Few people can claim that they attended elementary school at an art museum. However, before the building at 22-25 Jackson Avenue became part of New York City's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), it functioned as P.S.1--Public School 1--for the children of Long Island City. Originally, it was named the First Ward School when the city was independent and divided into wards or sections. In 1898 when Long Island City became part of New York City, the school was renamed P.S.1. MoMA PS1's previous life as the largest elementary school in Long Island City and later Queens, began in 1893. As the population grew to 40,000, the dilapidated rented buildings used as classrooms were no longer sufficient. Many children were unable to attend school due to lack of space. Original plans for the new school called for 22 classrooms. They were quickly reconfigured into 34 smaller rooms to accommodate one thousand students.

This book brings together twenty of the most important papers by the late Professor Peter Rolfe Vaughan on geotechnical engineering. Selected by Peter's closest colleagues at Imperial College and the Geotechnical Consulting Group, these papers are reproduced along with the obituary published in Géotechnique, a full listing of his bibliography, some photographs and personal reflections by David Hight, David Potts, Nebojša Kovacevic and Finlay Jardine on working with Peter. The papers were chosen to illustrate Peter's academic work and his considerable impact on civil engineering practice. Many of the papers were awarded distinguished prizes and some are drawn from sources that are now hard to access. The volume will be valued by researchers, practitioners and all those who studied or worked with Peter.T

Louise Harrington's ten-year marriage ended for reasons she has yet to fathom even four years later. At thirty-eight she is as confused about the men in her life as she was at seventeen. So, when the double of her high-school sweetheart appears in her life, she can't tell if she's gone mad, if it's a joke or a miracle. When her best friend Missy gets involved (it has taken Louise years to forgive her for stealing him in the first place) history begins to repeat itself...
From humble beginnings in the 1830s, The Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company grew to dominate British mercantile shipping for much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Initially, the company's paddle steamers carried Her Majesty's Mail to the Iberian Peninsula, as the name implies, but over time P&O extended its routes across the Mediterranean and onwards to the Middle East, Far East and Australasia. Besides the mail, P&O liners carried bullion, silk, tea, and even opium as well as passengers. The company came to represent the British Empire at sea – but as the Empire waned and British travellers took to the air, so a golden age of travelling by sea came to an end. Ruth Artmonsky here delves into the P&O Heritage Collection to take a nostalgic glance astern at all those who travelled P&O.
