Except for some small, but intense, military uprisings shortly after its beginning, what has been called "Venezuela's 40 years of democracy" (1958-1998) was marked by a level of stability that most of other Latin American countries were unable to enjoy at the time. Having an oil-fueled economy, the country saw a sustained rapid growth of its infrastructure during the 1970s, a period known as the "Saudi Venezuela".At the beginning of the 1980s, however, the country was in a situation where it unable to pay its external debt. Economic hardships started and, in consequence, some sectors of Venezuelan society started to question the then-in-force political system; with one such sector being the military. One group, the Bolivarianos - influenced by the ideas of Sim n Bol var, the man who 150 years before liberated six countries from Spanish rule - and led by Lt. Colonel Hugo Rafael Ch vez Fr as, considered that it was time for the military to do something. As result, on 4 February 1992, fighting broke out between the Bolivarianos, who aimed to topple President Carlos Andr s P rez, and troops loyal to the president. After heavy fighting and a number of casualties that remains disputed, Ch vez surrendered in a televised speech that became iconic when he recognized that "(...) for now, the goals (...) could not be achieved (...)".Later that year, on 27 November, another uprising took place. This time, it was not the Army that was trying to oust President P rez, but the Air Force. Throughout the day, the skies of Caracas witnessed spectacular dogfights and bombing raids on government buildings. After hours of combat, when it became clear that the rebels would be unable to achieve their goals, they surrendered. This time, however, their leadership decided to escape to Peru, where they were welcomed by then-President FujimoriEver since the Spaniards left Latin America, it has been a region where coups and rebellions have followed one after another. However, few are the cases where the impact of such events goes far beyond the borders of the country where they took place, and the two Venezuelan uprisings of 1992 are undoubtedly part of that list. The events discussed in this book cannot be considered simple military uprisings. The political implications they had make them the effective birth of the Bolivarian Revolution, and therefore, of a new political era in the continent that has been dubbed "Pink Tide".

Rich in oil, Venezuela should, in theory, have been one of the wealthiest nations in Latin America if not the world, yet in the 1980s its economy collapsed. In 1992 elements of the armed forces of Venezuela twice attempted to overthrow the nation's government. These coup attempts saw the army, navy and air force fighting one another, and the other security forces, on the streets and in skies of Venezuela in what would ultimately prove, in 1992 at least, to be futile attempts at revolution. For Now and Forever examines the 1992 coup attempts.Like many South American countries, Venezuela has had something of a tumultuous history, the modern independent state being born in 1830 following a series of revolutions and wars against Spain and breaking away from Gran Columbia, with further civil wars and confrontation with European powers continuing into the early twentieth century. Politically, the country veered between various forms of democracy and dictatorship marred by occasion violence, and an attempted left wing revolutionary guerilla movement in the 1960s failed.Oil had been discovered in Venezuela in the early twentieth century and for a while brought prosperity to the country. Following the global oil crisis of 1973 oil prices soared and Venezuela borrowed heavily on this basis; when in the 1980s oil prices crashed, so did Venezuela's economy. Growing discontent led to the Caracazo riots in 1989 that were brutally put down by the security forces leaving hundreds of dead protesters. Many junior officers in the military had long sought reform and revolution. Cultivated by future president Hugo Ch vez and the MBR-200 (Bolivarian Revolutionary Movement-200), the events of 1989 provided a spark to action that would lead to two attempts to conduct military coups in 1992 to overthrow President Carlos Andr s P rez Rodr guez. For Now and Forever provides a detailed two-volume military history of the 1992 coup attempts. This second volume picks up the story of the February 1992 coup attempt from Volume 1 and examines the failure and consequences of that attempt, and moves on to examine the second coup attempt in November of the same year. This volume is illustrated throughout with original photographs of the events and includes the @War series' signature colour artworks and includes appendices detailing the aircraft of the contemporary Venezuelan Air Force.

