Salvific space is one of the central ideas in the Hindu traditions of pilgrimage, and concerns the ability of space, especially sites associated with bodies of water such as rivers and lakes, to grant salvific rewards. Focusing on religious, historical and sociological questions about the phenomenon, this book investigates the narratives, rituals, history and structures of salvific space, and looks at how it became a central feature of Hinduism.Arguing that salvific power of place became a major dimension of Hinduism through a development in several stages, the book analyses the historical process of how salvific space and pilgrimage in the Hindu tradition developed. It discusses how the traditions of salvific space exemplify the decentred polycentrism that defines Hinduism. The book uses original data from field research, as well as drawing on main textual sources such as Mahabharata, the Pura?as, the medieval digests on pilgrimage places (tirthas), and a number of Sthalapura?as and Mahatmyas praising the salvific power of the place. By looking at some of the contradictions in and challenges to the tradition of Hindu salvific space in history and in contemporary India, the book is a useful study on Hinduism and South Asian Studies.

This book is about the importance of animal size. We tend to think of animal function in chemical terms and talk of water, salts, proteins, enzymes, oxygen, energy, and so on. We should not forget, however, that physical laws are equally important, for they determine rates of diffusion and heat transfer, transfer of force and momentum, the strength of structures, the dynamics of locomotion, and other aspects of the functioning of animal bodies. Physical laws provide possibilities and opportunities for an organism, yet they also impose constraints, setting limits to what is physically possible. This book aims to give an understanding of these rules because of their profound implications when we deal with animals of widely different size and scale. The reader will find that the book raises many questions. Remarkable and puzzling information makes it read a little like a detective story, but the last chapter, instead of giving the final solution, neither answers all questions nor provides one great unifying principle.

New edition of J.S. Scott's 1924 English translation of Children of the Age (original title: B rn av Tiden) by Knut Hamsun, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920. Hamsun described it as "a novel about the war between the aristocrat and the peasant." The Encyclopedia of the Novel (2014) called it "a historically based--and utterly scathing--critique of modernity." And the Hamsun Centre (Hamsunsenteret) website wrote: "In Children of the Age a family's rise and fall are used to describe the decline and fall of a whole epoch. Thematically the novel has similarities to Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks (1901), with Hamsun's humour being the stylistic difference between the two." Children of the Age was a commercial success when it was first published in Norway in 1913. Isaac Anderson, writing in The Literary Digest International Book Review (1924), described it as "Hamsun's art at its best," and, while concluding that was "not so great a novel as Growth of the Soil," it had the same epic quality, and "deserves, and undoubtedly will have, a high place among the novels of our time." This new edition is not simply a scan of the original. It has been completely reformatted and redesigned. Spelling errors and other typos that appeared in the original Alfred A. Knopf edition have been corrected.

Scott's 1925 English translation of Segelfoss Town (original title: Segelfoss By) by Knut Hamsun, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920.Segelfoss Town was first published in Norway in 1915 and is an independent continuation of Hamsun's Children of the Age, published two years earlier. The novel is a criticism of modern times, depicting the fall of the landed gentry and the rise of the working class. Segelfoss Town and its predecessor were the first of Hamsun's novels devoted to social issues. The two novels are described by Monika Zagar in Knut Hamsun: The Dark Side of Literary Brilliance (2009) as "much more than dry social analysis; indeed, they investigate, in rich novelistic form, the propagation and survival of a family."
