Brian Kane

In this thoughtful text, Brian Kane explores the foundations, methods, and conclusions of Catholic thinking on bioethics. With the advent of medical technologies and treatments that once seemed impossible, scientific knowledge brings with it opportunities to enhance, damage, or even destroy our humanity. Catholic theology has a long tradition of exploring this relationship between science and the human person. By providing an introductory explanation of Catholic theological thinking on bioethics, Kane offers a systematic approach to questions on the meaning of human existence and the power of human choice. He explains the ways Catholic readers can better understand ethical dilemmas and decisions regarding medicine and health care—both individually and collectively as members of society.

OCIA teams often struggle with getting catechumens and candidates to participate regularly in the church’s liturgy. Those who do often feel bored or confused, or they see it as a nice tradition or an inconvenient obligation rather than the heart of our Catholic faith. So we fill the gap with more catechesis that explains the liturgy to seekers, and we pray they will have a better personal experience on Sunday. Yet neither causes them to love the liturgy as we do. In Divine Blessing: Liturgical Formation in the RCIA, Timothy P. O’Malley shows us how we can break out of a classroom model about liturgy and instead invite seekers to be formed by the Risen Christ through the liturgy. This book will give you a process for preparing your catechumens and candidates to learn the liturgy’s symbolic language of self-giving love that will sustain them with divine blessing and train them to be Christ’s disciples in the world.
A Blessing to Each Other A New Account of Jewish and Christian Relations
This book gives a new account of the story of Jewish and Christian relations. It focuses on the little-known instances of goodwill and cooperation that occurred between Christians and Jews throughout history. Moments and eras marked by teamwork and trust have been overshadowed by narratives that concentrate on the tragic past. This has resulted in an inaccurate portrayal of both Christianity and Judaism. Jewish and Christian scholars have worked together since World War II, however, to bring new insights to biblical studies, to challenge old paradigms of difference, and to contribute to a deeper understanding of Jewish and Christian teachings. This book interprets their research for a non-specialist audience. It covers issues that have paradoxically brought adherents of the two faiths together, such as biblical studies and examinations of Jesus and the apostle Paul. An in-depth consideration of the Holocaust and subsequent efforts to reconcile and even revise Christian and Jewish theology reveals how radically things have changed, thanks to interreligious partnerships. Mutual efforts also led to the establishment of the nation of Israel. Readers will emerge with a new appreciation for the ties that exist between Jews and Christians, and a better understanding of where the two faiths converge and where they diverge.
The Blessing of Africa

The Blessing of Africa

Keith Augustus Burton

According to some estimates, Africa will soon have the highest concentration of Christians in the world. But African Christianity has had a long and conflicted history. Even today, modern misinterpretations of Scripture argue for God's curse upon the dark-skinned peoples of Africa. In this comprehensive study, Keith Burton traces the story of biblical Africa and the place of the Bible in the land of Ham. Beginning with the Old Testament, he explores the geography of biblical Africa and moves beyond stereotypical discussions of African ethnicity and identity. He then chronicles the African presence in the church from the New Testament onward, paying particular attention to the growth of Islam in Africa as well as the impact of European colonialism and the slave trade. Coming to the modern era, he examines the achievements of African Christianity and visionary efforts to adapt and reclaim Christianity for the African context. Burton invites readers to discover anew the relevance of the biblical narrative for African Christians as well as Scripture's influence on African Christianity. This invigorating work places the story of the Bible and African Christianity in a wider global context and challenges readers to think differently about history and the biblical world.

Gregory of Narek

Gregory of Narek (c. 945-1003), a monk and a priest, is best know for his poetic works, and one of the few armenian commentators on the Song of Songs, which was so great a focus among western monastic writers of the patristic and medieval periods. Living during a period of cultural and religious renaissance which preceded the Turkish and Mongol invasions of Armenia, and in a period of conflict between the non-Chalcedonian Christians of his native land and their Byzantine neighbors, Grigor worked from the Armenian text of the Song, which is slightly longer than the Septuagint or Hebrew versions and contains passages which vary from them. In his commentary Grigor traces themes and draws on other scriptural books to remind readers that every human person is endowed with an innate love for God which, in his words, 'cannot be sapped'.

"The author, who followed Johnny Cash's career for five decades, has written a serious and insightful book on the conflicts at work in Cash's life and songs: the powerful Christian witness alongside the addictions and occasional chaos. Rooted in Scriptural quotations, the book analyses the lyrics during the good and bad years, arguing that the singer-songwriter's love of Gospel inspired songs, as well as other genres, never left him and influenced his mission to prisoners. Fans of Cash will discover aspects of his life perhaps not previously known." - The Catholic Herald (UK)For a remarkably diverse range of people, to know Johnny Cash and his music is to feel a kinship with him. He lived under a powerful blessing which never left him. And he was influenced by a curse from which he never wholly shook free.It is not possible to understand either Cash or the times he lived in without understanding something of how the blessing and the curse shaped him. This book is an exploration of how the blessing and curse took effect in his life and work, of how in the end the blessing overpowered the curse, and of the powerful message which is at the heart of Cash's legacy to the world.A native of Dublin, Ireland, Paul Flynn has spent most of his adult life between London, China and Hong Kong. He is an author of short stories for third level students in China. His other books include 'The Arrow of Elisha' and 'Faith and Unity.' He and his wife Choi currently live in Hong Kong.
