This biography of ice cream entrepreneur Ed. F. Kruse (1928–2015) looks back on a life devoted to family, community, and building one of the most successful businesses in Texas. Starting at Blue Bell Creameries at the age of thirteen, Kruse held every position imaginable at the company, eventually becoming president and chief executive officer. Under his guidance, Blue Bell grew from a creamery serving the small communities around Brenham, Texas, to a nationally recognized brand. Dorothy MacInerney takes readers behind the scenes at the “little creamery in Brenham.” She reveals the hard work, persistence, and dedication that went into building not only Blue Bell Creameries, but also Kruse’s reputation as a tireless worker on behalf of the place where he was born and raised, the people whom he gathered around him at his company, and the home he so clearly treasured above everything else. This is an authentic Texas success story of a man and his guiding principles—and the generosity that compelled him to share his success with others. After retiring, the late Kruse retained a seat on the board of directors until 2015, giving him seventy-five years of experience at Blue Bell Creameries.

Like the boxer Jack Dempsey, Ed Don George, the wrestler, was also called upon to be a hand-to-hand combat instructor during the 2nd World War. In Ed Don George's case it was for the U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School at the University of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Through a series of articles which he wrote on the subject as well as accompanying photographs, this book attempts to reintroduce the man and his patriotic efforts to assist in the preparation of the young cadets of the Navy Pre-Flight school for that conflict.

For generations, Ed Wood has been known as “the worst director of all time.” This sympathetic critical study repositions the director of Plan 9 from Outer Space as a maverick independent whose work challenges the boundary between “bad” and “good.” In 1978, Edward D. Wood, Jr. died aged fifty-four, days after being evicted from his home. Two years later, he was rescued from obscurity when he was voted “Worst Director of All Time.” By the time Tim Burton’s biopic Ed Wood was released in 1994, Wood’s low-budget films, including Plan 9 from Outer Space, Glen or Glenda, and Bride of the Monster, had become entrenched as “so bad they’re good” anti-classics. That was then. In the years since, the rediscovery of lost and neglected films has enriched Wood’s legacy, while new generations of viewers have grown more sympathetic to his eccentric style and offbeat take on gender and sexuality. Ed Wood: Made in Hollywood USA is a critical study that takes Wood seriously, positioning him as a true independent whose work complicates the barrier between “bad” and “good.” Will Sloan follows Wood’s career on the margins of Hollywood, from his cult films with Bela Lugosi to his eventual fate in pornography, locating the artistic personality that unites his subterranean oeuvre. Sloan situates Wood’s films in their cultural context, showing how he infused old styles and genres with his contemporary concerns; how his freewheeling approach to film grammar blurred the line between the grindhouse and the avant-garde; how his bringing together of faded stars, novelty celebrities, and showbiz amateurs created evocative Hollywood dreamscapes; and how his art explored cross-dressing and gender fluidity when these subjects were taboo. It also charts Wood’s place in the “bad movie” cult, from The Golden Turkey Awards to Mystery Science Theater 3000 and beyond. Marking the centennial of Wood’s birth, Ed Wood: Made in Hollywood USA assesses the full scope of Wood’s career, considering how radical ideas grow on the fringes and interrogating the ideology of “bad.” This is a timely intervention in the politics of taste, and a fond salute to an independent spirit whose films tell us so much about our world.

What the group did not foresee, however, was the instant and intense connection made between Ed and Julia, the granddaughter of one of the groups members. Not only did the group find a worthy competitor to showcase the clubs but Ed finds his true love and friends that become the family he had been longing for.The small group proceeds with their plans and they all work tirelessly to achieve the goal. Ed Adams, with his wife Julia, was working his way through the donor's party following his being the featured pianist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic opener for the 2022 season. Congratulations and kudos were being accepted by Ed for his exceptionally fine playing of Rachmaninoff's Concerto Number 2 and the very difficult Concerto Number 3.He spotted a piano in one corner of the room and steered Julia in that direction seeking some space to take a break from the admiring attendees. Next to the piano was an elderly lady, in a wheelchair, seeming to be asleep. Julia knelt down to clasp her hands just as her eyes opened. Seeing Ed she said, "Edward Adams, my goodness you can certainly play Rachmaninoff. I knew him, you know."Robert Johnson and Sandra Williams were trying to get close enough to Ed to introduce themselves and just behind them stood a short man who was discretely observing this activity. The three waiting could clearly hear what Wilma Herman had just said and it was this that set-in motion what was to become a great adventure for all of them and would result in extraordinary gifts to the lovers of classical music. The short man, known only as John, with five partners had developed the means to travel back in time. Robert Johnson had been their first traveler and one of his trips had been to visit Rachmaninoff shortly before his death in 1943.It was this connection and Wilma saying, "I knew him, you know." that had John ready to plan and execute the next trip back in time. Ed Adams Touches The Stars tells the story of this trip and also of family, love, friendship, talent and respect that made it possible.

A LONG-OUT-OF-PRINT CLASIC BY A MASTER OF UNDERGROUND COMICSIn the late 1980s, the idiosyncratic Chester Brown (author of the muchlauded Paying for It and Louis Riel) began writing the cult classic comic book series Yummy Fur. Within its pages, he serialized the groundbreaking Ed the Happy Clown, revealing a macabre universe of parallel dimensions. Thanks to its wholly original yet disturbing story lines, Ed set the stage for Brown to become a world-renowned cartoonist. Ed the Happy Clown is a hallucinatory tale that functions simultaneously as a dark roller-coaster ride of criminal activity and a scathing condemnation of religious and political charlatanism. As the world around him devolves into madness, the eponymous Ed escapes variously from a jealous boyfriend, sewer monsters, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and a janitor with a Jesus complex. Brown leaves us wondering, with every twist of the plot, just how Ed will get out of this scrape. The intimate, tangled world of Ed the Happy Clown is definitively presented here, repackaged with a new foreword by the author and an extensive notes section, and is, like every Brown book, astonishingly perceptive about the zeitgeist of its time.
