This book offers a re-evaluation of Ismene in Sophocles’ Antigone, challenging the traditional view of her as merely a foil to her sister, Antigone. Through a close analysis of key passages, it argues for a more nuanced understanding of Ismene’s character, emotions and motivations, asserting that she is as compelling and fully realised as Antigone. This work contributes to ongoing debates about classical texts and their reception, highlighting the need to re-examine canonical works with fresh perspectives. While Antigone has often been celebrated as heroic, Ismene is typically dismissed as timid and conventional. This book disrupts such interpretations, examining how the relationship between the sisters reveals deeper complexities. Engaging with contemporary interdisciplinary approaches, it explores how historical ideologies have shaped the understanding of Antigone. It situates Ismene within broader conversations about agency, individuality and the representation of women in classical literature.

Disabled women represent one of the most marginalised minority groups in the world, hence they are largely silent while their sexuality is ignored, suppressed, forbidden and buried underneath the carpet. Until recently, most of the Global Northern published literature on the subject of the sexuality of disabled women has predominantly been constructed from hearsay and second-hand narratives in studies which draw from the perspectives of parents, service providers and advocates, without much consultation of the relevant women. By facilitating the voice of disabled women in Zimbabwe and illuminating their experiences of sexuality, this book hopes to shift the experiences of sexuality of disabled women from the periphery of society to the fore.Disability and Sexuality in Zimbabwe presents original research on an issue that is thus far not found in local research data. Whilst addressing the paucity of literature on the subject, the book informs policy and practice and enhances the existing body of knowledge by making recommendations towards the development of a disability and sexuality framework that is rooted in the African context. This book is of interest to students and scholars of African studies, disability studies, sociology, psychology, social work, nursing, education studies, geography, women’s and gender studies and interdisciplinary studies. Additional audiences include a wide range of health, social care, and educational professionals and practitioners, as well donors, disabled people’s organisations, charities, government departments, NGOs, supranational organisations, and policy makers
The editors' intention in the production of this book was to provide a realistic picture of the present state of nursing. This has been presented from a number of different but inter-linked perspectives. The decades since the inception of the National Health Service have been ones of significant change, both in society at large and in the field of health care. The period has witnessed political, economic, social, scientific and technological change taking place ever more rapidly; whilst, in terms of health care, demand and expectations continue to increase apace. Nursing, throughout the period, has been influenced by, and has responded to, these prevailing influences, and continues to do so. Contributors to this volume have sought to examine in depth some of the current issues in nursing at the present time. Each chapter examines a specific issue in the current nursing context and is, therefore, capable of standing alone. But considered together the chapters enable many aspects of the current debate on, and development of, nursing to be seen as a whole. It is hoped that this book will serve two fundamental purposes. First, to stimulate debate and activity by all nurses in their particular sphere of influence, and in the wider world of nursing. Second, it aims to inform those undertaking pre-or post-registra tion nursing programmes and thus assist their understanding of the state of nursing.

Mobutu's political system, inaugurated in 1965 and lasting more than three decades, met all the characteristics of totalitarianism. This study shows that the failures and misdeeds of Mobutu's system were clear evidence that it lacked an African-centred vision and did not put the interests of the African people of Congo (formerly Zaire) at the centre of this political project. In this study Mobutu's political actions in the 1990s - mostly as they related to the National Sovereign Conference - are critically analyzed and found to be a deliberate attempt to obstruct the momentum of democracy for the African people of Congo. From an Afro centric standpoint, this obstruction is evidence of Mobutu's attempt to impede the search for harmony and peace by the Zairian people, and to reject the African-centred truth that without Ma'at (harmony) there is no understanding and no possible restoration of balance. Mobutu's Totalitarian Political System will be of interest to students and scholars of ethnic studies, political science and international relations.
