Hobbes. By: Leslie Stephen, and Frederic William Maitland (28 May 1850 - 19 December 1906) was an English historian and lawyer who
Thomas Hobbes ( 5 April 1588 - 4 December 1679), in some older texts Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury, was an English philosopher who is considered one of the founders of modern political philosophy.Hobbes is best known for his 1651 book Leviathan, which established the social contract theory that has served as the foundation for most later Western political philosophy. In addition to political philosophy, Hobbes also contributed to a diverse array of other fields, including history, geometry, the physics of gases, theology, ethics, and general philosophy. Though on rational grounds a champion of absolutism for the sovereign, Hobbes also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought: the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order (which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state); the view that all legitimate political power must be "representative" and based on the consent of the people; and a liberal interpretation of law which leaves people free to do whatever the law does not explicitly forbid. His understanding of humans as being matter and motion, obeying the same physical laws as other matter and motion, remains influential; and his account of human nature as self-interested cooperation, and of political communities as being based upon a "social contract" remains one of the major topics of political philosophy. Frederic William Maitland, FBA (28 May 1850 - 19 December 1906) was an English historian and lawyer who is generally regarded as the modern father of English legal history.Maitland was born at 53 Guilford Street, London, the only son of John Gorham Maitland (1818-1863) and of Emma, daughter of John Frederic Daniell. His grandfather was Samuel Roffey Maitland (1792-1866). He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, being bracketed at the head of the moral sciences tripos of 1872, and winning the Whewell scholarship for international law.He was a Cambridge Apostle and President of the Cambridge Union.......... Sir Leslie Stephen KCB (28 November 1832 - 22 February 1904) was an English author, critic, historian, biographer, and mountaineer, and father of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell.Stephen was born at Kensington Gore in London, and son of Sir James Stephen and Lady Jane Catherine (n e Venn) Stephen. His father was Colonial Undersecretary of State and a noted abolitionist. He was the fourth of five children, his siblings including James Fitzjames Stephen (1829-1894) and Caroline Emilia Stephen (1834-1909). His family had belonged to the Clapham Sect, the early 19th century group of mainly evangelical Christian social reformers. At his father's house he saw a good deal of the Macaulays, James Spedding, Sir Henry Taylor and Nassau Senior. After studying at Eton College, King's College London and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. (20th wrangler) in 1854 and M.A. in 1857, Stephen remained for several years a fellow and tutor of his college. He recounted some of his experiences in a chapter in his Life of Fawcett as well as in some less formal Sketches from Cambridge: By a Don (1865). These sketches were reprinted from the Pall Mall Gazette, to the proprietor of which, George Murray Smith, he had been introduced by his brother. MARRIAGE: The family connections included that of William Makepeace Thackeray. His brother, Fitzjames had been a friend of Thackeray's and assisted in the disposition of his estate when he died in 1863. His sister Caroline met Thackeray's daughters, Anny (1837-1919) and Minny (Harriet Marian Thackeray 1840-1875) when they were mutual guests of Julia Margaret Cameron (of whom, see later)....

Frederic Clemson Howe (November 21, 1867 - August 3, 1940) was a member of the Ohio Senate, a dedicated yet flexible Georgist, Commissioner of Immigration of the Port of New York, and published author. He was also president of the League for Small and Subject Nationalities. He received a bachelor's degree from Allegheny College in 1889 and a Ph.D from Johns Hopkins University in 1892. In 1901, he was elected to Cleveland City Council, Ohio as a Republican. During his tenure, he became a key advisor to Tom L. Johnson, mayor of Cleveland at that time. He ran for reelection as an independent, but lost. In 1904, he married Marie Jenney. He studied law at Miami University in Ohio. In 1919, Howe was targeted during a bombing spree, but was unharmed. On 27 July 1933, George N. Peek, head of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration appointed Howe as the head of the Consumers' Counsel. Howe was associated with other left-wing members of the Roosevelt administration. Rexford Tugwell claimed that Howe was "the subject of vitriolic attacks by the business interests" and was "pictured as a Red". 5] Chester R. Davis now decided to get rid of Howe. He later recalled: "Fred Howe was a man of high ideals and very practical sense. He was the 'turn the other cheek' type. He was a well-meaning man who permitted his organization to be loaded down with a group of people who were more concerned with stirring up discontent than they were with achieving the objectives of the act." Howe is buried in Meadville, Pennsylvania.

In France, in the last century, it was not easy to be a frog. Quite apart from the general Gallic urge to consume the legs of you and your friends, there existed a foul group called the Bone Suckers who actively hunted wild frogs and fed them up while devising cruel ways to enlarge those juicy legs. Then they ate you. There were also, of course, the frog circuses, which were all both fiercely competitive and also always on the lookout for new performers - they were not a particularly loveable bunch either. So you needed to be permanently on the alert, as enemies were never too far away. Imagine just how much worse yet your life might be if you had other personal problems too Imagine that you were frightened of water That would never happen, would it? To a frog? Well, you know, it isn't impossible. Bone Suckers, frog circuses and water could make life pretty tricky for a 20th century frog.

“From this period, the intimacy between the Families of Fitzroy, Drummond, and Falknor daily increased, till at length it grew to such a pitch, that they did not scruple to kick one another out of the window on the slightest provocation.”Jane Austen’s juvenilia are widely admired both for their auguries of her future greatness and for the spirit of madcap surrealism that marks them out from her other work. Written when Austen was still an adolescent, Frederic and Elfrida is a witty and inventive parody that brilliantly sends up the conventions of romantic fiction.

Chopin remembered Vienna as the city where he had made an instant success with his music, so when, after years at home in Warsaw, he returned to Vienna he was heartsick to find only a cool welcome awaiting him. Vienna wanted to dance and sing and forget war...and Poland was on the brink of war. In Paris, however, Chopin found himself warmly welcomed; his concerts became the vogue; his days were crowded with both gayety and the work he loved. Years passed and the world hailed his greatest compositions. Then ill health began making inroads on his time, and he went to Majorca, England, Scotland, seeking relief. However, time was running out, and, at the peak of his career, the great composer and pianist died in Paris, the city he loved. Thus, simply, yet with drama is completed this excellent two-volume biography of one of the world's greatest artists.
