This book analyses debt management in sub-national governments in Mexico via quantitative and qualitative methods of research. Particularly, the project initiates the much-needed discussions on the role that sub-national governments in Mexico can play in the financing of infrastructure, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with their participation in capital markets. The author includes interviews with state leaders to corroborate the statistical analysis created and generated with the federal municipal and state databases. Case studies include: four states—Nuevo León, Guanajuato, the State of Mexico, and Mexico City—and three major metropolitan areas—León, Guanajuato, and Monterrey. Interviews with these key financial players, not only at the federal level but also at local level, in their interpretation, usability and access of the current financial models are assessed and help to explain the current financial state of Mexico.

Buildings Must Die

Buildings Must Die

Stephen Cairns; Jane M. Jacobs

MIT Press

Part memento mori for architecture, and part invocation to reimagine the design values that lay at the heart of its creative purpose.Buildings, although inanimate, are often assumed to have "life." And the architect, through the act of design, is assumed to be their conceiver and creator. But what of the "death" of buildings? What of the decay, deterioration, and destruction to which they are inevitably subject? And what might such endings mean for architecture's sense of itself? In Buildings Must Die, Stephen Cairns and Jane Jacobs look awry at core architectural concerns. They examine spalling concrete and creeping rust, contemplate ruins old and new, and pick through the rubble of earthquake-shattered churches, imploded housing projects, and demolished Brutalist office buildings. Their investigation of the death of buildings reorders architectural notions of creativity, reshapes architecture's preoccupation with good form, loosens its vanities of durability, and expands its sense of value. It does so not to kill off architecture as we know it, but to rethink its agency and its capacity to make worlds differently. Cairns and Jacobs offer an original contemplation of architecture that draws on theories of waste and value. Their richly illustrated case studies of building "deaths" include the planned and the unintended, the lamented and the celebrated. They take us from Moline to Christchurch, from London to Bangkok, from Tokyo to Paris. And they feature the work of such architects as Eero Saarinen, Carlo Scarpa, Cedric Price, Arata Isozaki, Rem Koolhaas and François Roche. Buildings Must Die is both a memento mori for architecture and a call to to reimagine the design values that lay at the heart of its creative purpose.

Traditionally the focus of triathlon is on volume, intensity, and training periodization—doing particular workouts during the months, weeks, and days leading up to a race. But what if you could improve performance without logging extra distance on the road or in the water? That is the promise of Triathletes in Motion: Assessing Movement for World-Class Technique and Performance. In this book, Marc Evans introduces the Evans Assessment principle and makes the case that every triathlon training regimen should start with the physical assessments of movement. By looking carefully at movements during these assessments, you can detect limitations to mobility, flexibility, strength, and stability. These limiters cannot be corrected by traditional technique instruction alone, so Evans presents specific exercises and tests that address each one. The results are greater efficiency, fewer injuries, and faster performances. Whether you are a veteran triathlete seeking a performance breakthrough, a newer triathlete starting the training season, or a coach or member of a triathlon federation searching for that edge, training should start with Triathletes in Motion. This resource includes hundreds of tests and exercises to help triathletes swim, cycle, and run faster and more economically. Marc Evans was triathlon's first professional coach and has consulted, coached, collaborated with, and mentored some of the biggest names in the sport, including Dave Scott and Scott Tinley. His coauthor, Jane Cappaert, is a leading expert in sport biomechanics. Now they make their unique expertise available to everyone in Triathletes in Motion.
