Our lives are but a short journey; during which we may learn about ourselves, and the world in which we find ourselves. The voyage of life is a unique experience for each of us, and in my view it is better to arrive at life's inescapable destination with some splendid memories to revisit, than curse impotently against the inevitable dying of the light. When I was a young man, sex mixed with music, beauty and curiosity was the only deity I needed. I need it less now as my body ages and decays. I still appreciate beauty and music, and I am even able with the help of chemical assistance to enjoy something of the sex that I enjoyed as a young man. But I also know that for me all this is ending. I have come to appreciate that I can know nothing of the Divine; after all, I am only human, but through my passions I have glimpsed the Divine light which surrounds us. My life has taught me to enjoy my consciousness, and marvel at the miracle of my senses and my ability to perceive what is all around me; under my finger-tips, on the end of my penis or before my eyes. That is, I am able to appreciate that the greatest wonder is that we all know that we will die one day, yet each of us continues to live as if we were immortal.

He compassionately relates the horrendous living conditions suffered by the prisoners, describing the sickness and disease he encountered and his desperate, often fruitless, struggle to save as many lives as possible. Amidst immeasurable horrors, his descriptions of the banalities of everyday life and diagrams of the camp's layout take on a new poignancy, while anatomic line drawings detail the medical conditions and his efforts to treat them. Gopegui's social commitments find expression in her concern for solidarity and collective projects. These become more radical over time in response to a disenchantment with the evolution of the left in Spain and to the global impact of the capitalist economic system, giving rise to increasingly interventionist narrative strategies. The core theme of solidarity is explored in relation to the collective experience of Spain's largely consensualdemocratic transition and to the apparent erosion of collective goals in post-transition society. Gopegui's discourse of solidarity is examined through engagement with theorists of advanced modernity, including Ulrich Beck's 'risksociety' model and various contemporary reflections on the concept of solidarity. Centred on Gopegui's first four novels, the study situates analysis of these within the perspective of her later works and illuminates her artisticand intellectual trajectory by drawing on an extensive array of her non-fiction writings and personal interviews, one of which is published here for the first time.
