The Alexander Technique is a method of muscular re-education, which has become standard training for actors, dancers and singers, and is practised for health reasons all over the world. Its founder, Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869-1955), was an Australian actor who stumbled upon it in the 1890s after studying himself in mirrors to discover why he had lost his voice. He realised that most people suffered from the same postural defects he had noticed in himself, and that this explained much of what went wrong with them. F.M. (as he was known) came to London in 1904 and became enormously successful. During the First World War he practised in America with equal success, converting the American philosopher John Dewey to his cause. He wrote four books (all still in print), and his supporters included Aldous Huxley, George Bernard Shaw and Stafford Cripps. He was, however, a difficult and argumentative man who made enemies. Towards the end of his life he embarked on a libel action against the South African government, which had accused him of charlatanism. He won, and went on practising and propagating his technique until his death aged 86.

In this volume Arie Zwiep examines the character and purpose of the Judas-Matthias pericope in Acts 1:15-26 in the wider context of Jewish, Graeco-Roman and early Christian traditions on the death of the wicked in terms of divine retribution. Through a comprehensive analysis of form and function of the pericope in its historical and literary context, this study seeks to discern the distinctly Lukan perspective in the light of first-century reflection on the figure of Judas Iscariot, the role of the Twelve in the earliest Christian communities, and current eschatological expectations that have coloured Luke's narrative presentation. Special consideration is given to the concurrent versions of Judas' death in Matthew 27:3-10 and the writings of Papias.

Der B chernachlass des Dichters und Schriftstellers Matthias Claudius (1740-1815) wurde nach dem Tod seiner Witwe Rebecca (1754-1832) aufgel st. Ein Teil der B cher wurde von den Claudius-Kindern als Eigentum bernommen, der Rest kam 1834 in Altona zur Auktion. Der Katalog zur Altonaer Auktion erschien 1833 in Hamburg und verzeichnete verschiedene B chersammlungen, darunter als dritte die von Claudius. Als Ausschnitt aus dem Katalog sind die Bl tter dieser "Dritten Sammlung", die Aufschluss ber den B cherbesitz des Dichters geben, im Claudius-Bestand des Staatsarchivs Hamburg verwahrt, wo sie bisher in archivalischer Verborgenheit geschlummert haben. Mit der vorliegenden Reprintausgabe werden sie nun frei zug nglich gemacht. Der Vorbericht des Herausgebers befasst sich mit Inhalt und Umfang des Verzeichnisses, sowie mit der Frage, wo Claudius neben seinem eigenen, f r einen Literaten recht bescheidenen B cherbesitz fremde B cherbest nde nutzen konnte, was nachweislich der Fall gewesen ist.
