Terry Carr recounts the invention of an imaginary black science fiction fan named Carl Brandon, one of the field's most (in)famous hoaxes. In addition to Carl Brandon's complete history, this volume includes his J.D. Salinger parody, "The Cacher of the Rye;" a more current parody by Carl Brandon 2.0, "The Kvetcher on the Racists;" and an essay by Samuel R. Delany, "Racism and Science Fiction." To quote Carr: "In the late fifties, several of the fans of the Bay Area...presented fandom with a new fanwriter who was quickly acclaimed as one of the best writers around and who was, not incidentally, the first prominent fan who was black." Read the book for more of this fascinating tale. All proceeds go to the Carl Brandon Society, which promotes discussions on race at conventions and conferences, and through its support of the Parallax and Kindred literary awards, and the Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Raising Brandon: Creating a Path to Independence for Your Adult Kid with Autism & Special Needs
Raising Brandon has become a manual for parents who have children with autism and special needs. The book informs, educates, and offers hope to a generation of parents struggling for answers. Whether you are just starting out with a newborn and you sense something is wrong, or you have an adult child and you do not know what to do, Raising Brandon will guide you to the answers you have been looking for. This book is filled with practical strategies, answers and solutions that will make life easier for you and your child, no matter his or her age or stage of development. It offers help, hope and inspiration to parents who do not know where to turn. You will be provided with the proven tools to help you work with your child's limitations. Rather than just thinking about what to do, now you can make positive results a reality. Raising Brandon follows Starr's life from the birth of her younger son, Brandon, through his diagnosis of autism, intractable epilepsy, and severe learning disorders. Her goal was to help him live his dream and become an independent adult. "When most people hear the word autism, they associate it with a child," says Starr. "But like Brandon, now thirty-six, our children grow up, and we want them to not only survive in the world, but to live well. As parents, we have much to learn about ourselves in the process." Intended for parents of special needs children as well as care providers, the book's chapters tell a particular story and reveal what the author has discovered. Where the book really shines is where Starr describes in detail how she created innovative ways to empower Brandon when professionals said independence would be impossible for him to achieve. She had to dig deep within, to change and empower herself first in order to help her son succeed. Raising Brandon not only guides parents on how to cope but also how to become a more conscious and evolved human being in the process. "Being conscious is the secret to success," says Starr. "I would have never thought that by helping my son succeed that I would be helping myself at the same time." Brandon has achieved what the professionals believed to be impossible. He has been living in his own apartment, enjoying his independence, for the past twelve years. Although living alone may not be an option for every child, helping one's child to live the best life possible is every parent's dream. "There are thousands of children being diagnosed with autism every day, and those children will grow up. We need to have the resources in place to help them, and as parents, we need to know what to do," adds Starr. There are areas in the book where Starr addresses the common pitfalls, such as shame, secrecy, and denial. She describes how damaging these can be personally, as well as on the marriage. Further, she provides proven tools for releasing yourself and breaking free to create a better life for you and your family. Another message close to Starr's heart is made loud and clear throughout the book. Although her son was diagnosed with epilepsy and learning disorders at the age of nine, it was not until he turned thirty-two that Starr discovered Brandon had a form of autism called Asperger Syndrome. She stresses how early intervention is key, but Starr knows firsthand and shares, "It is never too late to get help for your children There is Hope. Brandon is living proof that anything is possible " Be sure to check out her latest book, I Have Autism...What'll I Do Without You, Mom?

Colonel Brandon is the consummate gentleman: honorable, kind almost to a fault, ever loyal and chivalrous. He's also silent and grave, though. So, what events in his troubled past left him downcast, and how does he finally find the path to a brighter future? In Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen gives us glimpses, but not the complete picture. Now Colonel Brandon tells us his full story in His Own Words. He relates the truth about his early family life and his dear Eliza - his devotion to her and the devastating way she was lost to him forever. He shares with us a poignant tale from his military days in India - about a woman named Rashmi and how she likewise left a permanent mark on his soul. And of course Marianne. What did Brandon think and feel when he first saw her? How did his hopes for her subsequently rise, plummet, and then eventually climb upwards again? After Willoughby's desertion, what finally caused Marianne to see Colonel Brandon in a different light? This is not a variation but a supplement to the original story, chronicled in Brandon's point of view. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the things Jane Austen didn't tell us about a true hero - the very best of men.
Colonel Brandon's Widow and Willoughby: A Jane Austen 'Sense and Sensibility' Variant Sequel
Mrs Brandon, the former Marianne Dashwood, is now a widow, and not yet twenty-five.Her former admirer Willoughby is as unhappily married as ever, and the thought that she is free to marry again drives him to distraction. He has continued in his dissolute lifestyle, which Marianne abhors, while his wife Sophia's life has been poisoned by jealousy of Marianne. Marianne urges him that the only possibility of happiness for Willoughby and his wife is for him to give up his empty pursuit of pleasure - but now the Colonel is gone, Marianne finds that she can no longer push aside thoughts of Willoughby easily herself; she must find some way of occupying her own empty hours.Willoughby retains his rascally charm, which an older and wiser Marianne is determined to resist; Elinor and Edward are as astute as ever, while Sir John and Lady Middleton are as foolish. Mrs Jennings remains determined to marry off all her associates as before, while Sophia Willoughby is even more sour as the wife of the man she wanted, and Willoughby's friends are suitably cynical rakes. This sequel to Jane Austen's 'Sense and Sensibility' strives to emulate some of the light ironic touch of the inimitable style of Jane Austen; it is both funny and sad, and is told as dark comedy.
