Jonathan Edwards is one of the outstanding figures in the history of the Christian church--he was, quite simply, a man of towering intellect and towering spirituality. But it has been noted, even by his friends and admirers, that his thought is also marked at times by certain idiosyncrasies which inevitably introduce certain complexities into his philosophical-theological system. This study contends that the theme of divine immediacy is the controlling theme and the correlating principle within Edwards's thought. It analyzes the theme of divine immediacy in the thought of Jonathan Edwards under four major heads: creation, the will, ecclesiology, and spiritual experience. Indeed, Dr. Carrick claims that the theme of the immediacy of God is the Ariadne's thread, which runs with consistency through the multiple aspects of Edwards's philosophical, theological, ecclesiological, experiential, and homiletical interests. But sometimes a man's strength is also his weakness, and it would appear that Edwards's profound commitment to the concept and the reality of the immediacy of God entails significant problems for his entire philosophical-theological system. Edwards's concept of divine immediacy finds its supreme expression, surely, in his doctrine of continuous creation; but is it not the case that this doctrine of continuous creation is in conflict with his determinism, that its tendency is to destroy the moral responsibility of man, and that it makes God both the author and the actor of sin? In short, is it not the case that Edwards's Ariadne's thread is, in fact, also his Achilles' heel?

Jonathan Edwards and World Mission

Jonathan Edwards and World Mission

"NOW THE KINGDOM OF CHRIST shall in the most strict and literal sense extend to all nations and the whole earth." Jonathan Edwards's bold assertion envisioned a future in which the gospel of Jesus Christ would progress into non-Christian lands and eventually the glory of God would encompass the entire earth. The gospel will make steady progress out in the world, as the world would "look to Christ and be saved." The telos of human history will be God's glorification in the redemption of the world. Just as the waters cover the seas, God will communicate his glory to the nations by the advancement of Christ's kingdom. Edwards wrote, "There shall be no part of the world of mankind but that shall be covered with the knowledge of God." This abiding hope of the advancement of the Christian religion proved to be a major facet of Edwards's theology. This hope has inspired countless pastors, missionaries, and theologians throughout church history. Michael McClymond and Gerald McDermott note that Edwards's massive influence has led some to call him the "grandfather of modern Protestant missions." While numerous projects have shed light on related areas, this book seeks to fill a lacuna in Edwards studies by presenting a historical-theological construction of Jonathan Edwards's theology of world mission. The major weakness of the current research is that most of the studies have not seen Edwards as a theologian of mission. They have merely presented him as a missionary or as a theologian. While these studies are extraordinarily helpful, they have not taken up extensive historical-theological analyses of the theme of world mission within Edwards's wider theology. But what was Edwards's theology of mission? How can it be identified? This book argues that upon a reading of key texts within the Edwardsian corpus, a coherent theology of mission emerges. REVIEWS In view of the abundance of literature presenting Jonathan Edwards as a "missionary" or a "theologian," it is rare to find a lacuna in this terrain. Nonetheless, this book makes a fresh contribution by insightfully amalgamating these two dimensions---analyzing Edwards as a theologian of world mission. Adam Cavalier's innovative missional emphasis on familiar treatises such as, The End for Which God Created the World, Original Sin, Freedom of the Will, An Humble Attempt, and Religious Affections makes not only for a fascinating read but an inspiring one as well. Chris Chun, PhDDirector of Jonathan Edwards Center and Professor of Church History, Gateway Seminary This new work by Dr. Cavalier on the missiological vision of Jonathan Edwards, who has been rightly described as "America's Augustine," provides an important monograph on one of the key ways that Edwards' legacy has impacted the church. English Baptists around William Carey were led, for instance, by their reading of Edwards' literary corpus available to them, to launch out into a bold plan of cross-cultural missions...This compact monograph incisively details the scope of Edwards' thought and its contours and is a very welcome addition to the secondary literature of Edwardsiana. Michael A.G. Haykin, FRHistSChair and Professor of Church History and Director of The Andrew Fuller Center for Baptist Studies, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Even though Edwards lived before the great century of Protestant missions, his theology is filled with missional instincts which sought the spread of the gospel around the world. Missionary and historical theologian Adam Cavalier skillfully