The beginnings of "the poetic Roland" were mostly penned in a Waco coffee shop in early 2002, then portions were scribbled in notebooks in train compartments all over Europe; and more were written in Japan. This multipart narrative fragment builds a fantasy frame for the mostly romantic, mostly sad, mostly sonnets which follow.

G. K. Chesterton once said of Rudyard Kipling that "he has not the patience to become part of anything." These poems reflect on the joys and troubles of the cosmopolitan life, and the hopes, fears, whimsies, and struggles that shape our paths home.
Empowering Communities through Archaeology and Heritage
Peter G. Gould seeks to identify the success factors associated with economic development projects within communities adjacent to archaeological or heritage sites, a growing interest among archaeologists and heritage managers. Typically, the success of site museums, tourism businesses, or crafts cooperatives is rarely reported on in scholarly literature or subjected to systematic study. This book addresses that gap. Gould argues that the success of community projects is inextricably linked to the mechanisms community members use to govern their project activities, and provides a much-needed assessment of the issues relating to community governance. Drawing together insights from economic analysis, political science, tourism scholarship, complexity scholarship, and the governance of non-profit enterprises, Gould suggests a model for community governance and illustrates the workings of that model through four case studies. Armed with this book’s theoretical foundation, heritage professionals will have practical approaches to consider when designing community economic development projects.

In this established textbook, Wallace provides a succinct overview of the European Reformation, interweaving the influential events of the religious reformation with the transformations of political institutions, socio-economic structures, gender relations and cultural values throughout Europe. Examining the European Reformation as a long-term process, he reconnects the classic 16th century religious struggles with the political and religious pressures confronting late medieval Christianity, and argues that the resolutions proposed by reformers such as Luther were not fully realised for most Christians until the early 18th century. This new edition features a brand new chapter on the Reformation from a global perspective, updated historiography, a new chronology, and updated material throughout, including on the interrelationship between religion and politics after 1648.The Long European Reformation provides an even-handed and detailed account of this complex topic, providing a clear overview that is perfect for undergraduate and postgraduate students of history and religious studies. New to this Edition:- New chapter on the Reformation in global perspective- Incorporates new perspectives and current debates on Luther and the place of the Reformation within Western history, including consideration of how people lived with their religious differences- Expanded conclusion with references to the 500th anniversary and religious continuities

Poems, mostly sonnets, written since the completion of my last collection. In these works, concrete imagery and metaphysical reflection serve as lenses to survey a number of durable realities. The progression from "Thinging" to "Thinking," as well as the philosophical nature of many of these poems, derives from the major intellectual adjustments that have resulted from my embrace of the Catholic faith and the metaphysical realism, best worked out by St. Thomas Aquinas, that follows naturally from that understanding. A brief annotated selection of 1995 poems provides some depth of field for the intellectual and poetic landscape here sketched.

A brief spiritual autobiography, centered on the author's conversion to Catholicism after a youth in Fundamentalism and years of academic and personal searching. The title comes from the Latin for "all and only," referring to the truths passed on to every generation of Christians in the Catholic faith, found in a tradition version of the Act of Faith: "DOMINE Deus, firma fide credo et confiteor omnia et singula quae sancta ecclesia Catholica proponit, quia tu, Deus, ea omnia revelasti, qui es aeterna veritas et sapientia quae nec fallere nec falli potest. In hac fide vivere et mori statuo." Amen.
Greene's Protective Groups in Organic Synthesis, 2 Volume Set
Integral, reliable, and comprehensive guidance for chemists performing the complex syntheses required for the formation and cleavage of protective groups Organic synthesis is the preparation and creation of organic compounds for use in natural products, pharmaceuticals, and other molecules. The synthesis of molecules having multiple functional groups often requires the use of ‘protective groups’ to achieve site selectivity in a chemical reaction within a molecule bearing multiple sites of reactivity. Protective groups are installed temporarily to prevent unwanted reactions at a particular site, while transforming a different functional group. Once they have served their function, they are removed to expose the original group. Without a thorough understanding of the methods required to install and remove them, the design of a synthesis of a molecule having multiple functional groups in most cases is effectively impossible. Greene’s Protective Groups in Organic Synthesis, 6th Edition is the definitive compilation of protective groups, their classification, and their application in a wide array of situations. With a long tradition of comprehensive coverage, organized on the basis of the functional group in need of protection and subsequent deprotection, it is an essential reference and resource for all chemists involved in organic syntheses. Now fully updated to reflect the current state of the art, it remains an indispensable resource for generating life-changing organic products. This edition contains a new chapter on how protective groups effect reactivity and selectivity in carbohydrate chemistry. Readers of the sixth edition of Greene’s Protective Groups in Organic Synthesis will also find: Methodology for planning selectivity in organic synthesesDetailed discussion of all major functional groups including ethers, amides, and phenolsA discussion of the impact of protective groups on reactivity in carbohydrates Greene’s Protective Groups in Organic Synthesis is ideal for synthetic organic chemists or medicinal chemists in academia, industry — pharmaceuticals, food, agrochemicals, and biotech — or government agencies.

Although separated from the modern reader by a full century, the First World War continues to generate controversy and interest as the great event upon which modern history pivoted. Not only did the war cull the European peoples of some of their best and brightest, it also led to the destruction of the Austro-Hungarian, German, Ottoman and Russian empires, and paved the way for the Second World War. This thought-provoking book explores ten alternate scenarios in which the course of the war is changed forever. How would the war have changed had the Germans not attacked France but turned their main thrust against Russia; had the Greeks joined the allies at Gallipoli; or had the British severed the communications of the Ottoman Empire at Alexandretta? What if there was a more decisive outcome at Jutland; if the alternative plans for the Battle of the Somme in 1916 had been put into effect; or if the Americans intervened in 1915, rather 1917? Expertly written by leading military historians, this is a compelling and credible look at what might have been.
