Our lives are but a short journey; during which we may learn about ourselves, and the world in which we find ourselves. The voyage of life is a unique experience for each of us, and in my view it is better to arrive at life's inescapable destination with some splendid memories to revisit, than curse impotently against the inevitable dying of the light. When I was a young man, sex mixed with music, beauty and curiosity was the only deity I needed. I need it less now as my body ages and decays. I still appreciate beauty and music, and I am even able with the help of chemical assistance to enjoy something of the sex that I enjoyed as a young man. But I also know that for me all this is ending. I have come to appreciate that I can know nothing of the Divine; after all, I am only human, but through my passions I have glimpsed the Divine light which surrounds us. My life has taught me to enjoy my consciousness, and marvel at the miracle of my senses and my ability to perceive what is all around me; under my finger-tips, on the end of my penis or before my eyes. That is, I am able to appreciate that the greatest wonder is that we all know that we will die one day, yet each of us continues to live as if we were immortal.
Been Dead, Never Been To Europe: My Recovery From The Widowmaker Heart Attack And The Brain Injury That Came With It
Jon Johnston was an active, healthy adult when he dropped dead suddenly of a widowmaker heart attack. He was not expected to live, after being dead for more than 20 minutes, but if he did survive, his brain would forever be damaged due to oxygen deprivation.Alternating between humor, sadness, and anger at his body's betrayal, Jon takes us with him as he puts his life back together. At the beginning, he sees the trauma as a minor inconvenience and expects a speedy recovery. As he realizes the damage to his heart is permanent, he is hit with another setback when he is diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, leaving him with memory loss, debilitating headaches, and a loss of identity. Tasks that had been trivial had become onerous endeavors, and his life became an unexpected challenge.Been Dead, Never Been to Europe offers a real-life view of what it takes to rebuild after a devastating event, to accept an unexpected present and future, and to discover a new identity. Been Dead, Never Been to Europe will appeal to readers who seek memoirs of resilience, and to those whose own lives have been affected by unexpected trauma.

Between 1941 and 1945 as many as 70,000 inmates died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in northwestern Germany. The exact number will never be known. A large number of these deaths were caused by malnutrition and disease, mainly typhus, shortly before and after liberation. It was at this time, in April of 1945, that Michael Hargrave answered a notice at the Westminster Hospital Medical School for ‘volunteers’. On the day of his departure the 21-year-old learned that he was being sent to Bergen-Belsen, liberated only two weeks before. This firsthand account, a diary written for his mother, details Michael's month-long experience at the camp. He compassionately relates the horrendous living conditions suffered by the prisoners, describing the sickness and disease he encountered and his desperate, often fruitless, struggle to save as many lives as possible. Amidst immeasurable horrors, his descriptions of the banalities of everyday life and diagrams of the camp's layout take on a new poignancy, while anatomic line drawings detail the medical conditions and his efforts to treat them. Original newspaper cuttings and photographs of the camp, many previously unpublished, add a further layer of texture to the endeavors of an inexperienced medical student faced with extreme human suffering.

Been There Done It Won The Medals Got The T.Shirt
This is my true story and experiences. I'm just an ordinary guy who was lucky enough to spend 14 years working in a unique and unusual job working for a company called NAAFI where as a civillian I helped run and then managed a small shop on board Royal Navy Warships. Follow my ups and downs. highs and lows share my adventures, laughs and tears as i travelled the world selling sweeties to sailors. I suggest this book is best suited for persons aged 14 and over, as some of the content though mild is very suggestive.

This book is the first major study of one of Spain's most celebrated younger novelists, Belén Gopegui, whose work stands apart from other writers of her generation for its uncompromising focus on the social function of literature. This book is the first major study of one of Spain's most celebrated younger novelists, Belén Gopegui, whose work stands apart from other writers of her generation for its uncompromising focus on the social function of literature. Gopegui's social commitments find expression in her concern for solidarity and collective projects. These become more radical over time in response to a disenchantment with the evolution of the left in Spain and to the global impact of the capitalist economic system, giving rise to increasingly interventionist narrative strategies. The core theme of solidarity is explored in relation to the collective experience of Spain's largely consensualdemocratic transition and to the apparent erosion of collective goals in post-transition society. Gopegui's discourse of solidarity is examined through engagement with theorists of advanced modernity, including Ulrich Beck's 'risksociety' model and various contemporary reflections on the concept of solidarity. Centred on Gopegui's first four novels, the study situates analysis of these within the perspective of her later works and illuminates her artisticand intellectual trajectory by drawing on an extensive array of her non-fiction writings and personal interviews, one of which is published here for the first time. Hayley Rabanal is Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at the University of Sheffield.

"Julian Kornhauser writes of "the miracle of the pillow with four corners," a button "deprived of its thread," a "piece of glass" flecked with blood -- the luminous things of the world that reflect with haunting precision our precarious relationship to the "expenses and losses" of beauty. Piotr Florczyk introduces American readers to one of Poland's most significant contemporary poets in translations that bring alive Kornhauser's lines with a thrilling immediacy." - Michael Collier
