How is technology changing the way people remember? This book explores the interplay of memory stored in the brain (internal memory) and outside of the brain (external memory), providing a thorough interdisciplinary review of the current literature, including relevant theoretical frameworks from across a variety of disciplines in the sciences, arts, and humanities. It also presents the findings of a rich and novel empirical data set, based on a comprehensive survey on the shifting interplay of internal and external memory in the 21st century. Results reveal a growing symbiosis between the two forms of memory in our everyday lives. The book presents a new theoretical framework for understanding the interplay of internal and external memory, and their complementary strengths. It concludes with a guide to important dimensions, questions, and methods for future research.Memory and Technology will be of interest to researchers, professors, andstudents across the disciplines of psychology, philosophy, library and information science, human factors, media and cultural studies, anthropology and archaeology, photography, and cognitive rehabilitation, as well as anyone interested in how technology is affecting human memory._____ "This is a novel book, with interesting and valuable data on an important, meaningful topic, as well as a gathering of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary ideas...The research is accurately represented and inclusive. As a teaching tool, I can envision graduate seminars in different disciplines drawing on the material as the basis for teaching and discussions." Dr. Linda A. Henkel, Fairfield University "This book documents the achievements of a vibrant scientific project – you feel the enthusiasm of the authors for their research. The organization of the manuscript introduces the reader into a comparatively new field the same way as pioneering authors have approached it." Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schönpflug, Freie Universität Berlin
Retrieving Bones

The Korean War was a major event in American history. It marked an abrupt end to the euphoria Americans felt in the wake of victory in World War II and turned out to be the harbinger of disaster in Vietnam a decade later. Though three years of brutal fighting resulted in millions of casualties, the final truce line of 1953 corresponded almost exactly to the positions the opponents held when the fighting began. Back home, the returning veterans met with little interest in or appreciation of what they had endured. Consequently, literary responses to the Korean War did not find an eager readership. Few people, it seemed, wanted to read about what they perceived as a backwater war that possessed neither grand scale nor apparent nobility, a war that ended not with a bang, but a whimper. Yet an important literature has come out of the Korean War. As we mark the fiftieth anniversary of the war, these writings are well worth our attention. Many of the twelve stories and fifty poems assembled in Retrieving Bones have long been out of print and are almost impossible to find in any other source. The editors have enhanced this collection by providing maps, a chronology of the Korean War, and annotated lists of novels, works of nonfiction, and films. In a detailed introduction, Ehrhart and Jason discuss the milestones of the Korean War and place each fiction writer and poet represented into historical and literary contexts. Among the writers and poets are · James Lee Burke · Eugene Burdick · William Chamberlain · Rolando Hinojosa · Reg Saner · Vern Sneider · Stanford Whitmore · Keith Wilson

Historical-critical Introduction to the Philosophy of Mythology

Historical-critical Introduction to the Philosophy of Mythology

State University of New York Press
2008
pokkari
Appearing in English for the first time, Schelling's 1842 lectures develop the idea that many philosophical concepts are born of religious-mythological notions.Translated here into English for the first time, F. W. J. Schelling's 1842 lectures on the Philosophy of Mythology are an early example of interdisciplinary thinking. In seeking to show the development of the concept of the divine Godhead in and through various mythological systems (particularly of ancient Greece, Egypt, and the Near East), Schelling develops the idea that many philosophical concepts are born of religious-mythological notions. In so doing, he brings together the essential relatedness of the development of philosophical systems, human language, history, ancient art forms, and religious thought. Along the way, he engages in analyses of modern philosophical views about the origins of philosophy's conceptual abstractions, as well as literary and philological analyses of ancient literature and poetry.

The obesity epidemic and the growing debate about what, if any, public health policy should be adopted is the subject of endless debates within the media and in governments around the world. Whilst much has been written on the subject, this book takes a unique approach by looking at the obesity epidemic from an economic perspective. Written in a language accessible to non-specialists, the authors provide a timely discussion of evolving nutrition policies in both the developing and developed world, discuss the factors influencing supply and demand of food supply, and review the evidence for various factors which may explain recent trends in diets, weight, and health. The traditional economic model assumes people choose to be overweight as part of a utility maximisation process that involves choices about what to eat and drink, how much time to spend on leisure, food preparation, and exercise, and choices about appearance and health. Market and behavioural failures, however, such as time available to a person, education, costs imposed on the health system and economic productivity provide the economic rationale for government intervention. The authors explore various policy measures designed to deal with the epidemic and examine their effectiveness within a cost-benefit analysis framework. While providing a sound economic basis for analysing policy decisions, the book also aims to show the underlying limits of the economic framework in quantifying changes in public well-being.

