Financial Markets, Credit Constraints and Investment in Rural Romania
This study evaluates the performance of financial markets in rural areas of Romania based on the 1998 rural household, rural enterprise, and financial intermediary surveys, along with other official statistical data for 1997. Francisco de Paula Brito is a biography of a merchant, printer, bookseller, and publisher who lived in Rio de Janeiro from his birth in 1809 until his death in 1861. That period was key to the history of Brazil, because it coincided with the relocation of the Portuguese Court from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro (1808); the dawning of Brazilian Independence (1822) and the formation of the nation-state; the development of the press and of Brazilian literature; the expansion and elimination of the trans-Atlantic slave trade; and the growth of Rio de Janeiro’s population and the coffee economy. Nevertheless, although it covers five generations of Paula Brito’s family—men and women who left slavery in the eighteenth century—this book focuses on its protagonist’s activities between the 1830s and 1850s. During that period, Francisco de Paula Brito became one of the central figures in the cultural and political scene in the Imperial capital, particularly through his work as a publisher. Paula Brito’s success was due in part to his ability to forge solid alliances with the Empire’s ruling elite—among them leading politicians responsible for the unification of the vast Brazilian territory and for the maintenance of slavery and the illegal trafficking of Africans. Consequently, through the books and newspapers he published, Francisco de Paula Brito became part of a much larger project.

From one of Guatemala's finest young writers, these twenty-six stories--at once brutal and intensely lyrical--are peopled with sorcerers, ghosts, and assassins.Springing from myth and beliefs indigenous to Central America and North America, where their action occurs, Rey Rosa's tales give the sense of being dreamed. At the same time they can be read as metaphors for the terror and oppression of years of warfare.Rodrigo Rey Rosa has based many of his writings and stories on legends and myths that are indigenous to Latin American as well as North Africa. A number of Rey Rosa's works have been translated into English, including; The Path Doubles Back (by Paul Bowles), Dust on her Tongue, "The Pelcari Project", The Beggar's Knife, The African Shore, and Severina. Along with his longer writings, he has also written a number of short stories that have been printed in college-level text books, such as "Worlds of Fiction, Second Edition" by Roberta Rubenstein and Charles R. Larson. A few of these short stories include The Proof, and The Good Cripple. Many of Rey Rosa's works have been translated into seven languages. In the early 1980s, Rey Rosa went to Morocco and became a literary protege of American expatriate writer Paul Bowles, who later translated several of Rey Rosa's works into English. When Bowles died in 1999, Rey Rosa became an executor of his literary estate.

Set in Guatemala, these spare and beautiful tales are linked by themes of magic, violence, and the fragility of existence. Paul Bowle's translation perfectly captures Rey Rosa's stories of the haunted lives of ordinary people in present-day Central America. "A genuinely surprising and original set of stories...a sense of violent unease shading into terror drifts up from every line...his writing has a sharp, almost sadistic edge." --The Times Literary Supplement "Compelling in the extreme...these twelve tales (that) boast of hidden dangers and lurking terrors, are written in a deceptively undramatic style, with masterful restraint. Stories that continue to disturb and delight long after they are laid to rest." --Blitz Twelve tales--many evoking the uncanny, most with surprise endings--explore how people seek to gain power from others. . . . Rey Rosa writes about danger and precarious stability in an effective, straightforward style." --Kirkus Reviews Rodrigo Rey Rosa (born November 4, 1958) is a Guatemalan writer. He has based many of his writings and stories on legends and myths that are indigenous to Latin American as well as North Africa. Visually astonishing, and insightful, Chronicles of Entanglement, debuts Rodrigo de Toledo's unique blend of illustrated fiction, graphic novel, and artist book. He takes us into the landscapes of a poetic and graphic mythology, through intricate illustrations of a whimsical imaginary world. Immersing into magical realism, the book reveals the wandering of a seeker's soul, and a dramatic rendezvous between artist and muse. An intimate tale of search for beauty and identity in a foreign land, portrayed with open, deep, and colorful tones.Strained in a reality that flows like a film in front of his eyes, a man struggles between childhood memories, a rich fantasy world, and what he thinks are short extra-sensorial spiritual perceptions. The eyes constantly flooded by images that leak from his active mind, distractions that superimpose his life's reality. An entirely dysfunctional object, a complex kinetic contraption with a will of its own, that for many years demanded complete dedication from him, now disregards his existence. Accidently, he stumbles on a gateway to a colorful and disturbing universe, the direct access to the unconscious realm, where he interacts with shifting panoramas of the soul. Puzzled by such a life changing vision, he is determined to discover if he has been plagued by yet a larger curse or blessed by the long-waited path to sanity.About the Author Rodrigo de Toledo is an award winning Brazilian-American cross-media visual artist, an author and univerisity professor, and a pioneer in the digital arts. His whimsical imaginary world has been published, and exhibited around the globe since 1990, in museums, galleries and festivals, on animated, interactive and printed media. His work has been reviewed in media venues such as PBS, Forbes Magazine, How Magazine, Canal+ France, Globo TV Brasil, TV Educativa Brasil, Jornal do Brasil, Leonardo Journal, and NASA online. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, lives in the USA, and teaches animation, fictional world design, and graphic design. See his website for more of his work: neurondiva.com
Poverty Shaping Politics

Poverty Shaping Politics

Rodrigo Zarazaga

Cambridge University Press
2025
sidottu
Drawing on substantial original interviews and fieldwork data from Argentina's marginalized urban areas, Poverty Shaping Politics reveals how the spatial segregation of slums and vulnerable neighborhoods compels the poor to seek out local political brokers to access resources, while politicians depend on these brokers to navigate poor areas and garner political support. Rodrigo Zarazaga uniquely demonstrates that the establishment of broker networks is driven more by the conditions of segregated poverty and vulnerability than by the inherent capabilities of 'machine-like' parties. Using the case of Cambiemos challenging Peronism in poor districts, Zarazaga provides the first account of a party building broker networks to contest a dominant machine party. While existing literature suggests that sustained economic development can weaken machine parties, this book shows that entrenched and widespread poverty can also threaten their hegemony.
