Romische Medaillons sind ein Medium der kaiserlichen Selbstdarstellung und damit eine interessante historische Quellengattung der romischen Kaiserzeit. Die 619 hier katalogisierten und besprochenen Medaillons werfen ganz eigene Schlaglichter auf die Herrschaftszeit des Marcus Aurelius. Extrem viele Medaillons nehmen Bezug auf militarische Ereignisse. Zudem zeigt sich, dass in der Regel mehr Medaillons fur die Mitkaiser als fur Marcus Aurelius selbst gepragt wurden. Auch potenzielle Nachfolger wurden fruh mit Medaillons geehrt, und im Namen der Gattinnen der Kaiser entstanden zu deren Lebzeiten weit mehr Medaillons als jemals zuvor. Wahrend anlasslich von Herrschaftsjubilaen keine Medaillons gefertigt wurden, waren Hochzeiten im Kaiserhaus wichtige Ereignisse, in deren Rahmen sehr viele Medaillons verschenkt wurden. Die Bedeutung der Familienmitglieder fur die Stabilitat der Herrschaft und den Fortbestand der Dynastie wird anhand der Medaillons somit besonders deutlich. Auf den 123 Tafeln sind fast alle Medaillons abgebildet. Konkordanzen und Indices ermoglichen zudem eine schnelle Erschliessung.
