Gegen Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts verfasste Jakob ben Reuben in Nordspanien oder Südfrankreich sein Werk Milchamot hash-shem (Kriege Gottes), die erste große antichristliche Streitschrift. Es handelt sich um ein philosophisch-theologisches Werk von hohem Niveau, das selbstbewusst und wehrhaft auf Basis profunder Kenntnis christlicher Positionen – z. B. der Gilbert Crispins (gestorben 1117) – mit rationaler Kritik Dogmen sowie Inhalte des Neuen Testaments (Matthäusevangelium) analysiert. In einem Dialog zwischen dem «Bekenner» und «Leugner der Einheit (Gottes)» werden in 12 Kapiteln 12 christliche Themenkreise mittels Vernunfterkenntnis und Exegese im historischen Kontext sachkundig, mit bisweilen bissigen Bemerkungen behandelt. Den folgenden Jahrhunderten diente dieses Werk in Argumentation, Themenfolge und Anlage als Grundlage und Vorbild für die jüdisch-christliche Auseinandersetzung, jedoch nur selten sein Niveau erreichend.
