NATIONAL BESTSELLER Seven years ago, Amanda Flynn returned from a Honduran camp as the sole survivor of a mysterious new virus known as EDH1. Most of its victims die a gruesome, agonizing death. Others become violent savages. But a precious few, like Amanda, survive ...and change. Amanda escaped from a three-month quarantine because the virus made her different, superior. She can sense things, do things, using only her mind - and these abilities tempt her to test their limits. To harm. Even, though she may resist, to kill. Now, an outbreak of violent deaths in a peaceful Colorado town leads Amanda to suspect that a mutated EDH1 has arrived in America. The virologists she warns want her back, for her immunity may be the only key to its defeat. But no lab can hold her. Not while she wields the power. And now there is another. A man of menace: tall, amoral, relentless. His mission is nothing less than the end of human society - and the birth of a new order forged of his own will. He has the power, too. And, armed with his own store of virulent death, he is coming. Combining the technological authority of THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN with the dark mystery of THE X-FILES, here is a heart-pounding thriller you'll never forget.

Wagner as revolutionary philosopher: a new reading of a trilogy of texts written by the composer in the aftermath of the failed Dresden Uprising Forced into exile to avoid arrest after taking part in the failed Dresden Uprising in 1849, Richard Wagner turned to philosophical writing, producing in rapid succession three theoretical works. In this compelling study, Brian O’Connor traces Wagner’s emergence in these texts as a radical political thinker with a distinctive revolutionary vision. O’Connor describes Wagner’s transformation from publicly engaged commentator to active insurrectionist, showing how revolution’s failure redirected Wagner’s energies toward systematic philosophical reflection. For a crucial period, this theoretical work took precedence over musical composition. At the heart of O’Connor’s account is Wagner’s philosophical imagination. He explores Wagner’s conception of aesthetic spontaneity as a model of individual freedom and his belief in collective artistic creation as the foundation of a liberated society. By situating Wagner’s philosophy within the turbulent political and intellectual context of the time, O’Connor challenges its marginalization in previous accounts, restoring it to its proper place in nineteenth-century political thought. He shows how Wagner reworked ideas drawn from the German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach into an original and provocative form of aesthetic materialism, and examines the interplay between these ideas and Wagner’s dramatic works. O’Connor also offers a straightforward treatment of the unavoidable subject of Wagner’s antisemitism, as expressed in an essay from 1850 about “Jewishness” in music. O’Connor argues that Wagner’s philosophical writing is not only significant in its own right, but it also offers unique and invaluable insights into his music dramas—particularly the composer’s most celebrated work, the Ring Cycle—illuminating their themes, characters, and revolutionary affinities.

At forty-one, husband and father Brian Patrick O'Donoghue feels his youth slipping away... It had been since six years since the newspaper reporter mushed to a last-place finish in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Yearning to challenge himself anew, he enters the Yukon Quest--a far more brutal, 1,000-mile run through mountainous wilds along the Yukon River between Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, and Fairbanks, Alaska. With wry humor and diminishing expectations, O'Donoghue shares the trail with Khan, Hobbes, Scrimshaw, Cyclone, and ten other excitable Alaska huskies, plus a diverse collection of rival racers and an assortment of "Bush rats" met on his way to the finish line. The mushers' strategies, dreams, and disappointments; the antics of their furry athletes; the drama of the race; and the unworldly winter wilderness venue add texture to this amazing personal story of a man and his dogs.

This is a continuation of 'Roland House' from the beginning. It's a modern-day 'Eve' story, where she eats the apple of knowledge and gains complete control over her 'Adam' and all the world besides. In these times there is no 'God' to punish her, but there is a 'Devil'. It's the present day and in a lab in California Nanochips are being developed that can interface with the human brain. A dozen of these untested wafers fall into the hands of a rich, young recluse, Roland, who tries one and discovers its cure-all, mind-enhancing properties. In a glow of health and generosity, he shares them with the few people he meets, a ten-year-old autistic girl and her mother, a cancer patient, a comatose girl and her father, a Japanese tycoon, among others, and his long empty mansion is filled with life and guests. But World War Three begins and one other guest joins this small group of 'illuminati', a recipient of a faulty wafer, a first test case, Claire, with exponentially expanded powers of mind over everything and everyone, except love. So begin the adventures of this group of mental samurai to survive and help others survive in a dizzying spin of events. States are not far behind to mass produce chips and to discover the integration of minds and computers leads to the disintegration of identity. Plans are hatched to dose and subjugate everyone. Claire, well ahead of the curve, steps up to the plate to stop this, to preserve human dignity. The revolution begins, and it ends, along with the resolution of her own demons, on these pages. (Note: This volume comprises both 'Roland House' and 'Roland House II', the complete story)

Why Superman Doesn't Take Over The World

Why Superman Doesn't Take Over The World

J. Brian O’Roark

Why do heroes fight each other? Why do villains keep trying even though they almost never win? Why don't heroes simply take over the world? Economics and comics may seem to be a world apart. But in the hands of economics professor and comic book hero aficionado Brian O’Roark, the two form a powerful alliance. With brilliant deadpan enthusiasm he shows how the travails of superheroes can explain the building blocks of economics, and how economics explains the mysteries of superhero behavior. Spider-Man's existential doubts revolve around opportunity costs; Wonder Woman doesn't have a sidekick because she has a comparative advantage; game theory sheds light on the battle between Captain America and Iron Man; the Joker keeps committing crimes because of the Peltzman effect; and utility curves help us decide who is the greatest superhero of all. Why Superman Doesn't Take Over the World probes the motivations of our favorite heroes, and reveals that the characters in the comics may have powers we dont, but they are still beholden to the laws of economics.

Bringing together the analysis of a diverse team of social scientists, this book proposes a new approach to environmental problems. Cutting through the fragmented perspectives on water crises, it seeks to shift the analytic perspectives on water policy by looking at the social logics behind environmental issues. Most importantly, it analyzes the dynamic influences on water management, as well as the social and institutional forces that orient water and conservation policies. The first work of its kind, The Field of Water Policy: Power and Scarcity in the American Southwest brings the tools of Pierre Bourdieu’s field sociology to bear on a moment of environmental crisis, with a study of the logics of water policy in the American Southwest, a region that allows us to see the contest over the management of scarce resources in a context of lasting drought. As such, it will appeal to scholars in the social and political sciences with interests in the environment and the management of natural resources.

Austerity Ireland

Austerity Ireland

Pluto Press

Ireland has been marketed as the poster boy of EU austerity. EU elites and neoliberal commentators claim that the country's ability to suffer economic pain will attract investors and generate a recovery. In Austerity Ireland, Kieran Allen challenges this official image and argues that the Irish state's response to the crash is typical of the Eurozone countries, serving to protect the economic privilege of the powerful, to the detriment of the middle and working classes. Looking at the various ways we could consider this austerity period a failure, including transforming Ireland into a tax haven and contributing to serious levels of unemployment, Allen reveals the extent of Ireland's current socio-economic and political malaise, suggesting that it may have created furtile ground for a leftist resurgence.
