Almost everyone in Carterville is related either by blood or by marriage. The sheriff is corrupt and sexually insatiable. Abby Jenkins has just escaped her abusive husband and moved to Carterville with her two teenage daughters Tracy and Tabatha. She is in her mid-to-late thirties and broke. Tabatha, also known as Tabby, works at Bea's Burger Joint to help with the family finances. Its owner Bea Carter is a schizophrenic lesbian with wiry hair and a heavyset build. Bea's cousins are Sheriff Bubba, Deputy Daryl and Judge Bean. Many in the town are related in one way or another. Most of its residents owe their livelihood to the Carters, so are inclined to go along with the family's occasional deviancy, especially where newcomers and people passing through are concerned.
