Espiritualismo at the U.S.-Mexican Border Region: A Case Study of Possession, Globalization, and the Maintenance of Tradition is a sensitive, empathetic, and beautifully detailed account of the Mexican religious movement Espiritualismo Trinitario Mariano as practiced in the U.S.-Mexican border region, culminating 16 months of fieldwork. This study offers a salient portrait of a changing religion and society in Mexico and is critically relevant to the understanding of religious change in the developing world. Espiritualista symbolism at the U.S.-Mexican border, mainly manifested through spirit possession performances, is an effective system of knowledge and empowerment accessible to individuals from all levels in society. This symbolism reflects an awareness of attempts at discrediting tradition through the imposition of a "rational," modernist hegemonic perspective. According to espiritualistas at the border, the social arrangements engendered by capitalism and the strong presence of Protestantism in the area are the forces that present a direct attack on Mexican tradition. In an uneasy alliance with Catholicism, espiritualismo stands as a bastion of tradition, and at the same time, it establishes a path to modernity. This book is a major contribution to the anthropology of religion, Latin American anthropology, gender studies, medical anthropology, and studies of migration. It is an excellent supplemental reading for undergraduate and graduate courses on the anthropology of religion.

A revision of the popular previous edition published more than a decade earlier, this work examines today's U.S. Latino population—now arguably the most important "minority group" in the country, with numbers well over 50 million strong in an increasingly diverse and integrated America.Latinos are the largest minority in the United States, and as such, Latino Americans have a tremendous influence on the culture, workforce, economy, and politics of this country. This second edition of U.S. Latino Issues provides updated content, stats, and data for each topic, and it frames critical questions and multiple viewpoints on Latinos in the United States that will be useful to student researchers. The responses to the critical questions come from Latino experts and scholars and other well-known subject experts, providing readers with insights from various informed points of view—all in a single volume. The book covers hundreds of topics regarding Latino Americans, such as gender, sexuality, indigenous culture, race and cultural identity, health and wellness, education, and interracial dating and marriage, and it offers in-depth comparisons of the Latino groups and shows how events in their native countries affect them. Readers will have access to concise and up-to-date information on controversial topics such as affirmative action, immigration reform, open borders policy versus border enforcement, changing relations between the United States and Cuba, and Puerto Rico's contested status as a commonwealth versus a state.

This book is not a martial arts manual. It is not about how to became a ninja and is not a 10 days black belt course. Although ninjutsu has been already introduced in the Western world since the 80s, there are still a lot of misconceptions and discussions about it. Many have taken the advantage of the 'shadow' of information to create and claim their styles out of a black costume and some street fighting techniques. Others are still fascinated by the word 'ninja' thinking about magical power and invincibility, while someone else would even think about killers or thieves. If we ask ten people in the street what a ninja is, most likely we will get ten different answers. This book comes after over 20 years of research into martial arts and Asian culture. It offers a unique insight into the classic art of ninjutsu; from the places where it has originated, explained through the words of a mentor and researcher who has dedicated his whole life to it. It includes pictures of places of historical significance and milestones of the evolution of this art. It also includes translated excerpt from the "BanSenShuKai": the ninja secret manual, compiled in the 17th century during the Edo period. It is a journey into the "Intelligence Services" of the feudal Japan discovering the way, the methods and the skills of people who played a great role throughout the history, at the shade of Generals and Warlords. The book is presented to give a better understanding about ninjutsu as an art and as a way of living. It is not addressed to martial artists only but to anyone who would like to find more about the intriguing "Shadow Warriors" from an historical, cultural and practical perspective. From the teachings of great generals, astrologers and priests, ninjutsu has developed a unique way to make full use of the human wisdom and potential that could be of great value even in our modern society.
