Human Nature and the Limits of Darwinism

Human Nature and the Limits of Darwinism

Whitley R.P. Kaufman

Palgrave Macmillan
2016
sidottu
This book compares two competing theories of human nature: the more traditional theory espoused in different forms by centuries of western philosophy and the newer, Darwinian model. In the traditional view, the human being is a hybrid being, with a lower, animal nature and a higher, rational or “spiritual” component. The competing Darwinian account does away with the idea of a higher nature and attempts to provide a complete reduction of human nature to the evolutionary goals of survival and reproduction. Whitley Kaufman presents the case that the traditional conception, regardless of one's religious views or other beliefs, provides a superior account of human nature and culture. We are animals, but we are also rational animals. Kaufman explores the most fundamental philosophical questions as they relate to this debate over human nature—for example: Is free will an illusion? Is morality a product of evolution, with no objective basis? Is reason merely a tool for promoting reproductive success? Is art an adaptation for attracting mates? Is there any higher meaning or purpose to human life? Human Nature and the Limits of Darwinism aims to assess the competing views of human nature and present a clear account of the issues on this most pressing of questions. It engages in a close analysis of the numerous recent attempts to explain all human aims in terms of Darwinian processes and presents the arguments in support of the traditional conception of human nature.

American Bards

American Bards

Whitley Edward

Walt Whitman has long been regarded as the quintessential American bard, the poet who best represents all that is distinctive about life in the United States. Whitman himself encouraged this view, but he was also quick to remind his readers that he was an unlikely candidate for the office of national poet, and that his working-class upbringing and radical take on human sexuality often put him at odds with American culture. While American literary history has tended to credit Whitman with having invented the persona of the national outsider as the national bard, Edward Whitley recovers three of Whitman's contemporaries who adopted similar personae: James M. Whitfield, an African American separatist and abolitionist; Eliza R. Snow, a Mormon pioneer and women's leader; and John Rollin Ridge, a Cherokee journalist and Native-rights advocate. These three poets not only provide a counterpoint to the Whitmanian persona of the outsider bard, but they also reframe the criteria by which generations of scholars have characterized Whitman as America's poet. This effort to resituate Whitman's place in American literary history provides an innovative perspective on the most familiar poet of the United States and the culture from which he emerged.

Seinfeld and the Comic Vision analyzes the television situation comedy Seinfeld to form a theory of comedy—the comic vision—arguing that comedy should not be seen merely as entertainment, but deserves to be taken seriously as expressing a philosophical worldview. Whitley Kaufman demonstrates how in Seinfeld, and in comedy on a larger scale, characters are given license to violate social norms and to fail to live up to societal ideals in a way that shows they remain fundamentally decent people. Kaufman examines how comedy can be seen as a celebration of the “lower” aspects of human nature—our more animal or bodily side—but argues that the comic vision is not cynical or pessimistic, but rather fundamentally affirmative of human nature and of life, despite the many human limitations. Scholars of television studies, media studies, pop culture, and philosophy will find this book particularly useful.

The Key: A True Encounter

The Key: A True Encounter

Whitley Strieber

From the bestselling author of Communion comes the mysterious true story of how an unknown visitor barged into Streiber's hotel room late one night--and imparted extraordinary lessons in personal development and man's fate that challenge us to rethink every assumption about the meaning of life. At two-thirty in the morning of June 6, 1998, Whitley Streiber was awakened by somebody knocking on his hotel room door. A man came in, and everything he said was life-altering. This is the unsettling and ultimately enlightening narrative of what happened that night. Strieber was never really sure who this strange and knowing visitor was--a "Master of Wisdom"? A figure from a different realm of consciousness? A preternaturally intelligent being? He called him the Master of the Key. The one thing of which Strieber was certain is that both the man and the encounter were real. The main concern of the Master of the Key is to save each of us from self-imprisonment. "Mankind is trapped," the stranger tells Strieber. "I want to help you spring the trap." In a sweeping exchange between Strieber and the stranger--which takes the form of a classical student- teacher dialogue in pursuit of inner understanding--the unknown man presents a lesson in human potential, esoteric psychology, and man's fate. He illuminates why man has been caught in a cycle of repeat violence and self-destruction--and the slender, but very real, possibility for release. In its breadth and intimacy, The Key is on par with contemporary metaphysical traditions, such as A Course in Miracles, or even with the dialogues of modern wisdom teachers, such as D.T. Suzuki and Carl Jung.

Jesus: A New Vision is a completely new look at the life of Jesus, what happened after his crucifixion and how his story completely overturned the old pagan religion of the Roman empire and altered history. It draws on the latest archaeology and scientific research to develop a new vision that neither asserts his divinity nor dismisses him as a secular phenomenon, but rather looks at his humanity-and ours-in an entirely new way.It is neither a Christian book nor an anti-Christian book. It is not a secular book either, but advocates that Jesus lived his life not to show us that he was God, but rather to show us that he was truly human, and leave behind the message that we can also embrace our full humanity, including the hidden powers of miracle and rebirth that have made us assume that he was a god. Who was Jesus and who were the people, barely mentioned in the gospels, who aided him through his passion? Who was the woman in Bethany who anointed him with Nard, and why did she do it? Who owned the Upper Room? Who was the boy who ran away at Gethsemane and who was the man sitting at the tomb when the women found it empty? If Jesus reappeared after the crucifixion, why did he keep his presence secret? And what is the incredible message of the Shroud of Turin, not only about Jesus, but about all of us? After Saul was blinded on the road to Damascus he reappeared weeks later as Paul the Apostle, one of the greatest theologians in history. Who educated him in Damascus? In this magisterial work, Whitley Strieber takes the story of Jesus from his birth through his heretofore hidden childhood to his crucifixion and beyond, into the almost miraculous Christianization of the Roman Empire with all its attendant horrors, and offers a new vision of Jesus as a teacher and the source of a great human empowerment that was buried when the doctrine known as the Nicene Creed was adopted. Jesus: A New Vision-the only book of its kind. Like Warday, Communion, Nature's End, Superstorm and A New World, another astonishing Whitley Strieber breakthrough book.

Communion is the iconic classic in which Whitley Strieber describes his 1985 close encounter experiences. This book, which fundamentally changed the way we understand close encounters and alien abductions, is presented here with a new introduction by the author. The message of Communion, that something unknown is really happening to people but that we have not studied it enough to understand it, remains as timely now as it was in 1987 when the book was first published. And Whitley Strieber's riveting account of what he experienced, along with his relentless and expert pursuit of the reality behind the experience, is to this day the greatest such account ever published.Do not miss this great classic and the powerful introduction that explores the situation as it stands today--even more provocative now, as official sources are admitting that UFOs are real unknowns and that they seem to have something to do with close encounters.
