Typisch Frau, Typisch Mann?

Forty viewpoints in seven instances on the reconstruction of two enviroments by Björn Lövin
This book contains photographs whose origins and domicile are under negotiation. The basis of the project is made of the original archive photographs of a series of exhibitions by installation artist Björn Lövin in the 70s and 80s, via images from a digital reconstruction of the same exhibits and ending with documentary photographs from a physical reconstruction process at Moderna Museet in Sweden in 2022. Taking place between the covers of this book is a kind of photographic dissolution and recollection which is the result of many years of researching Björn Lövin’s world. An encounter between visual documentation from different places—from the archives, via a reconstruction in a digital space and back to the physical. The ”image of” moves between different materialities and places, both mental and mechanical. Less accessible spaces that through the images’ existence can be demonstrated and be imagined. What does the image look like after being transfered? The documentation process raised questions about the inherent characteristics of photography, the photographic layers and their relation to each other. When transported, the photographic imprint, its indexicality, is stretched and adjusted, doubling back in the end. While the focus has been on Björn Lövin’s environments, there has at the same time been a dissolution of some of the basic premises of photography: form, thought, meaning change places with light, reflection, glow. And back again. Including essays by Björn Larsson, Lila Lee-Morrison, Lívia Nolasco-Rózsás and forward by Peo Olsson

Mass Transport in Magmatic Systems

Mass Transport in Magmatic Systems

Bjorn Mysen

nidottu
Mass Transport in Magmatic Systems describes the properties and processes of these natural occurrences, including a description and discussions of how properties can be used for quantitative description of mass and energy transport on, and in, Earth and terrestrial planets. As the experimentally obtained chemical and physical properties of magma is scattered across literature, this book provides a comprehensive volume on the topic. Moreover, links between properties and processes are rarely appreciated. This makes it challenging for a non-experimentalist to access, evaluate, and apply such data.
Austerity from the Left

Austerity from the Left

Björn Bremer

Austerity became the predominant fiscal policy response to the Great Recession in Europe. After a brief period of 'emergency Keynesianism' from 2008 to 2010, even the centre-left abandoned plans for deficit spending and accepted austerity as the dogma of the day. In this book, Björn Bremer explains how this came about and explores its political consequences, combining qualitative and quantitative methods and drawing on a wide range of empirical evidence to study both the demand- and supply-side of politics. Based on this evidence, the book argues that a complex interaction of electoral and ideational pressures pushed social democratic parties towards orthodox fiscal policies. As government debt became a taboo following the Greek sovereign debt crisis, social democratic parties endorsed austerity to increase their perceived economic competence and fiscal credibility. This decision was legitimized by economic ideas inspired by supply-side economics, which had become popular among social democrats at the end of the twentieth century. Although the book shows that social democratic austerity was not inevitable, powerful feedback effects of the Third Way thus trapped and divided the centre-left during the crisis. This undermined the ability of social democratic parties to oppose austerity and eventually contributed to their electoral crisis in the shadow of the Great Recession.
Light in the Dark

Light in the Dark

Björn Norðfjörð

OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS INC

Light in the Dark tells the dramatic history of Icelandic cinema from its modest origin in the early twentieth century to the heterogenous and complex national cinema of today. In tracing this wide-ranging history, author Björn Norðfjörð describes the constant tug between local and national cultural forces and the transnational and global pull of world cinema. Norðfjörð starts by casting light on the earliest films made in the country, expanding outward to survey Scandinavians adaptations of Icelandic literature filmed during the late silent period, documentaries of the interwar period, and the first narrative features following the end of World War II and national independence. He traces the emergence of national cinema proper to the 1980s, with the foundation of the Icelandic Film Fund, explores the subsequent impact of first European art cinema and then Hollywood genre cinema, and finally considers the remarkable international success of Icelandic cinema in the twentieth-first century. Along the way, Norðfjörð draws attention to many additional issues and topics regarding Icelandic cinema, including depictions of nature and animals, the aesthetics of fire and ice, the role of film adaptation, the impact of Nordic noir and crime fiction, Hollywood runaway productions, and the question of women's cinema in Icelandic filmmaking. Throughout the book, films from all periods of Icelandic filmmaking are analysed in detail with equal emphasis on content and form, including both lesser known titles and key films like The Outlaw and His Wife (Victor Sjöström, 1917), Salka Valka (Arne Mattson, 1954), Land and Sons (Ágúst Guðmundsson, 1980), When the Raven Flies (Hrafn Gunnlaugsson, 1984), Cold Fever (Friðrik Þór Friðriksson, 1995), 101 Reykjavík (Baltasar Kormákur), Rams (Grímur Hákonarson, 2015) and Godland (Hlynur Pálmason, 2022).

How to Deep-Freeze a Mammoth

How to Deep-Freeze a Mammoth

Björn Kurtén

Columbia University Press

sidottu
How does bison meat taste after being frozen for 30,000 years? Were Ice Age cave painters trying to create "art" or just record history? How did ancient oil spills occur, before there were oil companies to create them? Those are just some of the questions renowned paleontologist Bjorn Kurten answers in this collection of lighthearted essays on fossils, ancient life, and related topics. Written for the general reader, these lively pieces range from a look at how scientific theories are created to some new views of old myths. Among the topics Kurten examines are the history of the Mediterranean Sea, the origin of birds, the theory of plate tectonics (continental drift), and the discovery of Piltdown Man, the "missing link" fossil forgery that fooled scientists for more than 40 years. And, true to its title, the book offers a humorous "recipe" for freezing a mammoth that is tundra-tested, if not totally foolproof. "You may have to expend a few hundred mammoths before everything works out," the reader is cautioned, "But there are plenty of them." (Although the author hasn't tasted the fruits of his mammoth recipe, he did feast on some ancient bison meat that dated from 30,000 years ago. Kurten described the taste as "agreeable.") Throughout these essays Kurten brings the prehistoric world alive with enthusiasm and humor, emphasizing that paleontology is the study of those that lived long ago instead of those who are long dead. As he says, "Isn't it more fun to see a dinosaur as something that used to live, rather than as the monstrous heap of bones which it happens to be at present?"
