The Tanner Lectures on Human Values, founded July 1, 1978 at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, were established by the American scholar, industrialist, and philanthropist Obert Clark Tanner. Lectureships are awarded to outstanding scholars or leaders in broadly defined fields of human values and transcend ethnic, national, religious, or ideological distinctions.
Set in the 1860s, Molly Tanner's Violin is the epic story of US Marshal Colt Patterson. The hero of Dennis Okeefe's award-winning novel, Dixon's Edge, and a sequel to his novel, Two Hearts, in which he joins with Kathleen Oberholt, the heroine of Two Hearts, to fulfill a vision of a Navajo mystic in which the Navajo tribe is released from the hellhole of the prison camp, Bosque Redondo, and allowed to return to their beloved land of Canyon De Chelley in Arizona. As they fulfill the vision, they cross paths with the horrific but compelling poisoner, Elroy Peoples, and equally evil US Army Colonel Pickering, which climaxes in a cataclysmic confrontation in the high desert of New Mexico. This novel is filled with page-to-page action, romance, and compassion. Though fiction, it is based on events that really occurred, and it is definitely a worthwhile read for those who enjoy historical fiction.
SOTIIN suhtautuminen on ollut kaksijakoista. Yhtäältä sota-aika on nähty kaikin puolin surullisena.

Mathews's standard biography of Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937), based on extensive research in archives in this country and family records in France, where Tanner emigrated before the turn of the century to find freedom and acceptance, provides a full account of Tanner's life and art.
Over the last forty years, renewed interest in the career of Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859–1937) has vaulted him into expanding scholarly discourse on American art. Consequently, he has emerged as the most studied and recognized representative of African American art during the nineteenth century. In fact, Tanner, in the spirit of political correctness and racial inclusiveness, has gained a prominent place in recent textbooks on mainstream American art and his painting, The Banjo Lesson (1893), has become an iconic symbol of black creativity. In addition, Tanner achieved national recognition when the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1991 and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2012 celebrated him with major retrospectives. The latter exhibition brought in a record number of viewers. While Tanner lived a relatively simple life where his faith and family dictated many of the choices he made daily, his emergence as a prominent black artist in the late nineteenth century often thrust him openly into coping with the social complexities inherent with America’s great racial divide. In order to fully appreciate how he negotiated prevailing prejudices to find success, this book places him in the context of a uniquely talented black man experiencing the demands and rewards of nineteenth-century high art and culture. By careful examination on multiple levels previously not detailed, this book adds greatly to existing Tanner scholarship and provides readers with a more complete, richly deserved portrait of this preeminent American master.

This beautiful book, companion publication to the exhibition of the same name, presents a complex overview of the life and career of the pioneering African American artist Henry O. Tanner (1859-1937). Recognized as the patriarch of African American artists, Tanner forged a path to international success, powerfully influencing younger black artists who came after him. Following a preface by David Driskell, the essays in this book - written by international scholars including Alan Braddock, Michael Leja, Jean-Claude Lesage, Richard Powell, Marc Simpson, Tyler Stovall, and Helene Valance - explore many facets of Tanner's life, including his upbringing in post-Civil War Philadelphia, his background as the son of a bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal church, and his role as the first major academically trained African American artist. Additional essays discuss Tanner's expatriate life in France, his depictions of the Holy Land and North Africa, and the scientific and technical innovations reflected in his oeuvre. Edited and introduced by Anna O. Marley, this volume expands our understanding of Tanner's place in art history, showing that his status as a painter was deeply influenced by his race but not decided by it. Contributors include: Brian Baade; Alan Braddock; Marcus Bruce; Adrienne L. Childs; Robert Cozzolino; David Driskell; Amber Kerr-Allison; Michael Leja; Jean-Claude Lesage; Anna O. Marley; Olivier Meslay; Richard Powell; Marc Simpson; Tyler Stovall; and, Helene Valance.
St Simon the Tanner was an ordinary person who was neither a priest nor monk, and yet is one of the most known saints of the Coptic Orthodox Church. At the time of the reign of Al-Muizz, the first ruler of Egypt under the Fatimid dynasty, Pope Abraam the 62nd Patriarch was challenged to prove the authenticity of Matthew 17:20 regarding the faith to move mountains. He was guided by the Virgin Mary to seek the help of St Simon the Tanner, whom the Virgin Mary said the miracle would be performed through. His humility and life of prayer and service gave him the faith that was strong enough to carry out the amazing miracle of moving the Mokattam Mountain. This miracle is an amazing example of God's power and love as He saves His people from perishing The story is told here through the eyes of Pope Abraam, in a way that will cause every reader to fall in love with the life of humility and trust in God, following St Simon's example.
