Jude the Obscure, the last completed novel by Thomas Hardy, began as a magazine serial in December 1894 and was first published in book form in 1895. Its protagonist, Jude Fawley, is a working-class young man, a stonemason, who dreams of becoming a scholar. The other main character is his cousin, Sue Bridehead, who is also his central love interest. The novel is concerned in particular with issues of class, education, religion and marriage. Jude the Obscure is an angry book, and a deeply radical one. To write it, Hardy went further into himself than ever before, exposed his deepest feelings and was creatively wounded by the hostility of the response to what one critic called "the most indecent book ever written".

Der Munchener Rechtsanwalt Max Hirschberg ist von Anfang an Anhanger der Weimarer Republik. Rasch wird er zum gesuchten Strafverteidiger, besonders in politischen Fallen. Werner Max Finkelstein wurde 1925 in Gumbinnen (Ostpreussen) geboren. Mit zehn Jahren zog er nach Berlin und verließ Deutschland 1939 mit einem Kindertransport in Richtung Schweden. Als Fünfzehnjähriger machte er sich alleine auf die abenteuerliche Reise, um per Schiff und Bahn zu seiner inzwischen in Bolivien lebenden Mutter zu gelangen. Hier schlug er sich einige Jahre als Krokodiljäger, Gefängnisaufseher und Minenarbeiter durch. 1948 gelangte er über die "grüne Grenze" nach Argentinien. Er wurde Journalist und leitete auch in den Zeiten der Militärdiktatur und Hyperinflation die letzte deutsch-sprachige Emigrantenzeitung Lateinamerikas. In der Redaktion lernte er sein 49 Jahre jüngere Frau kennen, mit der er nach sechs Jahrzehnten der Emigration endlich nach Berlin zurückkehrte.
