The Sociology of Norbert Elias

Norbert Elias has been described as a great sociologist and over recent years there has been a steady upsurge of interest in his work. Yet despite the fact that he was active for nearly sixty years from the 1920s to the 1960s it was only in the 1980s that English translations of his works became widely available and the importance of his contribution to the sociological endeavour was fully recognised in the English speaking world. This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the key aspects of Elias's work and then applies an Eliasian approach to key topics in contemporary sociology such as race, class, gender, religion, epistemology and nationalism. The editors have brought together a distinguished group of international sociologists and this book will not only change the course of Elias studies but be a valuable resource for both students and scholars alike.

This book contains lectures presented at the MIT symposium on the 100th anniversary of Norbert Wiener's birth held in October 1994. The topics reflect Wiener's main interests while emphasizing current developments. In addition to lectures dealing directly with problems on which Wiener worked, such as potential theory, harmonic analysis, Wiener-Hopf theory, and Paley-Wiener theory, the book discusses the following topics: Fourier integral operators with complex phase (a contemporary successor to the Paley-Wiener theory); statistical aspects of quantum mechanics and of liquid crystals; financial markets, including the new trading strategies for options based on Wiener processes; statistical methods of genetic research; and, models of the nervous system, pattern recognition, and the nature of intelligence. The volume includes reviews on Norbert Wiener's contributions from historical and current perspectives. This book gives mathematical researchers an overview of new mathematical problems presented by other areas and gives researchers in other fields a broad overview of the ways in which advanced mathematics might be useful to them.

Helena Tarnowicz-Barlicka was born in Warsaw in 1894, one of eight children in a large, traditional upper middle-class Polish family. With the outbreak of WWI in 1914, the family found itself stranded in Moscow, and with the outbreak of the Russian Revolution, they did not return to Poland until 1918. Helena relentlessly pursued her dream of becoming a physician. She started her studies in Moscow in 1917, but it was not until 1925 in Warsaw that she finally graduated. The most important person in her life outside of her family was Norbert Barlicki, the Polish publicist, lawyer and politician of the Polish Socialist Party (PPS) who was executed by the Germans during the Second World War. The testament by Helena is brief but evocative. It speaks for itself. It gives us insight into the character and mindset of Norbert Barlicki, but even more so, insight into what an extraordinary individual was Helena herself. Paperback, Illustr., 52 pp. with facsimile of original manuscript (in Polish).

The Anthem Companion to Norbert Elias
The book presents an authoritative assessment of Norbert Elias (1897–1990). It recognizes Elias as one of the major contributors to the development of sociological tradition in the past century and charts the continuing relevance of his conception of sociology for contemporary society. Only toward the end of his career as an academic did Elias’s work begin to attract the attention of English-speaking sociologists, historians, and scholars of cultural studies. The book provides an authoritative and broad representation of Elias’s oeuvre and work inspired by it. While Elias is best known for his major study of The Civilizing Process, the reach and subtle depths of Elias’s conception of process sociology has been cemented more recently by the English-language publication of Elias’s collected work of 18 volumes. The baton of process sociology is being passed on to further generations of sociologists. Chapters from leading contributors outline the nature of the sociological practice of Elias and address fundamental questions of historical sociology, democratization, gender, racialization processes, and embodiment. Later chapters highlight the contribution of process sociology for understanding developments in nation, state and global sociology, criminology, art, and education.
