Miriam O'Callaghan

I started writing this book as an exclusively work memoir but the work and the personal kept overlapping. I don’t know if that’s because I’m a woman or a mother or both, or none of those reasons. I just know that for my story to be authentic and truthful, I couldn’t simply focus on the work side of my life.Miriam O'Callaghan is one of Ireland's best-known broadcasters, covering every election, referendum, major controversy and important public event for TV, and hosting an award-winning radio show. Combining career success, high-octane glamour and being a mother-of-eight makes her a truly unique figure in Irish public life.In her absorbing memoir, Miriam shares touching stories from her personal life – from the life-changing impact of losing her beloved sister and father in a matter of months, and the end of her first marriage that same year, to the joys and challenges of bringing eight children into the world and juggling a frenetically busy life (‘give up on perfection’ is her wise advice!).Miriam includes fascinating insights into a career that has given her a ringside seat to a changing Ireland. Like attending Bobby Sands’ wake even before she was a journalist, and life coming full circle when she championed John Hume to be declared the greatest figure in Irish history. She describes extraordinary debates, important and heart-breaking conversations with people in the eye of a media storm, and how she goes after and prepares for the big interviews – as well as what happens when things go wrong. Miriam also addresses the recent RTÉ controversies that cast a shadow over its high-profile presenters, not least herself.Miriam is an exceptionally honest and personal memoir from one of Ireland’s most esteemed broadcasters

Miriam Ferguson was a quiet, private person who preferred to stay home in her big house in Temple, Texas, and take care of her husband, raise her two daughters, and tend to her flower garden. But in 1923 she was elected governor of Texas, the first women governor elected in the United States. Her husband, Jim Ferguson, served two terms as governor, but during his second term he was impeached, which meant he could not run again for public office. So Miriam agreed to run to clear his name and restore the family's honor. She served two terms as governor: from 1925 to 1927 and from 1933 to 1935. She and her husband became known as ""Ma"" and ""Pa"" Ferguson. Her campaign slogan was, ""Two Governors for the Price of One.

Miriam Zadek shares her story in this memoir that documents her experiences growing up in a New York Jewish family with both deaf and hearing members from the 1930s through World War II and beyond. Her story is personal and reflective, revealing the sometimes complex and heart-rending dynamics within her family and her community. Through brief and evocative vignettes, Zadek relates her memories of family life, capturing the innocence of childhood, the confusion of adolescence, and then progressing through adulthood. Her recollections evolve from a childlike observance to awareness, pain, and understanding as she matures. Throughout this journey, the author presents a narrative of historical and cultural importance centered on her personal account of the lives of deaf and hearing Jewish people in the mid-twentieth century. The prevailing ideological movements of the time permeate her family life. Zadek reveals the traumatic impact of eugenics and the fears surrounding the genetic transmission of deafness. She considers the effects of adhering to the oral method of communication in her home when sign language could have given her family the ability to interact with each other more fully. In this environment, Zadek became an astute communicator and learned to adapt to both the hearing and the deaf world, where she was known as "Miriam Hearing Sister." Her memoir is an elegant literary work that offers an understanding of how biases and stigmas resonate and evolve, and it showcases her loving family of strong women who pushed against stereotypes and have thrived across generations.

Out of tragedy comes a miracle...Miriam's miracle This medical memoir is wrapped in a love story like no other, demonstrating God's love throughout the most desperate moments and a husband's unwavering and decades-long devotion to his wife. Imagine experiencing a work-related injury that spirals into decades of life-altering pain and suffering. Imagine fighting a system that seems stacked against you. And imagine a husband-turned-advocate who documents the ordeal, sharing the raw details of an uphill climb through the halls of medicine and courtrooms. As a wife, mother, and employee, Miriam Johnson's nightmare began with a slip-and-fall accident that set her husband and nine-year-old son on a trajectory of caregiving that they never could have imagined. The Johnson family's story is love personified - a transcendent and stubborn love made possible by faith, courage, and God's ultimate timing. Miraculously, Miriam recovered well after her son was grown and had a family of his own. Her husband, Mark, lovingly recounts the "then" and "now" and shares his dear wife's victory over impossible odds.
