Part One of this book is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted by the author during 1970-72 on a local branch of the Muhammadiyah in the town of Kotagede, a suburb of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This work, first published in 1983, observed that the Muhammadiyah social and educational movement had reformed traditional Javanese Islam into a vital living faith and adapted Muslim life to modernity. The author was one of the first scholars who had noted that there was continuing Islamisation in Indonesia and predicted its progress in the future. Part Two is based on the author's three decades of follow-up visits to the Kotagede from the 1970s to 2010. During this period, the Muhammadiyah movement made enormous advancements, enough to make the town known as a ""Muhammadiyah town"". On the national level, the Muhammadiyah has grown to be the second largest Islamic civil society organisation (after the traditionalist Nahdlatul Ulama) in Indonesia, with millions of members and supporters. Yet, the wider environment for it has been altered greatly by urbanisation, diversification and globalisation. It is also facing unprecedented challenges arising from calls for democratisation in the post-Soeharto era. The longitudinal study in this volume depicts the most recent dynamics of the Muhammadiyah movement in a local as well as transhistoric context.

This book presents multi-regional input-output tables from the prefectural level as well as non-survey methods for creating the tables that divide a prefecture into sub-regions—into municipalities, for instance. In this book, the reader will find a survey of Japan's multilayered input–output tables and the research employing them, with an explanation of how to compile and apply a multi-regional input–output table for the country’s economy. Also included is research on currently important topics in municipal economies, carried out by municipality-based input–output analysis. Many input–output tables already have been compiled for each of the 47 prefectures of Japan as well as for major municipalities such as ordinance-designated cities, i.e., with populations greater than 500,000. The input–output table, or “benchmark table”, for the entire country, which is jointly compiled by 10 ministries and agencies including the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, provides the essential information for the compilation of regional input-output tables. In recent years, there has been a great deal of interest in the estimation of municipality-based input–output tables to help provide perspective for regional economic revitalization and evidence-based policymaking. This book, with its information on how to create and apply multiregional input–output tables, is useful for graduate students, researchers, and local government officials who are concerned with this field.
This is an introduction to the Japanese economy. The general feature of the Japanese economy, together with its historical and geographical background, is first described. Its famous rapid economic growth in the 1960s are then analyzed quantitatively in the light of the econometric findings. The facts on the saving ratio, trade balances, technical progress, industrial structure, business cycles, economic development and so on are presented, and their relation to the economic performance are discussed. The elementary economic concepts and theories are also explained with illustrations from the Japanese economy, so that the book may be easily accessible to the general readers. The readers of the book will acquire a bird's-eye view of the Japanese economy and the theoretical elucidation of its special features.

Joseph Kitagawa, one of the founders of the field of history of religions and an eminent scholar of the religions of Japan, published his classic book Religion in Japanese History in 1966. Since then, he has written a number of extremely influential essays that illustrate approaches to the study of Japanese religious phenomena. To date, these essays have remained scattered in various scholarly journals. This book makes available nineteen of these articles, important contributions to our understanding of Japan's intricate combination of indigenous Shinto, Confucianism, Taoism, the Yin-Yang School, Buddhism, and folk religion. In sections on prehistory, the historic development of Japanese religion, the Shinto tradition, the Buddhist tradition, and the modem phase of the Japanese religious tradition, the author develops a number of valuable methodological approaches. The volume also includes an appendix on Buddhism in America. Asserting that the study of Japanese religion is more than an umbrella term covering investigations of separate traditions, Professor Kitagawa approaches the subject from an interdisciplinary standpoint. Skillfully combining political, cultural, and social history, he depicts a Japan that seems a microcosm of the religious experience of humankind.
