The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Charles Wheeler - Witness to the Twentieth Century
Charles Wheeler, the BBC's longest-serving foreign correspondent, was one of Britain's greatest news reporters. For more than four decades, he reported for radio and television from most of the world's trouble spots. Present at many of the key episodes of the twentieth century, he had - as a BBC manager noted after the shooting of George Wallace, Presidential candidate and Governor of Alabama, on 15 May 1972, 'a knack of being in the right place at the right time'. It was typical of Charles that he ran towards the sound of the gunshot while the crowd was running in the opposite direction.Wheeler's investigative skill and sense of judgement made him one of the most authoritative reporters of his generation. But what was it like to have been witness to the events that shaped our modern world? In this book - part memoir, part history, part reflection - his daughter, Shirin Wheeler, examines her father's journalistic legacy and brings her personal knowledge to bear on the project. She will tell the story of her father: a patient listener and forensic interrogator who was driven by curiosity and passion to report and expose injustice, and above all to give a voice to people ignored or unheard by many.

Whoever is fascinated by the figure of Charles de Foucauld (1858-1916) gets to know Christ through him. Because following Jesus was the main goal of Brother Charles' life, in Nazareth's working life, in the proclamation of the gospel. To be bread and to share with others. To give oneself as broken bread. This study is a sequel to If You Exist (Amazon, 2019, first edited by Altiora, Belgium in 1987). Brother Charles' time and spirituality are examined from the perspective of the Eucharist. What were the typical characteristics of the Eucharistic devotion of Foucauld's time? Against this background, how can we distinguish his personal accents? The Eucharist is the beginning and the centre of Foucault's spirituality. Through this focus we get to know his person better, in search of how believers of this time try to find God. Charles de Foucauld (1858-1916), who called himself Brother Charles of Jesus, was beatified on November 13, 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI. He is an example for many who want to live their faith in service. As a missionary in Algeria, he showed that a warm proximity brings people together, beyond the boundaries of religions and cultures.Jan Van Raemdonck ( 1957) is a Belgian priest, theologian and historian. He is a member of the Priest Fraternities of Charles de Foucauld and parish priest in Zele, East Flanders.

Two Letters to Sir Charles Forbes

Two Letters to Sir Charles Forbes

James Silk Buckingham

Originally published between 1824 and 1853, these four pieces by James Silk Buckingham (1786–1855) illuminate the concerns of a broad-minded traveller and the problems of governing an empire. A newspaperman, social reformer and fierce critic of the East India Company, Buckingham published the Calcutta Journal until his expulsion from India in 1823 for attacking vested interests. The first and second pieces reissued here are his open letters, written anonymously in 1824, to the MP Sir Charles Forbes regarding press freedom and the expulsion, without trial, of himself and another editor. These are followed by an 1830 account of the reception of his public lecture tour on the East India Company's monopoly, and an 1853 outline for the future government of India. Together, these polemical texts provide great insight into contemporary colonial debates surrounding British rule in India.
