Reis ist eine der wichtigsten Kulturpflanzen in der Landwirtschaft weltweit. Indien ist der zweitgr te Reiserzeuger der Welt. Die Produktivit t von Reis in Indien betr gt weniger als 50 % derjenigen von China. Hochlandreis wird auf regengespeisten Feldern angebaut, die nach dem Trocknen vorbereitet und ausges t werden. Die alten Reissorten, die in der Marathwada-Region angebaut wurden, waren hochw chsig und resistent gegen Eisenchlorose, erf llten jedoch nicht die Anforderungen der Verbraucher an lange, schlanke K rner und basmatiartige Kornqualit ten wie Duft, mittlerer Amylosegehalt, Abwesenheit von Wei g rteln und Weichheit beim Kochen. Le riz de plateau est cultiv dans des champs pluviaux qui sont pr par s et ensemenc s lorsqu'ils sont secs. Les anciennes vari t s de riz cultiv es dans la r gion de Marathwada taient hautes et r sistantes la chlorose ferrique, mais en termes de param tres de qualit , elles ne r pondaient pas la demande des consommateurs pour des grains longs et minces et des qualit s de grain de type basmati comme l'odeur, la teneur interm diaire en amylose, l'absence de ceinture blanche et le moelleux la cuisson. Il riso una delle principali colture del mondo agricolo. L'India il secondo produttore mondiale di riso. La produttivit del riso in India inferiore al 50% di quella della Cina. Il riso di montagna coltivato in campi irrigui che vengono preparati e seminati quando sono asciutti. Le vecchie variet di riso coltivate nella regione di Marathwada erano alte e resistenti alla clorosi ferrica, ma in termini di parametri qualitativi non soddisfacevano la domanda dei consumatori di chicchi lunghi e sottili e di qualit del chicco di tipo basmati, come il profumo, il contenuto intermedio di amilosio, l'assenza di fascia bianca e la morbidezza durante la cottura. In questo libro, le variazioni dei tratti fisiologici, delle rese e dei suoi attributi, nonch lo studio della resa in grani e dei parametri morfologici sono trattati utilizzando 12 diversi genotipi di riso.

The. Advanced Research Inst i tute (ARI) on Dynamic Processes in the Chemistry of the Upper OCean had its origins in discussions by the NATO Special Programme Panel on Marine Sciences during 1978 when a wide range of topics for future ARIs was being considered. What was then envisaged was a workshop on chemical aspects of the oceanic mixed layer, at which consider­ ation would be given to the inputs, cycling and removal of material, and the problems involved in the quantitative assessment of fluxes. It was realised that any attempt to model chemical processes would need the active collaboration of workers from other fields, especially physical oceano­ graphers concerned with air-sea interaction and turbulence, and biological oceano~raphers with expertise in primary productivity and the cycling of particulate and dissolved organic material. As plans for the ARI developed further a somewhat different emphasis emerged, focused on the question as to how chemists should set about observing an environment as variable and dynamic as the upper ocean and selecting the appropriate scales for the framework of measurements to study a particular process, especially in the light of current knowledge of physical processes of transport and mixing. It was plain that the capabil­ ity of physical oceanographic methods to resolve differences on small spatial and temporal scales is considerably ahead of the capabilities of biologists and chemists who rely upon discrete sampling and complex lab­ oratory manipulations in order to obtain most of their data.

One of the most important chapters in modern functional analysis is the theory of approximate methods for solution of various mathematical problems. Besides providing considerably simplified approaches to numerical methods, the ideas of functional analysis have also given rise to essentially new computation schemes in problems of linear algebra, differential and integral equations, nonlinear analysis, and so on. The general theory of approximate methods includes many known fundamental results. We refer to the classical work of Kantorovich; the investigations of projection methods by Bogolyubov, Krylov, Keldysh and Petrov, much furthered by Mikhlin and Pol'skii; Tikho­ nov's methods for approximate solution of ill-posed problems; the general theory of difference schemes; and so on. During the past decade, the Voronezh seminar on functional analysis has systematically discussed various questions related to numerical methods; several advanced courses have been held at Voronezh Uni­ versity on the application of functional analysis to numerical mathe­ matics. Some of this research is summarized in the present monograph. The authors' aim has not been to give an exhaustive account, even of the principal known results. The book consists of five chapters.
