A Companion to Alain Chartier (c.1385-1430)
A Companion to Alain Chartier: Father of French Eloquence brings together fourteen contributions that offer a range of perspectives and insights into the works of this exceptional late medieval author. As heir to the past and herald of the future, Chartier reinvented the traditional, whether in Latin or French, verse or prose. Chartier’s open-ended, dialogic works and his own politically-engaged writing inspired his successors to think and write in new ways about ethics, the individual’s role in society, relationships between men and women, and the responsibility of a poet to his/her audience. As these essays show, Chartier’s renovation of poetic form and content had considerable influence over successive generations of writers in France and across Europe. Contributors are: Adrian Armstrong, Florence Bouchet, Emma Cayley, Daisy Delogu, Ashby Kinch, James C. Laidlaw, Marta Marfany, Deborah McGrady, Joan E. McRae, Jean-Claude Mühlethaler, Liv Robinson, Camille Serchuk, Andrea Tarnowski, Craig Taylor, and Hanno Wijsman.

A Journey into the Philosophy of Alain Locke

A Journey into the Philosophy of Alain Locke

Johnny Washington

Praeger Publishers Inc

sidottu
Washington provides a detailed guide to the philosophy of Alain Locke, one of the most influential African American thinkers of our time. The work gives special attention to what Washington calls Destiny Studies, an approach which allows a people to concentrate on their past, present, and future possibilities, and to view the experience of a race as a coherent unity, rather than a set of fragmented historical happenings. In providing a broad vision of Locke's ideas, Washington considers the views of Booker T. Washington and his contemporaries, the theories of anthropologists concerning race and ethnicity, and many of the social issues current in our own age. By doing so, Washington affirms the importance of Locke as a philosopher and demonstrates the impact of Locke on the destiny of African Americans.

The Port of Calais Series of Alain and Juliette 1
In 1804 was discovered an attempt of coup d'etat against Napoleon, who then held the post of first consul. The responsibility of organizing the plot was attributed to the Duke of Enghien Louis Anthony Henry of Bourbon, the last descendant of the family Conde, who lived in exile in Baden and who was done by the French secret service, to be judged in Paris by a military tribunal, chaired by the General Pierre Augustin Hulin. The duke always declared to be innocent, but he was condemned to the firing squad, while the other 42 plotters, finished on trial and then in prison. "The Port of Calais" is a reconstruction of the episode, made from an unusual point of view, the view of the Count Alain de Savoia-Soissons, colonel of the French Navy and a cousin of the Duke of Enghien. During the organization of the conspiracy Alain meets in an inn of Calais Juliette the last Marquis De Sade's daughter, forced into prostitution after the arrest of her father...

French homosexuality covered the best of times and the worst of times. The first country in which homosexuals were free to bed whomever they wished, and this from 1791, and knew a period so wondrous it was called the Belle poque, where Montmartre cabarets swarmed with life in all its uninhibited forms, Toulouse-Lautrec recording it all in breathtaking art, the art itself a new form: Art Nouveau, inspired by natural forms, the curved lines of plants and flowers, never before seen colors, where Mistinguett exchanged Maurice Chevalier as lover for an artist aged 16 and Jean Cocteau enhanced films with the beauty of Jean Marias, as did Marcel Carn in Dr le de Drame with the unequalled beauty of Jean-Pierre Aumont. Diaghilev made Paris the ballet capital of Europe thanks to his lover Nijinsky, and Stravinsky astonished the world with his Sacre du printemps as Diaghilev had commissioned him to do. Ravel rivaled Gide and a visiting Gore Vidal for the attention of Arab lads, Genet blew smoke through a straw from one cell to another, the men on each side taking their individual pleasure. A nonstop party that the German occupiers of Paris encouraged during the war and honored with their presence, while in Berlin they sent homosexuals off to concentration camps. It was the worst of times where, under the law that prohibited public offenses to decency, homosexuals were tracked down and persecuted, jailed after the First World War, executed after the Second, where gay marriage was voted in 2013 yet a boy, today, would be crazy to admit to his locker-room buddies that he preferred them to the chirping maidens in the showers next door, this because, in the hearts of the French, nothing, or little, has changed since good Christians began burning homosexuals at the stake 2,000 very bloody years ago. This is the history of those good and bad times.
