I am very moved by these stories, and not only because they are my father's. They are evidence of the human spirit that refuses to be overcome by circumstances, even though the circumstances may be horrific. In the overview of the facts of his life, you see him heading off to war full of energy and focus, albeit in his case volunteering to undertake any exceptionally dangerous mission as he was unattached and had recently lost both his father and his beautiful home. Like everyone heading off to war, he was completely unaware of what horrors lay in store for him. He was involved in two major evacuations of troops in Greece in the early part of the war when the Allied troops were not doing very well. He suffered the loss of many of his men, which he obviously felt very keenly. A German army unit captured him as a consequence of a demeaning order from his superior. This capture resulted in severe injuries and the loss of his memory. He then spent nearly two years in POW hospitals and camps until he was repatriated and sent back to New Zealand in 1943. Despite all this he was contacted by the resistance while in the prison camps and obviously became active within the network. H Force was the name of this Intelligence Unit, and it covered underground operations in Italy, Greece, Albania, Yugoslavia and Crete. He refused to talk directly about any of this, but there were enough hints to intrigue. In our ever-present quest to define what it is to be "human", I believe these stories of my father make a humble contribution.

1st Sergeant Arthur "Bud" Locke was based at Clark Field in the Philippines, as part of the USAAF's Far East Air Service Command, in 1941. He was taken prisoner with many others in the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, experienced the Bataan Death March, and was transported to a POW work-camp in Kobe, Japan, from which he was liberated at the end of the war. This is the story of his war.
This book isn't a story it's an historical account of what life was like for the German POW's who spent time incarcerated in Camp 266 at Langdon Hills in Essex. The camp opened just before the end of the Second World War and saw the arrival of its first inhabitants in April 1945 before finally closing its doors in June 1948. The camp could hold up to 800 prisoners at a time and also had satellite camps at nearby places such as Tillingham and Purfleet. It includes accounts from some of the prisoners themselves, looking at what they did before the outbreak of the war. It then looks at how and where they were captured, their time spent at the camp and what they did after the war on their release. Some met local girls, fell in love, married and began new lives living in England. Their personal stories along with newspaper articles of the day, prisoners letters as well as other documents, help bring the book to life giving it a truly unique feeling. There are stories from some of the local residents who lived through it all and got to know some of the POW's quite closely. In some cases this included inviting them in to their homes and befriending them. Some of these friendships lasted for years after the war. Only the passage of time causing some of them to finally succumb. Read their stories and find yourself transported back in time to a bygone era that was the start of a new begining for all of us.

This book provides an exposition on the professional and cultural life of Patrick Weston Joyce (1827–1914), more popularly known as P. W. Joyce, who lived and worked during the final phase of British rule in Ireland. The focus throughout is very much on how family, locale, and schooling influenced this significant Irish patriot, polymath, and pioneering pedagogue who worked across a range of disciplines, including education, language, history, and music. Moreover, attention is paid to how his achievements were possible only because of the variety of leading roles he played in the development of the Irish National School System between 1845 and 1893. Thus positioned, Joyce was in many ways a significant choreographer of a slow revolution in which education, in both formal and informal settings, was used to educate the Irish people regarding their cultural heritage.

The ternary alloy Ni-W-P and its WS2 nanocomposite coatings were successfully obtained on low-carbon steel using the electroless plating technique. The sodium tungstate (Na2WO4) concentration in the bath was varied to obtain Ni-W-P deposits containing various Ni and P contents. WS2 composite was obtained with a suitable concentration of Na2WO4 in Ni-P coating. These deposits were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) studies. The corrosion behavior was investigated by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies in 3.5 wt % NaCl solutions, and the corrosion rates of the coatings for Ni-P, Ni-W-P, and Ni-W-P-WS2 were found to be 2.571 10-5, 8.219 10-7, and 7.986 10-7 g/h, respectively. An increase in the codeposition of alloying metal tungsten (W) enhanced the corrosion resistance and microhardness and changed the structure and morphology of the deposits. Incorporation of WS2nanoparticles to Ni-W-P alloy coating reduced the coefficient of friction from 0.16 to 0.11 and also helped in improving the corrosion resistance of the coating further.
