Beyond Redistribution

Beyond Redistribution

Since the publication of John Rawls's A Theory of Justice in 1971, political philosophers in the English-speaking world have shared a broad consensus that social justice should be understood as a matter of fair distribution of social resources. Many contemporary political philosophers disagree sharply about what would count as a fair distribution of social resources, yet agree that if social resources were to be distributed fairly, then social justice would exist. In Beyond Redistribution, Kevin M. Graham argues that political theories operating on a distributive understanding of social justice fail to address adequately certain forms of social injustice related to race. Graham argues that political philosophy could understand race-related injustice more fully by shifting its focus away from distributive inequities between whites and nonwhites and toward white supremacy, the unfair power relationships that allow whites to dominate and oppress nonwhites. Beyond Redistribution offers a careful, detailed critique of the positions of leading contemporary liberal political philosophers on race-related issues of social justice. Graham's analysis of the racial politics of police violence and public education in Omaha, Nebraska, vividly illustrates why the search for racial justice in the United States must move beyond redistribution.

"Modernizing Schools: People, Learning and Organisations" poses four key questions: What are the antecedents of the current waves of modernization and what directions is it taking in England and internationally? Does workforce modernization, in whatever form, offer meaningful ways forward for the teaching profession in England and other countries? How is the leadership of change to take place with respect to educational modernization in England and elsewhere? What alternative approaches to remodelling might be developed with regard to the workforce labour market in England and in other national contexts? In exploring these questions, this book draws upon research evidence and accounts of remodelling from researchers, headteachers, governors, teachers, students and parents. It concentrates on the challenge of the modernization of education both in the UK and internationally, and considers its underpinning concepts and policies, providing examples of workforce remodelling and the management of this process in schools. How resources are used and the effects of remodelling practice on different stakeholders are also examined - together with a discussion of how we might engage it in schools and more widely in the public sector.

Expert practitioners combine the traditional basic techniques of membrane isolation and analysis with modern advances in molecular biology, immunology, and clinical sciences to devise analytical techniques that are successful for expert and novice alike. The techniques are used in the isolation and compositional analysis of membranes and address animal, plant, and microbial cells. The topics covered in this first volume include the isolation of subcellular fractions, centrifugation, the extraction and quantitation of lipids, the separation and analysis of proteins, and the isolation and characterization of glycosylated molecules, glycoproteins, proteoglycans, and glycolipids.
The Walking Miracle: How the 'Shoreline Running Man' Overcame the Injury that Stopped Him from Running
It happened on Mother's Day. While on his daily run, Lamont Thomas, the "Shoreline Running Man," mistimed his step and tripped over a parking block in the QFC parking lot. At first, he laughed, thinking it was just another fall. But soon he realized that this one was different. He couldn't get up. After EMS arrived, he learned that he had broken the femur badly in his one good leg. This book tells the story of Lamont's journey to overcome the pain and challenges of another crippling injury.

Looseleaf for Children Moving: A Reflective Approach to Teaching Physical Education

Children Moving, introduces a process of teaching that provides a background for adapting, adjusting, and modifying lessons so they are interesting and worthwhile for all children - from the lowest to the highest skill and fitness levels. The ultimate goal is to guide youngsters in the process of becoming physically active for a lifetime. Rather than simply describing games and activities, Children Moving emphasizes the importance of children learning to move by focusing on developmentally appropriate skill themes that are used in virtually all sports and physical activities. The intended result is children becoming skillful movers and eager participants in physical activity.

There have been many important advances in our understanding of biological membrane structure and function over the last decade. Much of this progress has been driven by the development of new techniques for studying membrane components and their interactions. Tradition ally, the investigation of membranes has largely occurred within the domains of biochemistry, physical chemistry, and cell biology; but many of the most significant advances have resulted from an expansion into other disciplines, such as molecular biology, immunology, and the clinical sciences. In these two volumes we have attempted to bring together some of these techniques—to combine the old and the new. Biomembrane Protocols: II. Architecture and Function is concerned exclusively with the architecture and activities of membranes, whereas the companion volume, Biomembrane Protocols: I. Isolation and Analysis, deals with their isolation and compositional analysis. The aim of each chapter is to provide detailed technical and meth odological information that will allow the reader to perform the tech nique successfully, without the need to consult other texts. Detailed reviews of membrane structure and function are not included, except where they are relevant to the choice or efficacy of a particular proce dure. In addition to Materials and Methods sections, each chapter has a Notes section that explains the reasons for taking certain steps and pro vides practical tips for applying the techniques to other systems.
On Tragedy and Transcendence

From the time of Plato's proposed expulsion of the poets, tragedy has repeatedly proposed a challenge to philosophical and theological certainties. This is apparent already in early Christianity amongst leading figures during the patristic age. But this raises the question: Why was the theme of tragedy still accepted and deployed throughout the history of Christianity nevertheless? Is this merely an accident or is there something more substantial at play? Can Christian theology take the tragic seriously? Must Christianity ultimately deny the tragic to be coherent, or might it be able to sustain its negativity? Some like George Steiner, David Bentley Hart, and John Milbank have doubts about such a coherency, but others think differently. This book aims to examine this debate, laying out the lines of disagreement and continuing tensions. Through a critical examination of the work of Donald MacKinnon and the eminent Christian thinker Rowan Williams, the book aims to show that there is a path for reconciling the claims of Christian orthodoxy and the experience of tragedy, one that is able to maintain a metaphysical foundation for both real transcendence and unfolding historicity, without denying either.
