Two children get extremely excited about a circus arriving in the railway sidings opposite their homes in its own custom-built train. Unfortunately they are not the only ones interested in this event, as a gang of thieves are planning to use the circus, and one of its performers, as cover for a major robbery. The children, and three more of their friends from primary school, several times come face to face with the robbers. In one encounter one of the friends comes within seconds of losing his life. At their final meeting before moving to a senior school, they discover that it is the robber’s intention to commit a robbery in the centre of town. First they think it is going to be a bank robbery but then realise it is jewels the thieves are after. Through a daring plan it is actually the children who end up with the proceeds of this theft. The villains are not happy about this and, just as the children are trying to hand the jewels over to the police, they accost them. Will the children be able to escape and help capture the culprits?

In Gary Hume: The Wonky Wheel, the renowned British artist updates the genre of history painting for the twenty-first century. With the 18 paintings and three sculptures gathered in this volume--all new and never before published--Hume unveils colorful abstractions rooted in contemporary conflict and the fragility of human life. If these most recent works are, as Hume himself stresses, a form of history painting--representations of a series of "pregnant moments" connected to one of the great historical dramas of our time--Hume short-circuits this notion by rendering their historical scenes all but invisible, thus apparently declaring his disinterest in any narrative whatsoever. Nonetheless, these moments form the building blocks of the work. History’s forward progress is constant, Hume’s art proposes, but it is always wonky.
This essay, discussing a two-part installation at Galerie des Archives in Paris by the internationally celebrated artist, Gary Hill, explores the enigmatic nature of the work of art as an object and of objects in general, as such issues pertain to Hill's work and these installations in particular. The text is by two well-known poet/artists who have a long history of association and collaboration with Gary Hill. It does mean that one must discover an appropriate mode of entry which is more than informational. This can involve radical reorientation, as in the case of HanD HearD, which directly (but non-coercively) introduces us to the posture of awareness appropriate to our participation in the piece.Considering more particularly the piece HanD HearD, we discover that its way of being a text imposes nothing on the mind, yet it offers an image (a hand in front of a person's face) as a possible posture of awareness. “Winter is always too long. Put the plow on the truck, stay warm, take your meds. Get through it any way you can. Spring is mud. Summer, the stunning but brief reward. Then the fall into winter again.” New Jersey born photographer Gary Briechle (born 1955) has forged many long-term relationships with the people he has photographed since moving to Maine nearly 20 years ago. This gives his work a peculiar intimacy, as if the pictures were made by a family member. He lives and works in midcoast Maine and doesn’t see a need to travel to make photographs: “Most everything that inspires me is within a few miles of my home. Sometimes I think that Maine is like my foster family; I’m not really entirely comfortable and will probably never feel completely settled, but Maine keeps feeding me.”
