A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR - The riveting story of the conflict over same-sex marriage in the United States--the most significant civil rights breakthrough of the new millennium Full of intimate details, battling personalities, heated court cases, public persuasion." --John Williams, The New York TimesOn June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that state bans on gay marriage were unconstitutional, making same-sex unions legal across the United States. But the road to that momentous decision was much longer than many know. In this definitive account, Sasha Issenberg vividly guides us through same-sex marriage's unexpected path from the unimaginable to the inevitable. It is a story that begins in Hawaii in 1990, when a rivalry among local activists triggered a sequence of events that forced the state to justify excluding gay couples from marriage. In the White House, one president signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which elevated the matter to a national issue, and his successor tried to write it into the Constitution. Over twenty-five years, the debate played out across the country, from the first legal same-sex weddings in Massachusetts to the epic face-off over California's Proposition 8 and, finally, to the landmark Supreme Court decisions of United States v. Windsor and Obergefell v. Hodges. From churches to hedge funds, no corner of American life went untouched. This richly detailed narrative follows the coast-to-coast conflict through courtrooms and war rooms, bedrooms and boardrooms, to shed light on every aspect of a political and legal controversy that divided Americans like no other. Following a cast of characters that includes those who sought their own right to wed, those who fought to protect the traditional definition of marriage, and those who changed their minds about it, The Engagement is certain to become a seminal book on the modern culture wars.
Tropical Algebraic Geometry

This book is based on the lectures given at the Oberwolfach Seminar on Tropical Algebraic Geometry in October 2004. Tropical Geometry ?rst appeared as a subject of its own in 2002, while its roots can be traced back at least to Bergman’s work [1] on logarithmic limit sets. Tropical Geometry is now a rapidly developing area of mathematics. It is int- twined with algebraic and symplectic geometry, geometric combinatorics, in- grablesystems, and statistical physics. Tropical Geometry can be viewed as a sort of algebraic geometry with the underlying algebra based on the so-called tropical numbers. The tropicalnumbers (the term “tropical” comesfrom computer science and commemorates Brazil, in particular a contribution of the Brazilian school to the language recognition problem) are the real numbers enhanced with negative in?nity and equipped with two arithmetic operations called tropical addition and tropical multiplication. The tropical addition is the operation of taking the m- imum. The tropical multiplication is the conventional addition. These operations are commutative, associative and satisfy the distribution law. It turns out that such tropical algebra describes some meaningful geometric objects, namely, the Tropical Varieties. From the topological point of view the tropical varieties are piecewise-linearpolyhedral complexes equipped with a particular geometric str- ture coming from tropical algebra. From the point of view of complex geometry this geometric structure is the worst possible degeneration of complex structure on a manifold.

Although largely sympathetic to Freud's clinical achievement, the existentialists criticized Freudian metapsychology as inappropriate to a truly humanistic psychology. Gerald Izenberg evaluates the critique of Freud in the work of two existential philosophers, Martin Heidegger and Jean-Paul Sartre, and two existential psychiatrists, Ludwig Binswanger and Medard Boss. His book interprets the relationship of psychoanalysis and existentialism and traces the history of a crisis in the European rationalist tradition. The author unveils the positivist foundations of Freud's theory of meaning and discusses the reactions it provoked in the work of Binswanger, Boss, and Sartre. Probing beneath the methodological dispute, he shows that the argument involved a challenge to the conception of the self that had dominated European thought since the Enlightenment. Existentialism, reflecting the turmoil of the inter-war and post-war years, furnished a theory of motivation better able to account for Freud's clinical data than his own rationalist metapsychology. This theory made problematic the existentialist idea of authenticity and freedom, however, and so the attempt to provide a substitute ethic and concept of mental health ended in failure, although in the process the basic questions were posed that must be answered in any modern social theory. Originally published in 1976. Social Transparency – Projects on Housing

For the past decade, the Los Angeles architect Michael Maltzan has designed multiunit housing in a city known for its proliferation of single-family residences. Working with the Skid Row Housing Trust, these projects advance new forms of supportive housing that address the services and infrastructures needed for their particular populations of inhabitants. For Maltzan, housing manifests an incredibly complex set of spatial problems-social, economic, political, typological, aesthetic, and urban-that recast architecture's role in framing the social relationships and individual challenges of everyday urban life. Social Transparency includes a recent lecture by Maltzan at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, as well as reflections from fellow practitioners on this sustained engagement with housing and the city.
Real Enriques Surfaces

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. K

nidottu
This is the first attempt of a systematic study of real Enriques surfaces culminating in their classification up to deformation. Simple explicit topological invariants are elaborated for identifying the deformation classes of real Enriques surfaces. Some of theses are new and can be applied to other classes of surfaces or higher-dimensional varieties. Intended for researchers and graduate students in real algebraic geometry it may also interest others who want to become familiar with the field and its techniques. The study relies on topology of involutions, arithmetics of integral quadratic forms, algebraic geometry of surfaces, and the hyperkähler structure of K3-surfaces. A comprehensive summary of the necessary results and techniques from each of these fields is included. Some results are developed further, e.g., a detailed study of lattices with a pair of commuting involutions and a certain class of rational complex surfaces.
There is no shortage of climate-neutral energy. There is only the global task of tapping climate-neutral energy sources both locally on a small scale and globally on a large scale and connecting them to the centres of consumption. This book focuses on the enormous potential in Europes neighbourhood. The huge, very cost-effective and secure solar and wind energy from the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East North Africa (MENA) will be developed developed - by local governments partnering with (international) companies - at a great pace. At the same time, offshore wind energy in Europes seas will become the mainstay of energy supply for our industry.
