Kit Carson is a shipbuilding engineer in his father's shipyard in Scotland. He was in charge of designing a new boiler for a steamship under contract to a foreign government. The government purchased one from Kit's company and one from a competitor. The fastest ship will get a contract for more. One design element Kit wanted to include was denied by management. But, in a speed test, the competing ship got up to speed faster and sailed faster, as well. Kit is accused, wrongly, of selling his plans to the competitor. Management, needing a scapegoat, fires him. He emigrates to Canada and gets an engineering job the railroad. His first, major test is a doozy, and even Kit does not know whether his design will work. Never fear, however: there is a romance tripping its way through the pages.
