Soviet Adventures in the Land of the Capitalists

In 1935, two Soviet satirists, Ilia Ilf and Evgeny Petrov, undertook a 10,000 mile American road trip from New York to Hollywood and back accompanied only by their guide and chauffeur, a gregarious Russian Jewish immigrant and his American-born, Russian-speaking wife. They immortalized their journey in a popular travelogue that condemned American inequality and racism even as it marvelled at American modernity and efficiency. Lisa Kirschenbaum reconstructs the epic journey of the two Soviet funnymen and their encounters with a vast cast of characters, ranging from famous authors, artists, poets and filmmakers to unemployed hitchhikers and revolutionaries. Using the authors' notes, US and Russian archives, and even FBI files, she reveals the role of ordinary individuals in shaping foreign relations as Ilf, Petrov and the immigrants, communists, and fellow travelers who served as their hosts, guides, and translators became creative actors in cultural exchange between the two countries.

Long-term Care, Globalization, and Justice

Long-term Care, Globalization, and Justice

Lisa A. Eckenwiler

Long-term care can be vexing on a personal as well as social level, and it will only grow more so as individuals continue to live longer and the population of aged persons increases in the United States and around the world. This volume explores the ethical issues surrounding elder care from an ecological perspective to propose a new theory of global justice for long-term care. Care work is organized not just nationally, as much current debate suggests, but also transnationally, through economic, labor, immigration, and health policies established by governments, international lending bodies, and for-profit entities. Taking an epistemological approach termed "ecological knowing", Lisa A. Eckenwiler examines this organizational structure to show how it creates and sustains injustice against the dependent elderly and those who care for them, including a growing number of migrant care workers, and how it weakens the capacities of so-called source countries and their health care systems. By focusing on the fact that a range of policies, people, and places are interrelated and mutually dependent, Eckenwiler is able not only to provide a holistic understanding of the way long-term care works to generate injustice but also to find ethical and practicable policy solutions for caring for aging populations in the United States and in less well-off parts of the world. Deeply considered and empirically informed, this examination of the troubles in transnational long-term care is the first to probe the issue from a perspective that reckons with the interdependence of policies, people, and places, and the first to recommend ways policymakers, planners, and families can together develop cohesive, coherent long-term care policies around the ideal of justice.

Rising numbers of young children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders means more students with ASD entering pre-school and the elementary grades. For these young learners, individualized instruction toward measurable goals is crucial to effective education. The COMPASS program—Collaborative Model for Promoting Competence and Success for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders—has been developed to improve outcomes for these students in the unique context of their lives. Collaborative Model for Promoting Competence and Success for Students with ASD builds consulting and ASD knowledge competencies while working with families and teachers in a systematic, empirically supported consultation program. The book offers a framework for individualized assessment and program planning based in students’ life experiences along with family and teacher input. At the same time, its two-tiered consultation/coaching strategy is designed to minimize the setbacks that occur even in optimal family and classroom situations. Protocols, scripts, forms, and case examples are included for a complete guide to facilitating successful learning. Featured in the text:Theory and rationale behind COMPASS.Self-evaluation tools for assessing core skills and competencies.Guidelines for writing effective Individual Education Programs and the COMPASS Action Plan.Detailed instructions for implementing Action Plans and monitoring progress.Case studies of the COMPASS program in real-life situations. A complete kit of forms, scales, and checklists. Practitioners working with children with ASD, particularly in child and school psychology, special education, rehabilitation, social work, speech pathology, and developmental psychology, will find in Collaborative Model for Promoting Competence and Success for Students with ASD a consultation model that empowers teachers, families, and above all, students.
Non-Elite Women in Early Imperial Rome
New trends in iconographic and epigraphic analyses have begun to question traditional views of non-elites in the Roman world. Through an investigation of the representation of non-elite women in funerary monuments in early Imperial Rome this work illustrates how women's roles in funerary rites go beyond the traditional functions of mourners and lamenters. How were non-elite women perceived as members of Roman society during and after the reign of Augustus? More specifically what legal and funerary or cultic obligations were they performing? Do these obligations go hand in hand with a traditional value and belief system held by the freeborn ruling elite? This project shows that how the non-elite presented themselves was meant to invoke responses from a broader community that incorporated slaves as well as freeborn individuals of a similar economic standing as opposed to only the freeborn elite. The project focuses on an analysis of 350 examples of funerary monuments from Italy that incorporate portraiture, subsidiary scenes and inscriptions. These monuments lined the major thoroughfares that led into the cities and acted as a new and innovative means for non-elite women to proclaim familial relations within the spheres of Roman law and religion.
