Conrad's Shadow

Conrad's Shadow

Nidesh Lawtoo

Michigan State University Press
2016
nidottu
Western thought has often dismissed shadows as fictional, but what if fictions reveal original truths? Drawing on an anti-Platonic tradition in critical theory, Lawtoo adopts ethical, anthropological, and philosophical lenses to offer new readings of Joseph Conrad’s novels and the postcolonial and cinematic works that respond to his oeuvre. He argues that Conrad’s fascination with doubles urges readers to reflect on the two sides of mimesis: one side is dark and pathological, and involves the escalation of violence, contagious epidemics, and catastrophic storms; the other side is luminous and therapeutic, and promotes communal survival, postcolonial reconciliation, and plastic adaptations to changing environments. Once joined, the two sides reveal Conrad as an author whose Janus-faced fictions are powerfully relevant to our contemporary world of global violence and environmental crisis.

Conrad Weiser (1696-1760) was a Pennsylvania German pioneer, interpreter, and representative of the colonies to the Indians. Weiser was one of the most important figures in North America during the colonial period. Without Weiser's knowledge of native languages and customs and his deft handling of negotiations on behalf of the Penns and other royal governors, the long peace between the proprietors and the natives would have been short-lived. This second revised edition of Arthur Graeff's 1945 biography contains copious footnotes, numerous pictures, and a thorough index missing from the first edition.

If one man could be said to exemplify in his character the promise of America's greatness, that man was Conrad Weiser, Pennsylvania frontiersman of the Colonial period. This biography of one of the key figures in our national history reveals a personality of almost legendary nobility and charm, whose democratic principles actually helped shape the United States of America. A man of many talents and interests--farmer, soldier, churchman, political leader, father of a large family--Weiser is significant chiefly as the great champion and friend of the Indians of the Six Nations during the fateful early days of the country. Servicing as official interpreter and mediator between them and the English authorities, he brought harmony between the two factions time and again. He was responsible for keeping the important Iroquois tribes neutral during the French and Indian War.

Captain Conrad's Safety Tips!

Conrad M Gonzales

Halo Publishing International

From 1994 to 2003, Mr. Gonzales wrote these safety poems/songs for his children. They cover safety issues of all kinds, from fire safety, to bicycle and train safety, and even safety in the kitchen. He decided to publish these songs as poems so educators, such as teachers, parents, grandparents, and first responders, can read them to children, have fun teaching these rules...and save lives at the same time. Each poem has a unique message that will, hopefully, make a difference. If one child learns not to play with matches or cigarette lighters, or one parent installs a smoke alarm, that's one less call for firefighters, which means their lives are saved, too, and they can go home to their families.

Life had been simple and good for Conrad; enforce the law, break a few heads, and enjoy the local red-light district. Now, within a few days, a rescued girl of questionable virtue was filling his bed and complicating his life; those off-world bastards, the Pipers, were arming the western cannibals and Connie was back to the bad old days of military campaigning, long nights on cold ground, long hours in the saddle, all mixed with episodes of hard fighting, heavy killing, and no quarter requested or given.

Conrad Kain is a titan amongst climbers in Canada and is well-known in mountaineering circles all over the world. His letters to Amelie Malek-a life-long friend-offer a candid view into the deepest thoughts of the Austrian mountain guide, and are a perfect complement to his autobiography, Where the Clouds Can Go. The 144 letters provide a unique and personal view of what it meant to immigrate to Canada in the early part of the twentieth century. Kain's letters are ordered chronologically with annotations, keeping the sections in English untouched, while those in German have been carefully translated. Historians and mountain culture enthusiasts worldwide will appreciate Kain's genius for description, his passion for nature, his opinions, and his musings about his life. Foreword by Chic Scott. Conrad's Marlow

Conrad's Marlow

Paul Wake

Manchester University Press

Variously described as ‘the average pilgrim’, a ‘wanderer’, and ‘a Buddha preaching in European clothes’, Charlie Marlow is the voice behind Joseph Conrad’s Youth (1898), Heart of Darkness (1899), Lord Jim (1900) and Chance (1912). Newly available in paperback, Conrad’s Marlow offers a comprehensive account and critical analysis of one of Conrad’s most celebrated creations, asking both who and what is Marlow: a character or a narrator, a biographer or an autobiographical screen, a messenger or an interpreter, a bearer of truth or a misguided liar?Reading Conrad’s fiction alongside the work of Walter Benjamin, Maurice Blanchot, Jacques Derrida and Martin Heidegger, and offering an investigation into the connection between narrative and death, this book argues that Marlow’s essence is located in his liminality – in his constantly shifting position – and that the emergence of meaning in his stories is at all points bound up with the process of his storytelling.
Conrad Monk and the Great Heathen Army
Conrad is a monk, but he has become a monk through trickery and against his will. So, it is fair to say that his heart isn't really in it. Conrad is also clever, charming, entirely self-serving, self-absorbed and almost completely without scruple - but in Anglo-Saxon England, those are very helpful attributes to have.
