Since she was young, Elisabeth Elliot had been intrigued by missionaries who gave up so much to tell others about God's love. With a passion to translate the Bible into new languages, she followed God's call to work among tribes in Ecuador, including the Waorani (Auca), who had killed her husband and four others. Elisabeth kept a detailed journal of her life and missionary service. She returned to the United States after many years in South America, becoming one of the most influential Christian women of our time. A prolific author, speaker, and radio host, she passes on a message of joyful surrender to the world. (1926-2015)
Dutch Fairy Tales for Young Folks by William Elliot Griffis, Fiction, Fairy Tales & Folklore - Country & Ethnic
Long ago, in Dutch Fairy Land, there lived a family of mere or lake folks dwelling not far from the sea. Their home was a great pool of water, half salt and half fresh -- for it lay around an island near the mouth of a river. Swimming out in the salt water, the mermaids would go in quest of pearls, coral, ambergris and other pretty things. These they would bring to their queen, or with them richly adorn themselves. Thus the Mermaid Queen and her maidens made a court of beauty -- famed wherever mermaids and merrymen lived. And they often talked of human maids. "How funny it must be to wear clothes " said one. "Well, I should like to be a real woman for a while, just to try it, and see how it feels to walk on legs," said another, rather demurely -- as if afraid the other mermaids might not like her remark. Out rang a lusty chorus, "No No Horrible What an idea Who wouldn't be a mermaid?"

Set against the turbulent backdrop of the UK miners’ strike (1984–5), Billy Elliot (2000) follows eleven-year-old Billy as he pursues his dream of becoming a ballet dancer. Hailed for its heartfelt portrayal of working class life and its powerful challenge to gender stereotypes, Stephen Daldry’s film is recognised today as a significant contribution to the tradition of British social-realist cinema.James Leggott’s insightful study explores the creative forces behind Billy Elliot’s development, drawing from interviews with many of the core production team, such as the screenwriter Lee Hall, the choreographer Peter Darling and the composer Stephen Warbeck. Leggott identifies influences from the worlds of theatre, dance, photography and music, including inspirations specific to the North East of England, and calls attention to the film’s innate musicality in its bold and playful combinations of soundtrack and action, with songs by Marc Bolan and T. Rex, The Clash and The Jam among others. Tracing Billy Elliot’s global impact and its remarkable afterlife as a hit stage production, Leggott makes a case for the film’s enduring significance in British cinema history.
George Elliot - The Lifted Veil: "The time of my end approaches''
Mary Anne Evans was born on 22nd November 1819 at Nuneaton in Warwickshire, England, As a child she was a committed reader and brimmed with intelligence. Her father felt that her lack of physical beauty might not bring her the best selection of suitors in marriage and therefore thought a good education, rarely afforded to women at the time, might be the best path for her. From the age of five to nine, she boarded with her sister at Miss Latham's school in Attleborough, and then Mrs. Wallington's school in Nuneaton, until she was thirteen, and it was to be Miss Franklin's school in Coventry until she was sixteen. In 1835 her mother died and she returned home to keep house for her father and her siblings, and with it the cessation of her formal education. Over the next decade she nurtured her literary ambitions but doubts on religious faith brought tensions with her father who was not enamored at the free-willed liberals she was associating with. Despite this her first major literary work was completing an English translation of Strauss's 'The Life of Jesus' in 1846. Her father died in 1849 and Eliot was able to begin a new life. After a few months in Geneva she moved to London to work at the Westminster Review where she published many articles and essays. In 1851 Mary Anne or Marian, as she liked to be called, met George Henry Lewes, and in 1854 they moved in together; a somewhat scandalous situation as he was already married. Her view on literature had taken some time to coalesce but with the publication of parts of 'Scenes From A Clerical Life' in 1858 she knew she wanted to be a novelist. Under the pseudonym of George Eliot that we know so well 'Adam Bede' was published in 1859 followed by her other great novels; 'Mill on the Floss', 'Silas Marner' and 'Middlemarch'. Her talents also extended to both small canons of poetry and short stories. 'The Lifted Veil' is a both a beautiful story and typical of Eliot's formidable powers of writing. George Eliot died on 22nd December 1880 at Chelsea in London. She was 61. She is buried at Highgate Cemetery.
