Ludwig Hirdes (1750-1814) was born in the small town of Breuna in Hessen-Kassel (Germany). He was baptized in the Christian Protestant church. He learned the blacksmith trade from his father. The army drafted Ludwig, and he was one of thousands of Hessian troops shipped across the Atlantic Ocean to help the British fight against the American Patriots and French in the Revolutionary War. Ludwig's regiment (Rall) fought many successful battles along the east coast. But at Trenton, NJ, in 1776 American Patriot Gen. George Washington's frozen army crossed the Delaware River, surprised and defeated the Hessians. Six years later, Ludwig was on garrison duty in Charleston, SC. He and two comrades risked their lives to desert the army. They fled to a German community near Charlotte, NC. Ludwig married and started a new life as Lewis Hartis. He and his wife, Elizabeth, raised ten children. He owned a big farm and was active in church and community. This book was published 200 years after his death.
Ludwig II - the Fairy Tale King - was King of Bavaria from 1864 until his mysterious death. He succeeded to the throne aged 18. Two years later Bavaria was effectively absorbed into the German Empire. Ludwig remained King of Bavaria, but largely ignored such state affairs as remained to Bavaria in favor of extravagant artistic and architectural projects. He commissioned the construction of two lavish palaces and the Neuschwanstein Castle, and was a devoted patron of the composer Richard Wagner. Ludwig spent the royal revenues (but not state funds) on these projects, borrowed extensively, and defied all attempts by his ministers to restrain him. This was used against him to declare him insane, an accusation which has since been refuted, and this led to his mysterious death. Was it suicide, an accident or a murder? Ludwig is well-regarded and even revered by many Bavarians today. His legacy of architecture and art includes many of Bavaria's important tourist attractions. Illustrated.
The German-American architect, art critic, and urban planner Ludwig Hilberseimer was central to avant-garde art and architecture in the Weimar Republic, an important Bauhaus teacher, and long-standing collaborator of leading modern architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.Despite being internationally-known for his work on Lafayette Park in Detroit, Hilberseimer’s legacy as a whole has been obscured in the history of modern architecture. Whether this is due to the intense shadow cast by Mies, or by his oeuvre being split between the differing languages and contexts of interwar Germany and postwar North America, this book argues that the time is now right for a critical reassessment of Hilberseimer’s work and writings.Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which brings to light the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, this study clarifies and situates Hilberseimer’s ideas both as an architect and writer, and examines their influence on modern and contemporary architecture and urbanism. The first synthetic account of Hilberseimer in English, it provides a contextual account of Hilberseimer’s works which have until now been subject to fragmentary or highly specialized interpretations. By demonstrating the influence of Hilberseimer’s ideas on the architecture of Mies van der Rohe, the book also lends Mies’s work a newfound urban significance.