Effective Altruism is a movement and a philosophy that has reinvigorated the debate about the nature of beneficence. At base, it is the consistent application of microeconomic principles to beneficent action. The movement has exposed that many forms of giving do little good (or do active harm), but others do tremendous good.Questioning Beneficence uses Effective Altruism as a launch pad to ask hard questions about beneficence more generally. Must we be Effective Altruists, or are Effective Altruism and the ideas driving the movement a mistake? How much should we give—if anything— and how should we give it? What are the respective roles of different kinds of institutions? Is charity anti-democratic and do billionaire philanthropists have too much power? Is Effective Altruism just utilitarianism in disguise?Questioning Beneficence is written by four philosophers, each with distinct points of view. It introduces a new standard for debating ideas in philosophy as each author poses and answers three questions and each of his three co-authors responds to those questions in turn. Finally, the first author replies to his co-authors’ responses. Throughout the book, there is a spirit of curiosity, intellectual risk taking, and truth-seeking, rather than point-scoring and one-upmanship. This book demonstrates what open-minded, real dialogue on an important issue can be at its very best.Key Features:Introduces a new roundtable format for philosophical debates: each of four authors takes the lead in constructing and answering three questions, each co-author then responds, and the first author then replies to the others’ responses.Explores salient philosophical questions raised by beneficence, likeCan philanthropy be undemocratic? Why are people so bad at charity and what can we do about it?How important is beneficence compared to other values? Can Effective Altruism be part of a meaningful moral life? Consistently written in a clear and engaging style, suitable for both undergraduate students and curious general readers

My True Life Stories Of Spiritual Warfare And The Paranormal: Empowering You to Banish the Unwanted

Spiritual Warfare - Paranormal Events This book is about spiritual warfare and the paranormal, and how these paranormal events shaped my Christian beliefs. What you are about to read are true spiritual and paranormal accounts witnessed and lived by me and my immediate family members. These experiences took place during my childhood and into my adult life. This subject of the paranormal is a touchy subject with many individuals and with many Christians. The purpose of sharing this with you is two-fold. The trauma and fear that I experienced as a child is something from which no child should ever suffer, and the second reason is I want to empower you with the tools and knowledge to rid your own home and life of any unwelcome "guests". These entities are not to be taken lightly. They also should not take over you or your home -Excerpts- "It is imperative to read this book entirely to fully understand the complexity of my experiences and the information that I present within. Please understand, this book is not about rejoicing in getting rid of the paranormal, but showing others how to fight off the paranormal. I see people all the time dealing with the paranormal and not knowing of the root of their problem I feel this book will guide and show them how to handle such situations." "...Spiritual warfare, in particular, incited my interest probably due to my many childhood paranormal experiences. This fascination of these studies was ever increasing and continued on for many years after that. In the year 1994, I had my next paranormal experience and this is when I put my Christian faith and all that I had studied about spiritual warfare, into practice." "One particular night, my bedroom was dark and only a bathroom light was on in the hallway. Everyone was already asleep. Being the oldest, I claimed the top bunk. I remember lying and simply looking up at the ceiling when suddenly, out of my peripheral view at the side of my bed, I was struck by a figure of a dark shadow man. I turned my head only to find myself in an extremely compromised position with this figure staring right back at me. Because his head was level with mine, and was no greater than a mere foot from my face, I became consumed with absolute terror as we were face-to-face." "...The game was on between me and this demon spirit For the next hour to two hours, I was not cleaning the building, physically. I was now cleaning this building with the Holy Spirit and the Bible."

Nearly every church is trying to help their congregants build relationships with others, grow as disciples, and/or engage in meaningful service through small groups. Many have argued that these small groups are the preferred vehicle for relationship building, disciple making, and membership assimilation in the local church, especially in large, multisite churches.Leading Small Groups That Thrive shows small group leaders, step by step, how to plan for, launch, build, sustain, and multiply highly effective, transformational, healthy small group experiences where people grow spiritually together. Based on a large-scale research study of small group pastors, leaders, and members, Leading Small Groups That Thrive gives church leaders both what they want--practical, straightforward, actual small group member voices and experiences, and compelling guidance on how to build transformational groups complemented with real-life examples and data of successful small groups--and what they need--substantial, challenging insights and a data-driven model grounded in the latest research on church small groups.

Until now it has not been possible to accurately identify grasshoppers in Florida, and their fascinating biology was unavailable to all but specialists. This first field guide to the grasshoppers of Florida introduces one of the most obvious and important, though little appreciated, insect groups. It provides identification of the 70 species known to occur in Florida and may be used in other southeastern states where many of these grasshoppers are also found. The authors present the biology, behavior, ecological significance, and damage potential of grasshoppers and emphasize their interrelationship with Florida's fauna. A straightforward, detailed description of each species is accompanied by a distribution map. Nearly all species are pictured in color, and detailed line drawings help distinguish among those more difficult to identify. Grasshoppers of Florida will be invaluable to amateur naturalists, students of entomology and natural history, and professional biologists.
