"Martin Hewitt, Investigator" is a collection of short stories written by Arthur Morrison and published in 1894. The book follows the adventures of private detective Martin Hewitt as he solves various cases in the Victorian era. The stories are narrated by Hewitt's friend and assistant, Brett, who provides a unique perspective on Hewitt's methods and successes. Each story presents a new case for Hewitt to solve, ranging from theft and fraud to kidnapping and murder. Throughout the book, Hewitt is portrayed as a brilliant and methodical detective who is able to solve even the most complex cases using his intelligence, attention to detail, and knowledge of human nature. He often relies on his deductive reasoning and observation skills to uncover clues and piece together the truth. Despite his success, Hewitt is not portrayed as infallible. He is shown to make mistakes and sometimes finds himself in dangerous situations, but he always manages to come out on top. Moreover, "Martin Hewitt, Investigator" is an entertaining and engaging read for fans of detective fiction and historical mysteries.

Tales of mean streets is a collection that offers a stark portrayal of life in London's East End, capturing the hardships, hopes, and quiet endurance of people living on the margins of society. The work delves into the challenges faced by those navigating poverty, limited opportunities, and the unrelenting demands of urban life. It examines how environment shapes character, revealing the complexities of resilience and despair found in the everyday experiences of individuals struggling to maintain dignity amid adversity. Through its richly detailed scenes, the collection brings to life the atmosphere of crowded streets, cramped lodgings, and the social tensions that define the community. The narratives emphasize small acts of kindness and fleeting moments of joy that illuminate otherwise difficult circumstances. With a focus on ordinary people and their private battles, the book offers insight into human strength and vulnerability, presenting stories that are both deeply personal and reflective of broader social realities.

Those who retain any memory of the great law cases of fifteen or twenty years back will remember, at least, the title of that extraordinary will case, "Bartley v. Bartley and others," which occupied the Probate Court for some weeks on end, and caused an amount of public interest rarely accorded to any but the cases considered in the other division of the same court. The case itself was noted for the large quantity of remarkable and unusual evidence presented by the plaintiff's side-evidence that took the other party completely by surprise, and overthrew their case like a house of cards. The affair will, perhaps, be more readily recalled as the occasion of the sudden rise to eminence in their profession of Messrs. Crellan, Hunt & Crellan, solicitors for the plaintiff-a result due entirely to the wonderful ability shown in this case of building up, apparently out of nothing, a smashing weight of irresistible evidence. That the firm has since maintained-indeed enhanced-the position it then won for itself need scarcely be said here; its name is familiar to everybody. But there are not many of the outside public who know that the credit of the whole performance was primarily due to a young clerk in the employ of Messrs. Crellan, who had been given charge of the seemingly desperate task of collecting evidence in the case.

It was considered an intrepid thing for Walter Besant to do when, twelve or thirteen years ago, he invaded the great East End of London and drew upon its unknown wealth of varied material to people that most charming novel, "All Sorts and Conditions of Men." Until then the West End knew little of its contiguous neighbor in the East. Dickens's kaleidoscopic views of low life in the South of London were manifestly caricatures of the slum specimens of human nature which he purposely sought and often distorted to suit his bizarre humor. Mr. Besant may be fairly considered as the pioneer of those who have since descended to the great unchartered region of East London, about which, so far as our knowledge of the existing conditions of human life in that community are concerned, we remained until, as it were yesterday, almost as ignorant as of the undiscovered territories in Central Africa.

I had been working double tides for a month: at night on my morning paper, as usual; and in the morning on an evening paper as locum tenens for another man who was taking a holiday. This was an exhausting plan of work, although it only actually involved some six hours' attendance a day, or less, at the two offices. I turned up at the headquarters of my own paper at ten in the evening, and by the time I had seen the editor, selected a subject, written my leader, corrected the slips, chatted, smoked, and so on, and cleared off, it was very usually one o'clock. This meant bed at two, or even three, after supper at the club.

I shall here set down in language as simple and straightforward as I can command, the events which followed my recent return to England; and I shall leave it to others to judge whether or not my conduct has been characterised by foolish fear and ill-considered credulity. At the same time I have my own opinion as to what would have been the behaviour of any other man of average intelligence and courage in the same circumstances; more especially a man of my exceptional upbringing and retired habits.

My grandfather was a publican-and a sinner, as you will see. His public-house was the Hole in the Wall, on the river's edge at Wapping; and his sins-all of them that I know of-are recorded in these pages. He was a widower of some small substance, and the Hole in the Wall was not the sum of his resources, for he owned a little wharf on the river Lea. I called him Grandfather Nat, not to distinguish him among a multitude of grandfathers-for indeed I never knew another of my own-but because of affectionate habit; a habit perhaps born of the fact that Nathaniel Kemp was also my father's name. My own is Stephen.

The author of this book was born in Chicago, Illinois on the Southside. He attended public elementary and high school in Chicago. He also attended college in the Chicago area. He works full time and continues to reflect on life's mysteries. Although having limited discretionary time, he felt compelled to explore the art and complexity of the writer's craft. His book of poetry and prose is dedicated to all the brothers who wanted to, but didn't get a chance to live their dreams. The following excerpt from his poem titled "for Writers" expresses this sentiment as derived from conversations with friends and acquaintances over the years.
