Där verkar fritt tänkande och kloka föräldrar i strävsamhet och stundernas glädje. De tar barnen på allvar och möter dem med respekt och humor. Frida Mannela Ågrens berättelse ger oss anledning att ställa en svårbesvarad fråga: Hur kommer det sig att vissa människor föds "fria" och förblir opåverkade av andras fördomar? Mariannes mor är liksom författaren sjösame från Manndalen i Nordnorge. De bor i Sveriges nordligaste y Keinovuopio, men hon känner hela livet stark samhörighet med sin mors sjösamiska ursprung och kulturmiljö. Hennes familj erkänns dock inte som "samisk" därav bokens undertitel. I hemmet talas både norska, finska, svenska och nordsamiska. Lilla Mariannes minnen av skoltiden på "arbetsstugan" i Karesuando, där hon inackorderas som sjuåring, är färgklara och detaljrika. "Lapp ska vara Lapp" var länge denna skolforms motto. Men det är ingen som Marianne upplever. I Keinovuopio är man inte i första hand samer, finnar, norrmän, eller svenskar .Där är man individer med förtjänster och svagheter utan rangordning efter härkomst. Men i skolan och internatet mäts man mot ett svenskt rättesnöre. När de aningslösa barnet utsätts för överhetens maktutövande uppstår dråpliga scener. Läsaren upprörs och skrattar om vartannat. Marianne iakttar, förbryllas, reflekterar, brusar upp, inser sin maktlöshet och anpassar sig i vardagen-men gör motstånd när det krävs. Här spelar stödet vänner emellan och från föräldrar och släktingar stor roll. det kan ingen fröken, präst, eller doktor ta ur henne. Although historians have written extensively on propaganda during Napoleon III's regime and Vichy, they have virtually ignored the Third Republic. Focusing on Third Republic policies, this volume suggests that American's long-lasting affair with French culture is no accident. Robert J. Young argues that the French used subtle but effective means to influence US policy in Europe. He examines French propaganda efforts and the methods of the French Foreign Ministry, always highlighting the wider cultural and social context of Franco-American relations. French propagandists believed that the steady promotion of their nation as the cultural capital of the world was the best way to foster goodwill among Americans. They slowly recognized the important role the United States played in maintaining the balance of power in Europe. Young argues that the French deliberately exploited America's sense of cultural inferiority when faced with Europe's rich heritage, and the rise of new technologies and modern forms of government in France encouraged the development of more sophisticated forms of propaganda.

Victoria Benedictsson har kallats 1880-talets geni och "hjältinna i en tragedi". Hon efterlämnade en liten men tungt vägande prosaproduktion, som hon skrev under pseudonymen Ernst Ahlgren. Intresset för hennes författarskap och person har aldrig minskat. Fru Marianne från 1887 handlar om Marianne, den bortskämda storstadskvinnan som gifter sig med Börje och blir bondhustru på den skånska ladnsbygden. Det är en roman om kärlekens irrvägar och samtidigt en rik karaktärsskildring av en kvinna som växer till insikt om kärlekens krav. Boken filmades för tv av Carin Mannheimer 2001, med Cecilia Frode och Per Morberg i huvudrollerna.