The main object of this booklet is to provide to non-specialists the necessary information on the current energy situation and its effective management, thus helping the general public understand and participate in the decision making processes related to climate issues, environmental effects and sustainability aspects. At present, the situation on the use of energy is quite different in the OECD countries, like the European ones and the non-OECD countries. While in countries like China and India, the use of energy is expected to grow intensively, in the case of Europe, on the contrary, energy use is estimated to slowly decrease. Consequently, this report will focus mainly on the European situation. It is interesting to remark first that although the European economy represents about 22% of the world economy, Europe's emissions account for only 11%. However, it is an unfortunate fact that the influence of carbon emissions on global climate change is practically independent of the location where the emissions originate.

This book examines VOX, the first major and electorally successful populist radical right-wing party to emerge in Spain since the death of General Franco, and the restoration of parliamentary democracy in the late 1970s.In December 2018, VOX, a new party on the populist radical right, entered the Andalusian regional parliament, and played the role of kingmaker in the ensuing government formation discussions. Since then, under the leadership of Santiago Abascal, VOX has earned political representation in numerous local, regional and national elections. The party attracted more than 3.6 million votes in the November 2019 general election, making VOX the third largest party in the Spanish Congress. In two years, the party has become a key political challenger and an important player in Spanish politics. This book explains the origins of the party, its ideology and relationship with democracy, its appeal with voters, and its similarities with (and differences from) other populist radical right parties in Europe. It draws upon a rich source of domestic as well as cross-national survey data and a systematic analysis of party manifestos which provide a detailed account of the rise of VOX and what its emergence means for Spanish politics. This volume will be of interest to scholars of comparative politics, political parties, voters and elections, Spanish politics, the populist radical right and populism in general.

Jose Marti: Revolution, Politics and Letters: Volume I: Cuban Independence
José Martí occupies a central place in Latin American letters, and he is an unparalleled foundational figure in Cuban culture. Martí's writing shaped a hemispheric consciousness in the Americas, and as national poet and patriotic "apostle," he is revered by generations of Cubans everywhere. As essayist, journalist, and revolutionary, Martí fought for Cuban independence and helped defend the ideal of Latin American autonomy against empires old and new. This ground-breaking two-volume work offers the most comprehensive collection of Martí's prose work available in English. Where recent translations have offered selective anthologies of Martí's writing, this edition offers a key archive of essays, journalism, speeches, political documents, and historic correspondence, many translated for the first time. The first volume gathers essential texts and letters that have shaped Cuban history, nationalism, and political ideology, and shich challenged and defined the course of revolutionary struggle. The second volume offers a comprehensive selection of Martí's vision of the Americas, combining his reflections on Latin American history, culture and political economy, and his critical observations on the modernity and upheavals of the United States in the late nineteenth century. Volume One, Cuba: The Struggle for Independence includes two main sections. Just Wars and Revolutions represents Martí's writings about Spanish colonial oppression, Cuban insurrections and the independence wars, revealing his anxieties about revolutionary organization and leadership, and his reflections on military power, civil society, and nationalist struggle. Building the Patria in Exile reflects Martí's efforts to build Cuban from exile, and his exhortation that the patria should be founded on secular institutions, republican ideals and social enfranchisement and not merely political or military expediency. The selections reflect his concerns about U.S. imperialism and annexationist designs, his engagement and dialogue with educational and beneficent organizations, his focus on women as builders and mothers of the nation, and his crafting of a national genealogy of poets and heroes.

This book is a critical study of visual representations of José Martí The National Hero of Cuba , and the discourses of power that make it possible for Martí's images to be perceived as icons today. It argues that an observer of Martí's icons who is immersed in the Cuban national narrative experiences a retrospective reconstruction of those images by means of ideologically formed national discourses of power. Also, the obsessive reproduction of Martí's icons signals a melancholia for the loss of the martyr-hero. But instead of attempting to "forget Martí," the book concludes that the utopian impulse of his memory should serve to resist melancholia and to visualize new forms of creative re-significations of Martí and, by extension, the nation.
