Naturally Occurring Small Molecules For Disease And Cancer Treatment: Therapeutic Benefits In Combination Therapy
Western drugs and target medicines for disease treatment come with undesirable side effects that have limited their use in patients for an extended period of time. It is warranted to develop a treatment strategy with alternative medicines to reduce toxicity relating to drugs, in particular, cancer drugs. Thus, a combination therapy with herbal medicines provides a more effective treatment method for hard-to-treat diseases. The recent breakthroughs in naturally occurring small molecules from herbal medicines have provided experimental evidence and are clinically significant in treatment strategies. This unique volume presents the recent developments in the field of herbal medicines for the treatment of diseases and cancer. Recent progress on small molecules isolated from herbal medicines that exhibit therapeutic benefits in humans is highlighted. The book provides an overview of the significant discoveries and pioneering contributions of herbal medicines in combination with other drugs; the author's evaluation of the combination therapy in cancer treatment; and a recent discovery of crocodile tissue extract with pharmacological properties.

We hear much about innovation-usually in the context of leading corporations, new technologies, or breakthrough inventions that boldly remove obstacles to previously unmet needs. What is often overlooked is innovating at the level of the individual. Mere mortals have unrealized goals too, especially within the organizations to which they belong. After all, they are often the ones driving initiatives-yet it is the organization that gets the credit. Innovating isn't just reserved for organizations. You, too, can innovate through problems intentionally, without waiting for a lucky lightbulb moment. This book shows how you can generate innovative value-the unwarranted gap between effort and result, where a relatively small amount of effort delivers a disproportionately large result. Small effort>big result. Most unrealized goals-especially in business-are blocked by problems. Yet each problem conceals a pathway to its own resolution. There are six ways to navigate this pathway to innovate, whether a problem is already known, not yet recognized, or, somewhat implausibly, doesn't yet exist.

A small church nestling deep in the countryside is instantly evocative. Why is it there at all? Whom does it serve? These are worthy questions to ask of the many picturesque churches that are scattered across our landscape. Many smaller churches have a fascinating history and wonderful architecture: these buildings deserve our attention and further study. This companion volume to the author’s successful Discovering England’s Smallest Churches covers over fifty churches in Wales which have naves of thirty feet or less. The churches are selected from the whole of the Principality, north, mid and south, and are arranged by county. Some, like Pilleth, are on battlefield sites; others, such as Llanano, have magnificent screens. The book, which is lavishly illustrated with colour and black-and-white photographs, drawings and location maps, will appeal both to those living in Wales and to visitors. Additionally, the appendices provide the reader with information regarding the various church trusts operating in the area and the work they undertake to preserve and publicise the churches of Wales.John Kinross is a member of ‘Friends of Friendless Churches’ and a lay reader. His earlier book, Discovering England’s Smallest Churches, was enthusiastically reviewed by Simon Jenkins.

The Smallest Christmas Tree will magically captivate the inner child that lies dormant within your soul. Each one of us at one time or another has felt unwanted, overwhelmed, and consumed by the unfair forces of nature as well as by our own earth-laden inadequacies. Yet, deep within us lies the unyielding strength to resist frustration and to bravely face the daily hardships that attempt to denude our morale and feelings of self-worth. The Smallest Christmas Tree is a story of faith, friendships, courage, and most of all...LOVE. It will motivate the discouraged, influence those feeling inferior, and revitalize the true spirit of Christmas within each one of us... The Smallest Christmas Tree represents the indelible values that parents imprint on their children, and how encouragement and love, even in the absence of material gifts, can dominate our character.

Smalltalk and Object Orientation

Smalltalk and Object Orientation

John Hunt

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. K

This book was originally written to support an introductory course in Object Orientation through the medium of Smalltalk (and VisualWorks in particular). However, it can be used as a book to teach the reader Smalltalk, to introduce object orientation as well as present object oriented design and analysis. It takes as its basic premise that most Computer Scientists I Software Engineers learn best by doing rather than from theoretical notes. The chapters therefore attempt to introduce concepts by getting you the reader to do things, rather than by extensive theoretical discussions. This means that these chapters take a hands-on approach to the subject and assume that the student/reader has a suitable Small talk environment available to them. The chapters are listed below and are divided into six parts. The reader is advised to work through Parts 1 and 3 thoroughly in order to gain a detailed understanding of object orientation. Part 2 then provides an introduction to the Smalltalk environment and language. Other chapters may then be dipped into as required. For example, if the reader wishes to hone their Smalltalk skills then the chapters in Part 4 would be useful. However, if at that point they wish to get on and discover the delights of graphical user interfaces in Smalltalk, then Part 5 could be read next. Part 6 presents some more advances subjects such as metaclasses and concurrency which are not required for straight forward Small talk development.

Teaching in the Small College

Teaching in the Small College

John A. Burden; Richard A. Wright

Praeger Publishers Inc
1986
sidottu
This new study, written by a distinguished group of small college faculty and consultants, provides a contemporary portrait of small colleges--the educational advantages they offer, the problems they face, and innovative solutions now being developed. The authors discuss the benefits of education in a small college setting, including a tightly knit community of learning, a larger proportion of faculty dedicated to teaching, more personal interaction between faculty and students, a greater degree of student participation in all areas, and more emphasis on the moral/ethical implications of education. The teaching-versus-research debate and its implications for the small college are considered from the perspectives of institutional visibility, enrollments, funding, and educational values. The problems faced by small college faculty, such as teaching in a small department and the strain of fulfilling multiple and often conflicting roles, are thoroughly explored. Chapters designed to help the college teacher on the job offer suggestions on computer planning in the small college, coping with teaching courses outside one's areas of expertise, fitting in research despite heavy teaching loads, and teaching in areas such as physical education, history, philosophy, and liberal arts in general. A case study of a cooperative department established by several colleges and a discussion of the problems of limited library collections present practical information on new approaches to enhancing an institution's effectiveness.
A Guide to Small Wind Energy Conversion Systems

A Guide to Small Wind Energy Conversion Systems

John Twidell

Cambridge University Press
2011
pokkari
This enterprising book was intended as a practical guide to wind-energy generators up to 100 kW rated capacity. Very small machines such as battery chargers are included, though the main emphasis is on the 20 kW to 100 kW range. Wind-energy conversion systems are being purchased in increasing numbers in the UK. At the time of publication, they were used mainly in remote and island installations (especially on farms) to reduce dependence on conventional fuels such as oil and bottled gas. But the book was not just a practical handbook for those who already had a machine; it supplied sufficient information to allow potential purchasers to decide whether the installation of such a generator would be cost-effective in their own particular circumstances.
Administration in the Small Membership Church
For many pastors, church administration may be their least favorite area of ministry. But whether they love it or loathe it, they probably spend more time on administration than on any other single area of ministry. This book will help pastors create and maintain effective structures that will enable them to spend most of their time on what they truly value. It describes church administration as a ministry in the small membership church. It outlines key steps to organize and manage time, volunteers, and resources of the small membership churches including multi-point charges. It gives practical methods for creating and maintaining viable structures for effective church management. It helps pastors organize their church(es), so that they can focus on what gives them the most satisfaction in ministry. It also helps pastors recruit and retain the right people for the right jobs, thereby maximizing ministry especially where resources are limited. It also gives pastors ways to sharpen their vision for local church and mission beyond the local church ministry.
