informality and humor. Throughout all the reader will encounter here, they will find a mastery of sound and structure, strength and grace, sending, ultimately, a plea of love into the world.

John Wesley, eighteenth century Church of England priest and founder of Methodism, was strongly influenced by the works of Roman Catholic mystics early in his ministry. These writings shaped his widely known doctrine of Christian perfection or entire sanctification. The mystics inspired Wesley to advocate for a lofty spiritual goal that he believed to be attainable in this life. In time, however, he developed many contentions with extremes as well as some particulars found in the mystical tradition. Beginning in 1749, Wesley began to publish his Christian Library--a fifty-volume compilation of abridged works that he believed to be among the best writings on practical divinity that had been published in English. Among this vast collection, he incorporated two works originally written in Spanish including a sampling of Letters by Juan de Avila and the Spiritual Guide by Miguel de Molinos. This book examines Wesley's editing of these works as a way of evaluating Wesley's theology in comparison and contrast with Spanish mysticism. In particular, this book serves as a comparative study among these authors on matters of theological authority, self-knowledge and epistemology, soteriology, spiritual growth, suffering and divine withdrawal, prayer, meditation, contemplation, and the spiritual goal.

There is a story going around about the public schools and the people who teach in them—a story about how awful our nation’s teachers are and why we should blame teachers for the poor state of our public schools. But is the story about teachers right or fair? Why do so many people point fingers at teachers and seem to resent them so much?Blame Teachers: The Emotional Reasons for Educational Reform examines why many people blame teachers for what they understand to be the poor state of our schools. Blame comes easily to many people when they read about poor student performance and how “protected” teachers are by teachers’ unions and tenure policies. And with blame comes resentment, and with resentment comes demands for all kinds of educational reform—calls for more standardized testing, merit pay, charter schools, and all the rest. And we expect teachers to like and accept all the reforms being proposed.Conceiving educational reform out of blame and resentment aimed at teachers does no good for teachers, students, or schools. Blame Teachers outlines many of the strange and unacceptable assumptions about teaching and the purposes of education contained in these educational reforms. Intended for teachers, teacher education students, policymakers and the larger public, Blame Teachers suggests much better and more productive conversations we can have with teachers—conversations much more likely to improve teaching and learning in classrooms. The book argues for conversations with teachers that don’t begin or end with blame and resentment.

The Role of Diet is not one of your typical diet books. In fact, it's not a diet book at all. It is the culmination of more than 3 years of research about everything from Vitamins and Minerals to the nutritional values of individual foods in every food group. There is a massive amount of information in books and on the internet relating to diet and food. Many of them claim to provide the best diet tips and strategies for eating healthy. Most don't provide essential information about diet and health, they simply tell you how it's going to miraculously save your life when you buy into their program. Diet and the foods you eat are critical to your well being. They should not be painful or rigorous to adhere to. If they are, the honeymoon is over as soon as you deviate from the program.None of these programs provide you with the key information that you really need. You get an impossible to follow protocol with a disclaimer which pretty much states that if it doesn't work, it's entirely your fault. By the time you realize it's not working and never will, they have another load of crock to shove in your face claiming that this is the one that will change your life....for about 3 months in reality. The Role of Diet doesn't work that way. It is a thoroughly fact checked manuscript that provides you with the dietary information that you really need. It is fully intended to be a reference manual that educates you on all aspects of nutrition and the specific biology associated with it in a format that you can understand. Part 2 digs deeper into the biology of many natural foods and their properties. There are no specific recommendations, no protocols, and no programs to join. It's just the facts. You're the one making the informed decisions, The Role of Diet simply provides you with the tools and information to make educated decisions about your diet and your health.

First diagnosed with schizophrenia following his freshman year at Harvard, Steve Lansky learned over the years to manage his mental illness with the help of medication. By middle age, he had forged a life as a poet and teacher. But like so many similarly afflicted, he felt heavy and hamstrung by the drug that had helped keep him sane. When a new drug came on the market, Lansky switched to it, hoping to regain the energy and lightness of his youth. It worked. He was able to pursue a romance with a young aspiring actress. He started riding his bike again-a lifelong passion. But his renewed energy also led him in directions less healthy and tethered to reality. As The Break begins, Steve is embarking, despite admonitions from academic colleagues, on an ill-considered and quixotic train trip from his Cincinnati hometown to The New Yorker Festival, where he believes he will be able to persuade someone at the magazine to publish one of his poems. In a voice that is at times comic, at other times harrowing, Lansky describes his increasing disorientation, which culminates, after he gets on the wrong train home, with a late-night arrest in a trainyard and a stint in a New Jersey state mental hospital. Following his release, he embarks on another poorly conceived journey, this time an unwelcome visit to his brother in Vermont with whom he shares a plan to see author Margaret Atwood so she and Steve can discuss her novel Alias Grace. With a hero who is part Bukowski, part Neal Cassady, part Humbert Humbert, The Break shows how tenuous sanity is, and how easy it is for inspiration to give way to madness.

Dictatorship by Degrees

Dictatorship by Degrees

Steven P. Feldman

Lexington Books

Dictatorship by Degrees: Xi Jinping in China traces the totalitarian elements that linger in China’s governing policies and practices, such as extra-legal Anti-Corruption Campaign, great concentration of power in one man, increasing intolerance, increasing propaganda, increasing indoctrination, increasing self-criticism inside the Party, expansion of Party cells across society, increasing censorship, cult of personality, and mass incarceration in Xinjiang. Steven P. Feldman develops a concept of pre-totalitarianism to explore these developments through extensive field data, including interviews with business executives, professors, lawyers, and non-profit executives, and observations of daily life. Feldman argues that Chinese political culture, based on the core principle of small group loyalties is inherently unstable, resulting in an ongoing tendency for leaders to concentrate power to survive and accomplish their goals. Under communist dictatorial political organization, totalitarian domination is always a temptation and risk.
