The Solitary Bees

The Solitary Bees

The most up-to-date and authoritative resource on the biology and evolution of solitary beesWhile social bees such as honey bees and bumble bees are familiar to most people, they comprise less than 10 percent of all bee species in the world. The vast majority of bees lead solitary lives, surviving without the help of a hive and using their own resources to fend off danger and protect their offspring. This book draws on new research to provide a comprehensive and authoritative overview of solitary bee biology, offering an unparalleled look at these remarkable insects. The Solitary Bees uses a modern phylogenetic framework to shed new light on the life histories and evolution of solitary bees. It explains the foraging behavior of solitary bees, their development, and competitive mating tactics. The book describes how they construct complex nests using an amazing variety of substrates and materials, and how solitary bees have co-opted beneficial mites, nematodes, and fungi to provide safe environments for their brood. It looks at how they have evolved intimate partnerships with flowering plants and examines their associations with predators, parasites, microbes, and other bees. This up-to-date synthesis of solitary bee biology is an essential resource for students and researchers, one that paves the way for future scholarship on the subject.Beautifully illustrated throughout, The Solitary Bees also documents the critical role solitary bees play as crop pollinators, and raises awareness of the dire threats they face, from habitat loss and climate change to pesticides, pathogens, parasites, and invasive species.

The Dialectic in Journalism

The Dialectic in Journalism

Carter R. Bryan; John C. Merrill

Louisiana State University Press

A main intent of this book is to show how freedom relates to ethics in journalism and at the same time to discuss how a number of other contraries or antinomies are unsuitable in the real world of journalism. I also hope to demonstrate how a synthesis, a position near the Aristotelian Golden Mean, is the best solution to many of the problems of mass communication. We need to form the habit of thinking dialectically about many of our journalistic problems realizing that a clash of opposing positions is not harmful but useful in the constantly changing world of journalism. - From the IntroductionOver the past thirty years, John C. Merrill has produced what many critics consider an essential body of writing on the relatedness of journalism and philosophy. He speaks with authority for a growing group of scholars who are looking behind the product of journalism for the ideologies that create them. His latest work, The Dialectic in Journalism,is an ambitious and comprehensive examination of the forces at work throughout the press. The book focuses on two important and timely issues: journalistic license and social control, or in a larger sense, freedom and responsibility. What are the just limits of the press? Where may libertarians and statists of the press find common ground? How do journalists convert the world into the word?Merrill places sweeping questions such as these in the context of the Western intellectual tradition. Beginning with the Heraclitean observation that reality is constantly changing, he traces the development of the dialectic through Plato and Aristotle to Rousseau, Spinoza, Nietzsche, and Hegel. Merrill connect these thinkers with many of the problems facing the journalistic community today. He uses the Hegelian dialectic to suggest that a moderating force is at work in the contemporary journalism. He shows that the tensions created between the concept of freedom of expression and necessity of restraint resolve themselves in a synthesis of ""social responsibility.""Readers familiar with Merrill's earlier works will find in this new book the same strong concern for the ethical foundations of journalism. The Dialectic in Journalism is sufficiently rigorous philosophically that it sustains a close critical reading, and yet the general reader will find it straightforward and lucid. Journalists will want to read this book to gain new insight into the frequently unexamined philosophy of their trade, and the public will profit from a broader understand of the force that plays a central role in shaping our view of the world.

This report explores the relationship between armies and nation-building and argues that U.S.-sponsored Security Force Assistance (SFA) could become more effective by focusing less on force structure, military capabilities, and readiness, and focusing more on ideology and the extent to which a client army complements a host nation's larger nation-building project.

My Life in Nevada Politics tells the entertaining, informative, and at times poignant story of the rise of Richard Bryan from humble beginnings in Las Vegas to the pinnacle of Nevada politics during a time of great change across the state and nation. Through his memoir, Bryan provides keen insight into the mechanics of politics, and the book serves as a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the Silver State.Born in Washington, D.C. in 1937, Bryan grew up in Las Vegas. His interest in politics started early, winning school-class elections and expressing a personal goal of one day becoming Governor of Nevada. He was elected student body president at the University of Nevada. His career in public service began as a deputy district attorney in Clark County. In 1966, he became the first county public defender in state history. Bryan served in the Nevada Legislature in both the Assembly and Senate before winning the statewide office of Attorney General in 1978. He was elected Nevada Governor in 1982, winning re-election in 1986. Bryan was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1988, reelected in 1994, and served on the committees on Commerce, Banking, Taxation, and Intelligence, and chaired the Ethics Committee. He retired from the Senate in 2001 and returned to Nevada.Bryan's list of accomplishments is extensive. He was largely responsible for the early call-to-arms in the fight against the Department of Energy's attempt to create a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain. As governor, he reorganized state economic development programs, improved environmental protections for Lake Tahoe and other threatened areas, and made unprecedented appointments of women. In the Senate, Bryan authored the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act and the National Conservation Area for the High Rock Desert country. He had a front-row seat to the historic buildup to the Iraq War and the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. In retirement, Bryan continues to serve the state through his participation on a wide range of committees. Throughout his political career, Bryan, with wife Bonnie at his side, traversed Nevada from its tiniest hamlets to the metro areas of Reno and Las Vegas with unrivaled zeal in his efforts to represent the state's citizens. He is famous for knowing thousands of his constituents not only by their first names, but also recalling details of their lives. The simple fact is, while in service to Nevada, Bryan was in his element in the place he loves best.

Through 15 years of intense observation and analysis, Tony Gruebl, Jeff Welch, and Bryan Wolbert from Think Systems, Inc. (also known as, Think), identified a powerful controlling force hiding in plain sight revealed within The Red Pill Executive. Tony, Jeff, and Bryan named their approach to harnessing this controlling force, the Red Pill model. Every company has an invisible framework called culture. Red Pill Operators sense it where others are oblivious. Culture determines how business happens and what success looks like. Some cultures love growth; others, a perfect record in customer service. For some, it’s sales or P&L—regardless of tanking satisfaction or turnover. With culture as their blueprint, Red Pill Operators shape their processes, tools, language, staff, and every other aspect to align—not just with the strategy and mission—but to the culture as it exists in time. The Red Pill Executive offers operating executives and small business owners’ fresh insight into the grooming of their frontline managers who carry out critical initiatives. This new paradigm unlocks massive potential for Operations Executives and their team members who have courage to embrace them. It showcases a new way of thinking that empowers operators to capture value and corrects the one-size-fits-all approach created by the project management industry in reaction to massive project failure. In The Red Pill Executive, Tony, Jeff, and Bryan use a straight-talking style and movie metaphors from The Matrix, Rocky, The Edge of Tomorrow, etc., to deliver their results in an engaging and readable style.
