For those, of all ages, who may have wondered but not inquired, and who retain a niggling disquiet at their own uncertainty, it is hoped that reading this book will suggest a superordinate structure, where doubts and uncertainties will disappear and an awareness of wonder and personal enlightenment will prevail. This book would also be appropriate for younger students in schools and colleges as an orientation study of various thinkers who have attempted to understand what it is to be human and how we understand the world we exist in.
Disability, Faith and Acceptance

Disability, Faith and Acceptance

What exactly is it like to be a disabled person within society and the Church? The author, himself disabled, argues that disabled people should not be seen merely as a source of inspiration but as valid and valuable contributors who could be encouraged if institutions were to take positive steps to integrate and listen to them. The book's main thrust is to develop a theology which shows that Christ identifies with disabled people and that on the cross shows the same vulnerability which so often concerns and frustrates those who are disabled. The author offers a fresh attempt at developing a theology of disability-something new for British theological discussion. W Graham Monteith was born in Glasgow and educated at Westerlea School for Spastics, Edinburgh and Ross High School, tranent. At the University of Edinburgh he read Sociology and Systematic Theology. From the University of York he gained a BPhil in Sociology of Religion and has carried out post-graduate research in both France and Belgium. He is currently a Parish Minister at the linked parishes of Hoy and Walls and Flotta and Farra, Orkney. Kenneth M Boyd, the editor of the series, is Scottish Director of the Institute of Medical Ethics. Dr Boyd is also Chaplain to Overseas Students at the University of Edinburgh and serves as Associate Minister of St John's and St Cuthbert's Ecumenical Project in Edinburgh.

Rowley documents an era of arctic exploration of which little has been written and which is fast passing from living memory. He captures the traditional way of life in the North before the dramatic changes of the last half century. A member of the last expedition in the Canadian North to depend on traditional techniques, Rowley recounts how they lived as the Inuit did and travelled by dogsled over unexplored land. He describes the isolation, the extraordinary vicissitudes of travel in a sometimes savage environment, and the generosity and kindness of the Inuit. Apart from completing the map of Baffin Island's coastline and finding new islands, Rowley excavated the first pure Dorset site near Igloolik, establishing the Dorset culture beyond doubt. The carvings and artifacts found there, illustrations of which are included in this book, remain among the best and most beautiful that have been recovered. Based on his own diary and the diaries of other members of the expedition, Rowley's captivating story presents the perceptions of a young man faced with a completely alien, yet fascinating, environment and culture. A true and often exciting tale of discovery, Cold Comfort will appeal to a wide audience as well as to those concerned with the Arctic in general. It is an invaluable source for those who specialize in the archaeology, anthropology, geography, and history of northern Canada.
The Story of the Little Big Horn

The Story of the Little Big Horn

W. A. Graham

University of Nebraska Press
1988
pokkari
First published in 1926 and respected ever since for its measured view of the most famous battle in the American West, The Story of the Little Big Horn asks questions that are still being debated. What were the causes of the debacle that wiped out Custer's command? Was it due to lack of a definite battle plan? To lack of correct information about the number, organization, and equipment of the Indians? To Custer's hot-headedness and thirst for glory? To Reno's alleged cowardice? To Benteen's delay in providing reinforcement? In his factual but dramatic account, W. A. Graham suggests that an awesome concatenation of attitudes and circumstances ensured the defeat of the Seventh Cavalry. On that Sunday in June 1876, the Indians were simply better (though not braver) soldiers.

Numerical Analysis Using R

Numerical Analysis Using R

This book presents the latest numerical solutions to initial value problems and boundary value problems described by ODEs and PDEs. The author offers practical methods that can be adapted to solve wide ranges of problems and illustrates them in the increasingly popular open source computer language R, allowing integration with more statistically based methods. The book begins with standard techniques, followed by an overview of 'high resolution' flux limiters and WENO to solve problems with solutions exhibiting high gradient phenomena. Meshless methods using radial basis functions are then discussed in the context of scattered data interpolation and the solution of PDEs on irregular grids. Three detailed case studies demonstrate how numerical methods can be used to tackle very different complex problems. With its focus on practical solutions to real-world problems, this book will be useful to students and practitioners in all areas of science and engineering, especially those using R.

The book also delves into the aftermath of the battle, including the impact it had on the Native American tribes and the broader implications for US-Western relations.