draws together the pertinent texts in Edwards's corpus to demonstrate the missional thrust of his theological vision. He does so in such a way that is both faithful to Edwards and motivational to the missionary cause in the twenty first century. Jonathan Edwards was just an ordinary American boy but he was different too. The country he lived in wasn’t the America of today – but a new world full of adventure and opportunity. Battles and Tomahawks were just some of the thrilling adventures that his family lived through. But Jonathan also loved the small things in life too. In an age of scientific discovery, Edwards saw God’s beauty displayed most perfectly through nature. His journals are filled with drawings of plants, animals, and spiders because he knew that each one of them reflected the creativity of its Creator. His mind was full of questions and he grappled for the answers. Intellectually there were few to beat him. However it wasn’t just his amazing intelligence that set him apart from other boys his age – he may have had a thirst for knowledge but he also had a strong desire for the things of God. His genius and abilities teamed up well with his faith and love for the Lord Jesus Christ. One day the country that would become the United States of America would look back at this man of brilliance as a founding influence on their land. The story of the Stockbridge Mohican Indians, unlike that portrayed in the legendary Last of the Mohicans, is a story of tragedy and deceit, and yet one of endurance and strength. This proud people, despite the many efforts to remove their identity and eradicate their unique culture, have endured and continue to flourish, ensuring future generations will benefit from their rich legacy. This book chronicles the history of the Mohican people, highlighting their desire to know more about the "Great, Good Spirit," by asking for a Christian minister to come to them. After the untimely death of their first missionary, John Sergeant, they were blessed by the ministry of Jonathan Edwards, the foremost theologian in American history. He has been described as, "an activist, preacher, contemplative, missionary, philosopher, and theologian." Not only did Edwards bring them the Word of God, he fought relentlessly for their rights. Herein lies a glimpse into the history of this noble people and Edwards' efforts for their physical and spiritual well-being.
Jonathan Edwards and Hebrews: A Harmonic Interpretation of Scripture
This publication is the first survey of Jonathan Edwards's harmonic interpretation of Epistle to the Hebrews. This methodology emphasized harmony between the history of the world and its account in the Word. Drawn from a planned publication on The Harmony of the Old and New Testament, the harmonic interpretation of Jonathan Edwards sought to harmonize the Old and New Testament by employing three habits: (1) the habit of observing Old Testament prophetic fulfillment in the person and work of Christ in the New Testament; (2) the habit of perceiving typology in the natural world and Scripture that typified the Messiah, Jesus Christ; (3) the habit of harmonizing the Old and New Testament according to its doctrines and precepts. After introducing this methodology to readers, this study provides eight thematic case studies on how Edwards demonstrated this methodology in his interpretation of the Epistle to the Hebrews.
Jonathan Edwards within the Enlightenment: Controversy, Experience, & Thought
n her Epilogue entitled What Is His Greatness?, Ola Elizabeth Winslow stated in the first serious modern biography of Jonathan Edwards: In a word, it is the greatness of one who had a determining art of initiating and directing a popular movement of far-reaching consequence, and who in addition, laid the foundations for a new system of religious thought, also of far-reaching consequence. After two and a half centuries since Edwardss death, Winslows statement is undoubtedly true, and perhaps, more so now than ever. The recovery of Edwards pioneered by Perry Miller, Ola Winslow, and Thomas Schafer, among others, has become what is often referred to as an Edwards renaissance, and has been made even more popular among lay people by John Piper, Stephen Nichols, and the like. Since the free online access of The Works of Jonathan Edwards by Yale University, dozens of books, and articles, as well as numerous dissertations, each year are written to seek a facet of Edwardss greatness, and thus as an exemplar of his continued far-reaching consequence. Jonathan Edwards, more than any other pre-revolutionary colonial thinker, grappled with the promises and perils of the Enlightenment. Organized by John T. Lowe and Daniel N. Gullotta, Jonathan Edwards within the Enlightenment brings together a group of young and early career scholars to present their propping the life, times, and theology of one of Americas greatest minds. Many of these subjects have been seldom explored by scholars while others offer new and exciting avenues into well covered territory. Some of these topics include Edwards interaction with and involvement in slavery, colonialism, racism, as well as musings on gender, populism, violence, pain, and witchcraft.
