Early in the twenty-first century, Louisiana, one of the poorest states in the United States, redirected millions in tax dollars from the public coffers in an effort to become the top location site globally for the production of Hollywood films and television series. Why would lawmakers support such a policy? Why would citizens accept the policy's uncomfortable effects on their economy and culture? Almost Hollywood, Nearly New Orleans addresses these questions through a study of the local and everyday experiences of the film economy in New Orleans, Louisiana-a city that has twice pursued the goal of becoming a movie production capital. From the silent era to today's Hollywood South, Vicki Mayer explains that the aura of a film economy is inseparable from a prevailing sense of home, even as it changes that place irrevocably.

Managing in the Corporate Interest

In the 1980s, corporate America experienced massive cutbacks and organizational decline after decades of economic growth and dominance. The institutional and ideological changes that were part of the transformation created a new landscape of work and social relations for corporate middle managers. Managing in the Corporate Interest assesses this landscape by examining a large diversified bank that restructured its organizational and personnel policies to meet a new era of corporate competition. Drawing on interviews with managers and personnel management employees, observation of management training seminars, and documentary sources, this book examines the unique mission handed to middle managers to scale back paternalistic employment policies. It also analyzes the intra-management conflict incurred when corporate top managers attempted to disguise their downsizing strategies and refused to acknowledge their own role in creating the bank’s economic crisis. Vicki Smith's work suggests that quick-fix strategies such as downsizing and cutbacks, which dominated corporate profitability strategies in the 1980s, can corrode trust and legitimacy in the workplace. In the long run, such strategies also undermine consent to the current and very necessary transformation of the way American firms do business. Managing in the Corporate Interest contains important lessons about the rise and decline of economic enterprises and provides a wide-ranging look at changes in the management, structure, and production processes of American corporations. Richly documented and accessibly written, this incisive work will appeal to business people and scholars alike. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1990.

Ultrasound has revolutionized a physician's ability to make urgent and emergent diagnoses at the bedside, and has changed the management of many acute injuries and conditions. This is a practical, concise introduction to what is rapidly becoming an essential tool for all critical care physicians: bedside emergency ultrasound. The Manual covers the full spectrum of conditions diagnosed using ultrasound and gives practical guidance in how to use ultrasound for common invasive procedures. Major applications are introduced using focused diagnostic questions and reviewing the image-acquisition skills needed to answer them. Images of positive and negative findings are presented, and scanning tips for improving image quality. The second edition has been substantially revised and expanded, with new images, updated literature reviews, new applications and clinical algorithms. New chapters cover additional procedures, musculoskeletal and pediatric applications, and the use of ultrasound in resuscitation. This text is invaluable for emergency physicians at all levels.

Vicki Forman gave birth to Evan and Ellie, weighing just a pound at birth, at twenty-three weeks' gestation. During the delivery she begged the doctors to "let her babies go" -- she knew all too well that at twenty-three weeks they could very well die and, if they survived, they would face a high risk of permanent disabilities. However, California law demanded resuscitation. Her daughter died just four days later; her son survived and was indeed multiply disabled: blind, nonverbal, and dependent on a feeding tube.

This book is a non-fiction account of a family caught in a cult for + 25 years. The book decsribes the deception and manipulation that changes the person's life forever. As a young couple we entered into what we thought was a Christian church only to find out there were rules and stipulations that spiraled down into cultish practises. Our three children have been held captive for ten years. One child and her family, husband and three children have escaped but we still have two children and seven grandchildren, we have never met, imprisoned there. In a cult up becomes down and light becomes dark. God becomes man and the followers have no choice but to hear and obey what that man says. Direction as far as education, livlihood, hopes, dreams, spouses even wardrobe are no longer your decision. The "man" chooses for you and you obey or enter "outer darekness" when you leave this world.

Lucille Sinclair Douglass: A Life of Art and Adventure
Steaming up the Yangtze River under a hail of bullets from rebel soldiers, riding a donkey to the edge of the Mongolian Desert, clambering over the ruins of the fabled "lost city" of Angkor Wat....not what you would expect for a woman born in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1878. But they were the real-life adventures of artist and lecturer Lucille Sinclair Douglass. How she went from a lonely childhood in rural Alabama to become a world traveler and one of America's foremost women painter-etchers is a story of determination, dedication, and repeated self-invention. Instead of following the traditional path laid out for women at the turn of the 20th century--marriage and motherhood--Douglass broke her engagement to a young law student and began working to support herself by painting china and teaching the art to others.Defying the odds, she turned that "feminine" past-time of china painting and her talent with pencil, paint, and pastels into a career that took her through war-torn China and to Angkor Wat. From these experiences came the art that won her an international reputation. Her etchings of Chinese and Southeast Asian subjects are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, Acadia University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and Georgetown University. The Angkor Wat etchings, exhibited at the Paris Colonial Exposition in 1931, are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Birmingham Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress. In her own day, Douglass represented the modern New Woman, who demanded the same opportunities men enjoyed--above all, the freedom to choose her own destiny. Her work as an artist--and her gregarious, charismatic personality--opened doors that expanded her professional and personal horizons and eventually made her a minor celebrity in America.Less than a decade after her death, she was largely forgotten, a victim of changing tastes and trends and of a male-dominated canon. As that canon undergoes reconsideration, recognizing the achievements of women artists like Douglass restores depth and richness to the story of art in America.
