Education as the Practice of Eco-Social-Cultural Change

Education as the Practice of Eco-Social-Cultural Change

Mark Fettes; Sean Blenkinsop

Springer International Publishing AG
2023

The current ecological crisis is the consequence of entrenched attitudes, discourses and behaviours in human societies worldwide, fostered and reinforced through modern educational traditions, processes and institutions. This book envisions a radical transformation of education to focus on the mutual flourishing of human societies with the rest of life on Earth. In part, the authors suggest approaching this as a problem of systemic design, incorporating principles that challenge and undermine key premises of the Capitalocene—the socio-economic-political landscape sustaining the current educational regime. Tracing the implications of this transition, they review core assumptions of modern Western culture that need to shift, and identify a wide range of relevant capacities and practices grouped under four complementary educator “stances” for eco-social-cultural change.

Development And Demographic Change In Taiwan (1945-1995)

Development And Demographic Change In Taiwan (1945-1995)

Roger Mark Selya

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd

This book describes and analyzes the demographic changes that took place in Taiwan between 1945 and 1995. It uses an interdisciplinary methodology so that different approaches to demographic change can be compared and contrasted. It attempts to evaluate Taiwan's experience so that lessons for the Third World can be extracted. The content and presentation of the material are deliberately designed to replicate the 1954 work of Barclay, Demographic Change and Colonial Development in Taiwan. As such the book seeks to provide the reasons that economic development without demographic change took place under the Japanese while development with demographic change took place under the Chinese. The volume is richly illustrated with some 82 original maps and graphs.
Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime
The gripping inside story of the 2008 presidential election, by two of the best political reporters in the country."It's one of the best books on politics of any kind I've read. For entertainment value, I put it up there with Catch 22." --The Financial Times"It transports you to a parallel universe in which everything in the National Enquirer is true....More interesting is what we learn about the candidates themselves: their frailties, egos and almost super-human stamina." --The Financial Times"I can't put down this book " --Stephen ColbertGame Change is the New York Times bestselling story of the 2008 presidential election, by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, two of the best political reporters in the country. In the spirit of Richard Ben Cramer's What It Takes and Theodore H. White's The Making of the President 1960, this classic campaign trail book tells the defining story of a new era in American politics, going deeper behind the scenes of the Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin campaigns than any other account of the historic 2008 election.

Indigenous Political Hierarchy and Sustainable Collective Meaning in the Changin

Indigenous Political Hierarchy and Sustainable Collective Meaning in the Changin

The legitimacy of Cameroon Grassfields' traditional government rested on mythic power origin, construction and spirituality. Endowed with transcendence that emanated from the primordial past, the sacred assignment of this indigenous political hierarchy exudes through conscious sustainable actions of collective existence, opportunities, benefits and development. But this determining value of societal control, concord, development and shape was soon lost to eccentric polemics. The selections in this volume, all by Grassfielders, present dynamic articulation of the struggle of the hierarchy with the dictates of time; dictates depicted by colonial, post independent and contemporary rudiments. They emphasize the unadulterated sacred purpose, value and role of sustained collectivism and development expos which the indigenous government made patent before their sudden loss to foreign domination, control and expectations. The shoveling of this negative vibrant process is the contributors' own reassessment of the place of their principal institutions in the fast mutating society, the revitalization of their heritage, the reaffirmation of the meaningful politico-cultural rights, the reversion to, and re-establishment of, a real indigenous hegemony over the nature and influence of the region's collective being and development.

Land Degradation, Desertification and Climate Change

Land Degradation, Desertification and Climate Change

Although much is known about the processes and effects of land degradation and climate change, little is understood about the links between them. Less still is known about how these processes are likely to interact in different social-ecological systems around the world, or how societies might be able to adapt to this twin challenge. This book identifies key vulnerabilities to the combined effects of climate change and land degradation around the world. It identifies triple-win adaptations that can tackle both climate change and land degradation, whilst supporting biodiversity and ecosystem services. The book discusses methods for monitoring effects of climate change and land degradation, and adaptations to these processes. It argues for better co-operation and knowledge exchange, so that the research, land user and policy communities can work together more effectively to tackle these challenges, harnessing the "wisdom of crowds" to assess vulnerability and adapt to climate change and land degradation, whilst protecting livelihoods and biodiversity.
